How to Add Closed Captions to Prerecorded Videos in a 24/7 Kids’ YouTube Stream

Caption each source video in YouTube Studio, but verify live caption delivery separately: an uploaded subtitle track may not pass through your 24/7 encoder.

Add captions to each prerecorded video in YouTube Studio before adding it to a 24/7 stream. You can upload a timed SRT or SBV file, sync a transcript automatically, or enter captions manually. But a caption track on an uploaded video is not guaranteed to appear as closed captions in the live stream: the encoder or cloud playout service must deliver captions to YouTube as part of the live feed. Test the actual live player before relying on captions for your audience.

How to caption each prerecorded video

Prepare captions for each source video, then add and check the subtitle track in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s caption instructions describe three ways to create the track: upload a timed file, auto-sync transcript text, or type captions manually.

  1. Prepare and review the words. Use the language spoken in the video. Include meaningful non-speech sounds where they help convey what is happening, and check names and child-directed vocabulary. Automatic speech recognition can mishear accents, dialects, mispronunciations, overlapping speakers, background noise, silence, or unsupported languages.
  2. Choose a caption method. For a repeatable library workflow, prepare a timed SRT or SBV file. If you have an accurate transcript without timestamps, try Auto-sync. For a short video or a small number of edits, type captions in Studio.
  3. Open the video’s subtitle settings. In YouTube Studio, go to Subtitles, select the video, choose Add language, then choose Add under Subtitles.
  4. Add the track. Choose Upload file for a timed caption file, Auto-sync for transcript text, or Type manually to enter captions in the editor. Follow the prompts, then save or publish the track. You can also add captions during upload.
  5. Review the finished track. Check that text matches the speech, appears at the right time, and is assigned to the right language. Correct recognition errors rather than assuming an automatic track is accurate.

For detailed file-format instructions, see YouTube’s caption file guidance. YouTube recommends SRT or SBV as practical beginner formats. SRT should be plain UTF-8; basic SRT and SBV do not support styling markup. A timed file includes both text and timestamps, so validate the timing and encoding as well as the wording.

Which caption method should you use?

Method Best fit Important limitation
Upload timed SRT or SBV A caption library prepared in an editor or a repeatable process across many videos. Check language, text, timestamps, and file encoding before publishing.
Auto-sync transcript You have a transcript but no timestamps. The transcript language must match the video’s speech and be supported. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos over an hour or with poor audio quality.
Type manually Short videos or focused corrections. Entering and reviewing captions takes time, especially across a large catalog.
Automatic captions A starting point when you do not have a prepared caption file. Availability, timing, and accuracy vary. Check and correct the track; it may be delayed or unavailable for some audio or language conditions.

YouTube explains the limits of automatic captions and recommends reviewing them. Do not treat an automatically generated track as a guaranteed, finished transcript.

Will captions on uploaded videos appear in the 24/7 live stream?

Not necessarily. A subtitle track attached to a video in Studio belongs to that uploaded video. A continuous live stream is a separate feed sent by an encoder or playout system. YouTube’s live caption guidance describes live captions delivered as embedded CEA 608/708 data or through supported caption software that sends captions to YouTube over HTTP. It does not establish that every live playout tool reads each video’s Studio subtitle track and passes it through as synchronized live captions.

  1. Check the current documentation for the encoder or cloud playout service you plan to use. Look specifically for support for per-video subtitle tracks and delivery of live captions to YouTube.
  2. Run a private or unlisted test stream with a video that has a published caption track.
  3. Open the live stream in YouTube’s player and check whether captions can be enabled and whether they stay synchronized when playback continues or moves to the next video.
  4. If captions do not arrive, ask the provider whether the system supports live caption input or embedded 608/708 captions. Do not assume that uploading SRT files to YouTube alone solves live caption delivery.

YouTube’s encoder overview describes software and standalone hardware encoders and lists cloud options for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. That overview does not compare providers’ caption pass-through behavior. Choose a playout method only after confirming how it handles captions; test the complete path rather than relying on the source video’s subtitle page.

Set the audience correctly for kids’ content

In YouTube Studio, identify whether each video is made for kids. YouTube requires creators to set the audience accurately, including when content is aimed at children; its made-for-kids guidance explains the setting and feature restrictions. Made-for-kids settings restrict features including live chat, so do not build a caption workflow or viewer support plan that depends on chat being available.

YouTube’s upload guidance also includes original video language and caption certification fields. Caption certification concerns certain content shown on U.S. television; it is not the same as adding a subtitle track. See YouTube’s upload instructions and do not use certification as a substitute for captions.

Common caption problems and fixes

  • The uploaded caption file is rejected or displays incorrectly: confirm that the file is in a supported format, that an SRT is plain UTF-8, and that its timestamps and text are valid. Remove unsupported styling markup from basic SRT or SBV.
  • Auto-sync is unavailable or performs poorly: confirm the transcript matches the video’s spoken language. For videos over an hour or with poor audio quality, use a timed file or another method instead.
  • Automatic captions contain errors or are missing: review the track and correct it in Studio. Check for noisy audio, overlapping speech, silence, accents, dialects, or language support issues; availability can vary.
  • Captions appear on the uploaded video but not on the live stream: verify the live output separately. The encoder may not pass the source video’s subtitle track through. Check the provider’s documentation and test its live-caption workflow.
  • A planned viewer interaction does not work on a made-for-kids stream: check YouTube’s audience-related feature restrictions and avoid relying on live chat.
