You can send a video file to YouTube Live from Ubuntu 24.04 with FFmpeg, but keeping a stream running around the clock also means managing the encoder process, the host, and the network. First enable live streaming on an eligible YouTube channel, then use the event’s ingest details in FFmpeg, match the encoding settings to the source, and monitor the result. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; its guidance does not establish that one event can run indefinitely without intervention.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s eligibility guidance was current when accessed on October 3, 2026. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- Ubuntu 24.04 with an FFmpeg build that includes the encoder and protocol you intend to use. The Ubuntu repository build and its features can vary; check the installed build rather than assuming a particular encoder is available.
- A source file, enough CPU or available encoding hardware for your selected settings, and reliable outbound internet with spare upload capacity.
This guide covers a local video file sent to YouTube using RTMP/RTMPS. A camera, capture device, or network input needs its own FFmpeg input syntax and has different failure modes.
Enable YouTube Live and get the event credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown for that event.
- Treat the stream key like a password. It authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not paste a real key into a command that may remain in shell history or be visible in process listings. If a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update your encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled event, use the Live Control Room controls to go live when the preview is ready and the event setup calls for it.
YouTube’s setup guide notes that starting the encoder creates the watch page. Its exact behavior and controls can depend on whether the stream is scheduled. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Check the Ubuntu FFmpeg build
Do not assume that every Ubuntu 24.04 FFmpeg package has identical codec or protocol support. Check the installed version and inspect its available protocols and encoders before building an unattended workflow:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -protocols
ffmpeg -encoders
Confirm that the chosen video encoder is listed and that the build supports the protocol and endpoint you plan to use. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated for its newest revision and advises users of older builds to consult documentation for their installed version. If a required encoder or secure protocol is missing, use a suitable build or another available encoder; verify package-specific instructions separately before changing the system.
Send a video file to YouTube with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents this basic real-time file-to-RTMP pattern: ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. For a file encoded to H.264 and AAC, the following is an illustrative command, not a universal YouTube preset or a configuration tested on every Ubuntu 24.04 build:

- Replace
input.mp4with the actual path to your file. - Replace the sample destination with the exact ingest URL and stream path from Live Control Room. The displayed placeholder is not a real YouTube endpoint.
- Use a key-handling approach that does not expose the real key in shell history or process listings. Protect any file or environment-based secret you use with appropriate permissions.
- Verify that
libx264and the selected output protocol are available in your installed build before relying on the command.
The example uses -re to read the file at its native rate, -f flv for the documented RTMP output shape, and encoding flags that must be adapted to the source and YouTube’s current settings. At 30 fps, -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. Set the GOP to match other frame rates.
The example command does not loop a finite file forever. This guide does not provide an unverified loop command: check the exact looping syntax in the installed version’s ffmpeg -h full output or versioned manual before deploying it. Test how the input behaves at its end and how YouTube handles a reconnect before treating it as an always-on setup.

Choose settings for the source and YouTube
For typical SDR streaming, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular local FFmpeg build supports every listed option. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full resolution- and codec-specific table.
| Setting | Guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 are listed for typical SDR streaming. | Use a codec supported by your installed FFmpeg build and the current YouTube table. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. | Match the source and set the keyframe interval in seconds, not as a fixed frame count for every frame rate. |
| Bitrate mode | YouTube lists CBR. | Use the recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not reuse an H.264 value for a different codec. |
| Keyframes | Two seconds recommended; interval should not exceed four seconds. | For 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds. Recalculate for the actual frame rate. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 are listed. | Check that audio is present and levels are suitable in the Live Control Room preview. |
| H.264 at 1080p30 | YouTube’s recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps. | This figure is YouTube’s published recommendation accessed October 3, 2026; consult the current table for other combinations. |
YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to its servers. Confirm that your FFmpeg build and the endpoint shown in Live Control Room support the secure protocol before choosing a URL scheme. The settings above describe typical SDR, not an HDR workflow; YouTube has separate HDR and HLS requirements, so do not apply this example unchanged to those streams.

Test the stream and keep watch on it
- Before relying on the setup, run a representative test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream. YouTube recommends testing under those conditions.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and check stream health and audio/video quality before going live and during the event.
- Run an upload speed test and compare available outbound capacity with the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% extra upload capacity beyond the total outgoing bitrate. That headroom is an operational recommendation, not a guarantee against congestion or outages.
- For an unattended host, decide how someone will notice a failure: retain FFmpeg logs, check any supervisor’s status, and periodically verify the actual YouTube watch page. These are operational practices, not a tested monitoring configuration.
- If you plan a backup encoder, test the failover path in advance. A second encoder can add equipment redundancy, but simultaneous output adds another bitrate load and failover must be configured and tested.
YouTube cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A wired Ethernet connection can remove some local Wi-Fi variability, but it does not increase the capacity or reliability of your internet service. YouTube also recommends testing encoder failover for events. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.
What “always-on” means in practice
FFmpeg sending a file is only one part of a continuous stream. The Ubuntu host must remain powered and connected, the input must continue producing media, and the encoder process must stay healthy. A process supervisor can restart a failed process, but it cannot guarantee that the YouTube event remains live, that a reconnect preserves the same watch page, or that the stream will run without operator attention. This guide does not supply a tested systemd service definition; deploying one responsibly requires a defined restart policy, logging, secure secret handling, and a way to detect repeated failures.

YouTube’s current guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a single event or session can run forever. Plan for event duration, interruptions, and operator checks rather than treating an unattended FFmpeg process as a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 availability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an Ubuntu computer or home connection to remain on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
