Check the encoder preview and YouTube’s incoming preview before you go live. The exact controls for selecting a file or looping it depend on the encoder you use.
Before you start
Your YouTube channel must be verified, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube recommends testing with a private or unlisted stream before the public event. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- A Windows 11 computer with the prerecorded video file available locally.
- Encoder software that can play a local media file and send its output to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS among its compatible encoder options, but no single app is required.
- A stable upload connection that can sustain your chosen output settings.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not technical requirements. Leave time to test the file, audio, and incoming preview.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- For a new stream, use the Stream tab; to schedule an event, use Manage and create a scheduled stream.
- Set the event’s title, description, audience, and privacy. Check privacy rather than assuming its default: YouTube says users aged 13–17 default to private, while users 18 and older default to public, and the setting can be changed.
- For a scheduled event, use its watch page to share the event and let viewers set reminders.

Connect your Windows encoder to YouTube
- In Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key.
- In your encoder, choose its YouTube destination preset if available. Otherwise, paste the stream URL into the server or URL field and the key into the stream-key field.
- Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not reveal it in a screenshot or share it. If you think it has been exposed, the channel owner or manager can reset it in the stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
YouTube supports different ingest protocols and encoder options. For a typical prerecorded-file stream, use the encoder’s YouTube-compatible RTMPS connection if it offers one; the next section covers when another protocol may matter.
Add and check the prerecorded video
- In the encoder, add the local video file as a media or video source. The precise menu name and file-selection steps vary by application.
- Make sure the file’s audio is routed to the encoder’s stream audio as well as its picture. Play a section and check that both are present in the encoder preview.
- If you need the video to repeat, configure the encoder’s own file-loop or playlist behavior and test it. Looping controls are app-specific; do not assume a file will restart automatically.
- Confirm that the file’s aspect ratio, resolution, frame rate, and audio match what you intend viewers to receive.
The encoder sends its resulting program—not simply the file itself—to YouTube through the URL and key. Test the whole path before the event so you can catch silent audio, a black picture, or a file that stops at the end.

Choose output settings and protocol
Set resolution and frame rate to suit the source video and the upload connection. YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate in its encoder settings and bitrate guide. Use the figures for your chosen output mode, and choose a setting the available upload connection can sustain reliably; there is no single bitrate that fits every file and connection.
- Prefer RTMPS for a standard workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Choose the compatible YouTube/RTMPS option in your encoder when available.
- Use HLS only when your requirements call for it. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes cases such as HDR or codecs outside RTMP support. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream and has higher latency, so it is not the default choice for an ordinary prerecorded-file stream.
- Keep advanced HDR settings separate from a basic SDR setup. YouTube documents a particular OBS RTMP HDR workflow requiring OBS 30.1 or later and specified HDR sources and encoding settings. Those specialized requirements do not apply to a standard SDR stream; consult YouTube’s HDR instructions if you specifically plan to stream HDR.
For the first test, use a section with both audio and motion similar to the actual program. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality.

Start, monitor, and end the stream
- Start the encoder’s output. For a scheduled event, wait for the incoming video preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and confirm the audio and picture are correct. When ready, click Go live in Live Control Room.
- While the event runs, monitor YouTube’s stream health and the audio and video. If the connection or output becomes unstable, lower the encoder’s output settings to a level the upload connection can sustain.
- When finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop sending output from the encoder.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in YouTube Studio’s Live tab. Do not assume that rule covers streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
Copyright and reused-content checks
Streaming a file does not exempt it from YouTube’s rules. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for every part of the video, including music, gameplay footage, and other people’s clips. A private test is useful for checking the technical setup, but it does not grant rights to use material in a public stream. Consider whether a repeated or minimally changed program adds sufficient original value for your channel’s monetization goals; technical success alone does not establish monetization eligibility.
