Each has different controls, so there is no single confirmed cause for every setup. For VLC Video, check the playlist and whether a scene transition hides the source; for YouTube playback, check Autoplay on the device actually controlling the player. Then compare OBS’s local preview with the live output to see whether playback stopped locally or only appears to fail for viewers.
Identify which playback path you are using
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist of media files. A YouTube VOD playing in a browser or YouTube player is controlled by that player’s settings instead. Other OBS media sources may not have the VLC playlist controls described below.

If the VODs are in an OBS VLC Video playlist
Check the playlist and its order
- In OBS, select the VLC Video source and open its properties.
- Confirm that every intended clip is present and listed in the intended order. A missing or incorrectly ordered item can look like a failure to advance.
- Check Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents it as off by default; turn it off if the clips must play in a set sequence.
- Choose whether Loop Playlist should be enabled. OBS documents it as on by default. Looping repeats the list; it does not add a missing next clip.
These settings are documented on OBS’s Media Sources page, dated 2022-01-11; interface details may differ in newer versions.
Check what happens when a scene changes
OBS documents the default VLC Video visibility behavior as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If the source is hidden during a scene transition, playback can stop while it is hidden and restart when it becomes visible. In the source’s properties, inspect Visibility Behaviour and choose the behavior that matches your setup: stop/restart, pause/resume, or always play while invisible. The right choice depends on whether the VOD should continue through scenes where the source is hidden.

Check the VLC dependency only if the source is unavailable
OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This is relevant if the source is missing or unavailable; it does not establish that installing VLC fixes a playlist source that already appears but fails to advance.
If playback is through YouTube’s player
Check the player’s Autoplay switch on the same device where the VOD is being played. YouTube warns that autoplay settings can differ between devices, so an enabled setting on a phone does not establish that it is enabled on the computer or browser used for the stream. Use YouTube’s Autoplay videos help page for the player control and device details.

Use OBS preview to separate playback from delivery
- Watch OBS’s local preview when the current VOD ends. Note whether the next clip appears, whether the image goes black or freezes, and whether audio continues.
- Compare that moment with the outgoing YouTube stream. If the preview also fails to advance, focus first on the source, playlist, player setting, or scene visibility. If preview advances but viewers do not see the next item, investigate the outgoing stream and connection separately.
- Check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator during the failure. OBS explains that an increasing dropped-frames counter with a yellow or red connection square indicates an unstable connection to the streaming service or one that cannot keep up with the set bitrate. That points to stream delivery, not by itself to a playlist transition. See the OBS Project Help Portal.
The preview comparison is a troubleshooting distinction, not a guaranteed diagnosis: note exactly where the symptom occurs before changing settings.
Capture enough detail to investigate an unresolved failure
If the problem continues, record the OBS version, operating system, exact source type, playlist item types, visibility changes around the transition, and whether the failure appears in preview or only in the live output. Include whether the current item finishes, whether the next item is absent or black/frozen, and whether audio continues. OBS directs users needing help to its support resources at the Help Portal.

A narrow historical report should not be mistaken for a current general diagnosis: OBS Studio issue #3410, opened September 4, 2020, described a mixed audio/video VLC playlist problem on Windows 10 with OBS 25.0.8 and 26.0.0-rc1. The reporter described a retained video frame while the next audio item played. That report concerns old versions and a different case; it does not show that current OBS has the same fault or that gaming VOD playlists generally fail this way.
