How to Stream a YouTube Gaming VOD Playlist from OBS on Windows

To stream prerecorded gaming VODs in sequence from OBS on a Windows PC, add the locally saved videos to a media-playback or playlist-capable source in your OBS setup, connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its server URL and stream key, test the complete scene, then start the encoder and release the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube creates and manages the live event; OBS supplies the video and audio.

Before you start

  • Have the gaming VOD files available on the Windows PC that will run OBS, and decide what viewers should see and hear between videos and at the end.
  • Be signed in to YouTube Studio and able to create a live stream.
  • Use OBS scenes and sources to assemble the output. OBS describes scenes as arrangements of sources, which can include media. See the OBS Studio Quickstart.

The available official documentation does not establish a current, exact click-by-click workflow for creating a multi-file local playlist source in every OBS installation. Use the media playback source or playlist-capable source available in your installed setup, and verify its playback and end-of-file behavior before going live. A YouTube-hosted playlist URL is not a substitute for adding your local VOD files as OBS media sources.

Choose an immediate or scheduled YouTube stream

Start now

In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then use the Stream tab for an immediate broadcast. This suits a stream you intend to start without promoting a future event.

Schedule it for later

In YouTube Studio, open the Manage tab and choose Schedule stream. Scheduling can give viewers an event page and reminders. It also gives you a preview stage before you release the stream to the audience. YouTube documents both paths in its encoder setup instructions.

Set up OBS and assemble the playlist output

  1. Prepare the scene. In OBS, arrange the sources that should appear in the broadcast. Add the VOD playback using the media-playback or playlist-capable source provided by your installed OBS setup. The exact controls can vary by source and version; follow that source’s displayed options rather than assuming a particular dialog or playlist format.
  2. Decide how transitions and gaps should look. If viewers should see an intro, intermission screen, or end card, include it in the scene layout and test when it appears. Check what your chosen source does when a file ends, and whether it advances to the next file as intended.
  3. Check audio. Play the material in OBS and confirm the game audio and any other intended audio are reaching the stream mix at usable levels. Watch and listen to a test recording or private preview if you need to catch routing, silence, or abrupt transitions.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. Select YouTube as the streaming service in OBS if that option is available. If you connect manually, copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder settings. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or the broadcast.
  5. Test the whole sequence before the public stream. Confirm that the first VOD starts, subsequent files play in the intended order, overlays and transitions behave as expected, and audio remains present. OBS strongly recommends testing before a first live stream: “It’s strongly recommended that you test everything as best as you can before starting your first live stream.” See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Start the stream and release it to viewers

  1. Start streaming from OBS so it sends the composed feed to YouTube.
  2. For a scheduled event, wait for Live Control Room to receive the encoder feed and display its preview. When the preview is ready and you intend to publish, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the feed; for a scheduled event, the YouTube control-room action is the release step.
  3. For an immediate event, follow the current prompts shown in YouTube Studio. Check the event controls rather than assuming that OBS starting the feed has also published it.

A community OBS forum guide, originally published in 2015, notes that scheduled broadcasts may involve separate Live Control Room start and stop actions unless automatic start and stop are enabled. Because those controls and integrations can change, treat this as a setting to check, not a universal rule; follow the current controls displayed for your event. See the OBS community guide to streaming to YouTube Live.

End the broadcast and handle the replay

When the playlist is finished, stop sending the feed from OBS and end the broadcast in Live Control Room when the event controls call for it. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in YouTube Studio’s Live tab. Do not rely on that statement as an archive guarantee for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer; check the resulting stream in Studio.

Copyright and reused-content checks for gaming VODs

Having a VOD file does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast every part of it. Before streaming, check rights for the gameplay recording and any included music, overlays, or other material. A game publisher’s or music rightsholder’s rules may affect whether you can stream or monetize the content. The sources for this workflow do not establish permissions for any particular game, recording, or soundtrack, so check the applicable rights and YouTube’s current policies for your material. Repeating prerecorded footage also does not guarantee eligibility for monetization; avoid presenting a replay as a fresh live gameplay session.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Verify that OBS is connected to the correct event and that the server URL and stream key match the values currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
  • The scheduled event has a preview but is not public: A scheduled event’s preview is not the same as releasing it. When ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
  • The next VOD does not start: Check the behavior and file list in the media or playlist-capable source you selected. Test the transition and end-of-file behavior in OBS before the broadcast; exact multi-file setup controls are not established across all current installations.
  • Viewers cannot hear the game: Check that the source’s audio reaches the OBS mix and that the intended audio is audible in a test playback. Also check for unintended muted or duplicated sources.
  • The stream stops when the playlist ends: Review the source’s end behavior and decide whether the scene should show an intermission or end screen, or whether the event should finish. Do not assume a playlist repeats unless your source is configured and tested to do so.
  • The broadcast does not end when OBS stops: Check the event controls in Live Control Room. Scheduled start and stop behavior can depend on event or integration settings.
