Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo run a continuous FFmpeg YouTube stream with Docker, keep FFmpeg in the foreground as the container’s main process, loop a local media file in real time, and give Docker a restart policy such as unless-stopped. This can recover from some FFmpeg or container exits; it cannot prevent interruptions caused by a host outage, bad source file, network failure, invalid stream key, or YouTube ingest problem.
What you need before starting
- An always-on machine or hosted runtime with Docker Engine, enough capacity for your chosen encode, and measured upload bandwidth with headroom.
- A known-good video file in a directory on the host. The example below uses
/srv/youtube-media/loop.mp4. - A YouTube stream’s ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- An FFmpeg image or custom image that includes the required FFmpeg build and H.264 encoder.
For input media, a read-only bind mount keeps the file on the host and makes it available inside the container without copying it into the image. Docker volumes also persist outside a container’s writable layer, but a bind mount is often simpler for a fixed host directory.
Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the current ingest server URL and stream key shown there. Use the protocol and URL format YouTube provides; do not assume that an old URL or an example from elsewhere is current.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not commit it to a public repository or expose it in a public command transcript. If it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder configuration.
YouTube’s live-stream settings explain stream URLs, keys, permissions, and key reset: Manage live stream settings.
Choose compatible FFmpeg output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the feed in transit to Google’s servers. The right bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s current table rather than treating one value as universal.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
As one specific reference point, YouTube Help’s English encoder-settings table, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of stable streaming. Measure actual upstream capacity and leave practical headroom for other traffic and variation.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames is two seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the source and the viewing quality you want. Higher settings require more encode capacity and bandwidth.
- Codec and audio: Ensure your FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder, and use a supported audio codec if the source has audio.
Check YouTube Help’s current table for its full codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame-rate recommendations: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test the FFmpeg command outside Docker
First confirm that the source plays and that your installed FFmpeg has the requested encoder. The following is an illustrative command for a 30 fps H.264/AAC stream, not a universal or tested preset. Replace the ingest URL and key with protected values from your stream configuration.

Confirm that the output URL uses the ingest protocol and format shown in Live Control Room. Avoid placing a real key in a shared shell history. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun FFmpeg as the container’s main process
Build or obtain an image that contains FFmpeg and launches the command above, or an equivalent script that ends with exec ffmpeg .... Keeping FFmpeg in the foreground lets Docker observe its exit status. A detached shell or a script that leaves FFmpeg in the background can prevent the expected restart behavior.
One representative launch shape is:
docker run -d --name youtube-ffmpeg
--restart unless-stopped
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/youtube-media,dst=/media,readonly
--env-file /etc/youtube-stream/stream.env
your-ffmpeg-image:tag
The image and entrypoint must be configured to run the FFmpeg command; this launch shape does not define an image build or the contents of the environment file. Restrict access to /etc/youtube-stream/stream.env and keep it out of source control. Environment variables are not a complete secret boundary: privileged host administrators may be able to inspect them. Use an appropriate protected secret mechanism for your environment and limit who can administer the host.

Choose a restart policy deliberately
Docker documents unless-stopped as restarting a container after it exits and after daemon restarts, except when an operator has deliberately stopped it. The always policy differs in how it behaves after a manual stop and daemon restart. Docker recommends restart policies for ordinary container restart behavior rather than a separate host process manager. The policy only takes effect after the container has been up successfully for at least 10 seconds.
Docker’s restart policy handles container lifecycle events; it does not make the whole broadcast highly available. A dead host, unavailable network, invalid key, missing or corrupt input, failing FFmpeg command, or rejected YouTube connection still needs diagnosis or a separate recovery plan. Docker’s official explanation is in Start containers automatically; daemon availability and live restore limitations are covered in Live restore.
Check status, logs, and recovery
Use Docker’s basic inspection commands to see whether the container is running, follow FFmpeg output, and check whether restarts have occurred:

docker ps
docker logs -f youtube-ffmpeg
docker inspect -f '{{.RestartCount}}' youtube-ffmpeg
Before making the stream public, test the complete source-to-viewer path. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use audio and movement similar to the real broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. Verify that the stream arrives, picture and audio stay in sync, bitrate fits measured upload capacity, and restart behavior matches what you expect. Also test what happens when the source ends, the network drops, and the container is manually stopped. Do not assume an untested setup is reliable.
Plan for long broadcasts and archives
YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need an archive, plan within that stated duration; do not rely on automatic archiving for a broadcast that exceeds it. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
- The container exits immediately: Check
docker logs youtube-ffmpegfor a missing file, unsupported encoder, malformed URL, or FFmpeg option error. Confirm the image contains the expected FFmpeg build and that its entrypoint runs FFmpeg in the foreground. - FFmpeg cannot find the input: Confirm the host directory exists and the file is readable, then verify the read-only mount maps it to
/mediaand the filename matches the command. - YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the current ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, along with the protocol and URL format. If the key may have leaked, reset it and update the protected configuration.
- The picture buffers or stream health degrades: Check actual outbound capacity and competing traffic. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate as appropriate, and compare the new settings with YouTube’s current guidance. Do not assume the example’s 4.5 Mbps target is suitable for every source or connection.
- The stream stops after an FFmpeg or network error: Check logs and restart count. Docker can restart FFmpeg when the process exits, but it cannot repair a broken source or guarantee that YouTube will accept a reconnect. Retry wrappers need sensible delays and monitoring to avoid a rapid restart loop.
- A daemon restart interrupts streaming: A container restart policy can start the container again, but it cannot keep FFmpeg running while the host or Docker daemon is unavailable. Docker’s live-restore feature has specific limits and is not end-to-end stream failover.
- HTTP reconnect flags seem ineffective: FFmpeg’s
reconnect_at_eofandreconnect_streamedoptions describe HTTP input behavior, not a universal recovery switch for RTMP output to YouTube. Check the installed FFmpeg protocol documentation for the protocol and direction you are actually using.
Choose a host and encoding approach
A local machine, VPS, or dedicated host can work if it supports Docker and sustains the chosen encode and outbound stream. Compare candidates on Docker support, sustained CPU or GPU capacity, outbound bandwidth and transfer policy, recovery controls, network path to YouTube ingest, and total cost. Measure the actual encode and connection rather than assuming a particular processor, GPU, or bandwidth tier is enough. Software encoding is straightforward when the host has capacity; hardware acceleration may reduce CPU load but depends on the device, driver, and FFmpeg build. Lower resolution or bitrate can ease those demands at the cost of visual detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Docker restart FFmpeg if it crashes?
Yes. A Docker restart policy can restart a container after its main process exits, subject to the policy’s behavior and activation conditions. It cannot guarantee a successful reconnect to YouTube.
Does the example command work with any FFmpeg image?
No. The image must include FFmpeg and the H.264 encoder used in the example, and its entrypoint must execute the command with the input mount and protected stream credentials configured.
