Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For the best chance of a no-gap loop, edit your gaming highlights into one continuous video file, check its ending-to-beginning transition, and play it through an encoder connected to YouTube Live. A single file avoids handoffs between separate clips, but it cannot prevent internet or platform interruptions. YouTube does not promise that playlists of separate media files will transition without gaps, so test the exact playback setup you plan to use.
What “no-gap” can—and cannot—mean
You can engineer continuity in the highlight file and reduce avoidable interruptions in your playback and encoder setup. You cannot guarantee uninterrupted delivery across a public internet connection or YouTube. Keep those two goals separate: a clean file loop addresses transitions between highlights; a stable encoder path and connection address delivery.
For strict continuity at clip boundaries, assemble the selected highlights into one rendered program file. A playlist of separate clips may be easier to update, but its transitions depend on the playback software and configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not certify gapless playlist transitions.
Choose the playback and ingest setup
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One pre-rendered continuous highlight file | Strict source continuity and a simpler playback path | You must prepare the reel and check its loop point; it does not prevent network or platform interruptions. |
| Separate files in a playlist | Swapping or updating clips | Transition behavior depends on the playback system. Test the exact setup; gaplessness is not established by YouTube’s guidance. |
| RTMP/RTMPS ingest | Typical encoder streams | Use settings suited to your encoder and upload connection. |
| HLS ingest | Workflows that need supported HDR or codecs | Requires specific segment and playlist behavior and has higher latency than RTMP. |
| Local software encoder | Playing files or gameplay from a computer | Depends on the computer, playback pipeline, encoder configuration, and connection. |
| Professional hardware encoder | Higher-production-value production | Adds equipment and setup; it is not shown to be necessary for a prerecorded highlights loop. |
A capture card is only relevant if you are routing live console gameplay into a computer encoder. It is not needed just to play existing highlight files.

Prepare and check the highlights reel
- Choose and edit the clips. Put them in the intended order and remove dead air or unwanted transitions. Normalize audio so one clip does not become unexpectedly louder or quieter than the next.
- Render one continuous file. Use the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream, and ensure the export completes before the broadcast. A single file reduces the number of clip handoffs the playback system must handle.
- Inspect the loop point. Check the final video frames and audio against the opening. If the end and beginning do not join cleanly, adjust the edit or accept a deliberate transition rather than assuming the player will hide the discontinuity.
- Test the full playback path. Play the file in the exact software and configuration you will use for the stream. Confirm it reaches the end and returns to the beginning as intended. If you choose a playlist instead, test transitions between representative clips in that same configuration.
- Keep a local copy. Retain the rendered file and, where practical, a local recording of the stream as separate backups.
Create the YouTube Live stream and connect the encoder
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Confirm you can access live streaming before scheduling the broadcast.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, choose the Gaming stream type, and set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube describes it as both the stream’s password and address. Do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot.
- Set the source and loop behavior. Add the continuous highlight file to the encoder’s playback source and configure that source to repeat. The encoder must keep sending video and audio after the file reaches its end.
- Use RTMP/RTMPS unless your workflow calls for HLS. RTMP/RTMPS is the usual encoder ingest choice. HLS is a separate option with specific requirements: 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments; choose it when a needed codec or HDR workflow calls for it.
Set the encoder for a stable stream
Choose an output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder recommendations include CBR, H.264/H.265/AV1 in its stated workflows, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate table provides examples by resolution and frame rate; use the row that matches your target rather than treating one bitrate as universal. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the highlight file where practical, while staying within what the encoder and connection can sustain. YouTube’s guidance allows up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate: Pick the applicable YouTube table recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then verify the upload connection can sustain it with headroom.
- Codec: Use a codec supported by your selected ingest workflow. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 in its stated encoder workflows; support is not a reason to choose a setting your encoder or ingest path cannot use.
Run an upload speed test and leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s apparent maximum. Test with representative fast motion and audio: static menus do not reveal the same problems as action-heavy gameplay.

Preflight the stream and monitor it live
- Start early. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it begins.
- Preview before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, and the expected source loop. Read stream-health messages rather than relying only on what the encoder reports.
- Check the watch page. Confirm the stream is accessible with the intended visibility and that playback works on desktop and mobile.
- Verify the local backup. If you are recording locally, confirm the recording is being written and has audio. Keep enough local storage available for the planned session.
- Monitor during the broadcast. Watch audio, video, and stream health. YouTube advises continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality.
- Test any backup encoder. If your production uses one, stop the primary encoder during a rehearsal and verify that the player rolls over as expected. A backup that has not been tested is not a reliable failover plan.
Choose latency and plan for long sessions
Lower latency can make viewer playback more vulnerable to buffering because it leaves less read-ahead buffer. For a prerecorded highlights loop with no live conversation, normal or higher latency can be a reasonable stability choice when immediate viewer interaction is not important. Congestion can still delay a stream even when average bandwidth looks adequate; choose the setting that fits the experience you need, not just the shortest delay.
YouTube may automatically archive streams under 12 hours; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local archive rather than relying on YouTube as the only copy. DVR lets viewers pause and resume, but rewind on long streams can be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Disabling DVR prevents seeking back during the live stream, though a recording may be available after it ends. You can also create highlight clips while a stream is live.

Copyright, gameplay rights, and channel rules
Before broadcasting a highlights reel, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every included element—not only the gameplay footage, but also music, voice chat, overlays, and third-party clips. A game’s publisher policy does not necessarily grant rights to music or other material embedded in a recording. Review YouTube’s applicable rules and the rights-holder terms for the content you use; a live encoder setup does not make otherwise unauthorized content permissible.
Do not assume that a long loop or repeated footage will qualify for monetization simply because it is live. YouTube’s monetization and reused-content assessments are separate from stream continuity. Make the reel meaningfully your own through original gameplay, editing, commentary or other creative contribution where appropriate, and check current YouTube policies before relying on monetization.

Troubleshoot gaps, buffering, and missing archives
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| A pause or black frame between highlights | Playback handoff between separate files, or a discontinuity in the rendered loop | Use one continuous file for strict source continuity; inspect its loop point and test the full playback path. |
| Playback stalls or stream health degrades | Upload instability, insufficient headroom, or encoder overload | Lower the bitrate or output load to a sustainable level, check encoder and Live Control Room health, and retest with fast-motion footage. |
| The loop stops at the end of the file | The playback source is not set to repeat, or the player does not resume correctly | Check the source’s repeat behavior in the exact encoder configuration and rehearse a complete end-to-start cycle. |
| YouTube does not accept the encoder feed | Incorrect stream URL or key, or channel not eligible for live streaming | Copy the current ingest details from the Live Control Room, keep the key private, and confirm channel verification and live-stream eligibility. |
| Viewers report buffering despite a healthy-looking speed test | Upload congestion or too little read-ahead buffer for the selected latency | Leave more upload headroom, consider normal or higher latency, and review stream-health messages. |
| No YouTube archive appears after a very long broadcast | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold | Check the local recording. For future long programming, plan session boundaries and do not rely on an archive for a stream over 12 hours. |
