You can use an Unraid server to run a software encoder that repeatedly sends a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live event. The basic setup is to mount the video and persistent configuration into a Docker container, configure the encoder to loop the file, and connect it to YouTube with the event’s stream URL and key. Unraid hosts the encoder; YouTube still receives a live encoder feed. This is different from uploading a normal video or scheduling a Premiere.
Before you start
Make sure your YouTube channel can go live before configuring Unraid. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. First-time live-streaming enablement can take time, so check access in advance. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- An Unraid server with Docker enabled and enough capacity to read the media continuously.
- A prerecorded video stored in an Unraid user share.
- A maintained encoder container whose current documentation explains its media path, persistent configuration path, and loop controls.
- A YouTube Live event and its stream URL and key.
- Reliable upstream bandwidth with room above the encoder’s selected bitrate.
Choose the event’s title, description, privacy, and schedule in YouTube Studio. Use an encoder-based event; the goal is to send the file through the encoder, not to upload it as a regular video.
Set up the encoder container in Unraid
1. Confirm Docker and locate the video
In Unraid, confirm Docker is enabled and place the video in a user share. Unraid’s shares documentation explains how shares organize files across storage. Keep the source file in place while the stream is running.

2. Add a maintained encoder using its template
Use the container’s documented Unraid template or installation instructions. Map the host folder containing your media to a path inside the container, and map a host appdata folder to the container’s documented configuration path. If the encoder only reads the video, make the media mapping read-only where the template supports it.
Unraid distinguishes the host path from the container path. The encoder must be pointed at the container-side path, not the host path. Storing variable settings outside the Docker image is also what allows them to persist when the image is recreated. Follow the current Unraid container configuration guidance and the chosen encoder’s documentation for exact paths and template fields.

3. Keep networking private and simple
Leave the template’s recommended network mode in place unless the encoder documentation requires something else. Unraid documents bridge mode as a common default; it exposes only ports explicitly mapped in the template. A software encoder sending a feed outbound to YouTube generally does not need an inbound port forwarded from the internet. Do not expose the Unraid management interface or an unnecessary encoder web interface publicly.
4. Configure the file and loop behavior
In the encoder’s documented interface or configuration, select the video at its container-side path and enable repeat or loop playback if you want it to run continuously. The exact control name, supported formats, and command syntax depend on the encoder image; consult its current project documentation rather than assuming a setting from a different container will work. A looping file does not itself guarantee an uninterrupted network feed.

Connect Unraid to a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into the matching fields in the encoder. YouTube describes the key as functioning like the stream’s password and address; keep it private. See YouTube stream settings.
- Choose the event privacy and schedule, and verify its title and description before going live.
- Start the encoder in Unraid. Wait for the video and audio preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and stream health, then start the scheduled event in YouTube Studio when ready.
If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the YouTube-side workflow.
Choose stream settings and bandwidth
Use RTMPS if the selected encoder supports it. YouTube Help says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Bitrate: Select a bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Do not copy a number from a different resolution, frame rate, or encoding setup.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- Upload headroom: YouTube recommends available upload capacity above the total outgoing stream bitrate and suggests 20% headroom. Its streaming tips also recommend a reliable network, testing, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio and video quality.
These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that an Unraid host, home connection, encoder, or YouTube will remain uninterrupted. Test the complete route before relying on it unattended.

A server can remain powered on while its encoder stops, its network connection drops, its storage fills, or YouTube interrupts the event. Decide how you will notice and respond to those failures; merely enabling a file loop is not monitoring or automatic recovery.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a complete YouTube archive for a 24/7 or longer event. Keep the original video, and if a full-length capture matters, configure a separate local recording workflow and monitor free storage.
Troubleshooting common setup problems

Unraid software encoder or dedicated hardware?
A software encoder in Docker or a VM is the direct fit if you want to use an existing Unraid server and are comfortable managing its container, paths, settings, and monitoring. Dedicated hardware is an alternative if you want an encoder appliance independent of that server. YouTube names the AJA HELO Plus and describes its PlayToStream prerecorded-media feature in its encoder setup guidance. The available information does not establish a controlled cost, reliability, or performance comparison, so hardware is an option rather than a requirement.
