How to Process User-Generated Videos with AWS Lambda and FFmpeg

Lambda can process bounded FFmpeg jobs for user-generated video, but its time, memory, and storage limits make realistic upper-bound testing essential. See how to choose between Lambda, EFS, and a MediaConvert workflow.

AWS Lambda can run FFmpeg for short, bounded video-processing jobs, but it is not a universal transcoding engine. It is a reasonable fit when each upload can be processed within Lambda’s time, memory, and storage limits and you have validated that against realistic large inputs. For longer or multi-output video workflows, consider EFS for custom FFmpeg jobs or a managed pipeline built around AWS Elemental MediaConvert. The right choice depends on your media, outputs, and operating requirements—not on an assumption that Lambda is always cheaper.

When Lambda and FFmpeg are a good fit

For a gaming site or other service accepting user-generated content (UGC), treat Lambda as a worker for a defined preprocessing task, not as a promise that any uploaded video can be transcoded within a serverless function. AWS’s article on processing UGC with Lambda and FFmpeg, published December 18, 2020, describes a memory-based pattern and demonstrates converting variable-frame-rate audio to constant-frame-rate audio. It also lists possible uses such as rewrapping media into a different container or format, clipping a segment, and adding a slate, black frames, or a waveform video stream to audio-only media. These are examples to evaluate, not guarantees for every file, codec, filter, or FFmpeg build.

  • Consider Lambda for finite jobs with known input and output bounds, a processing step that finishes well within the invocation limit, and a workflow you can test at its upper limits.
  • Consider EFS with Lambda when you need custom FFmpeg processing but the working files do not fit comfortably in memory or configured /tmp. EFS adds a shared filesystem and networking and storage-management considerations.
  • Consider MediaConvert for managed file-based transcoding, especially when you need multiple outputs or broader video-on-demand (VOD) capabilities. Lambda can still orchestrate or pre-process jobs in that design.

Do not decide on cost from the service names alone. Compare actual AWS charges for your workload, required outputs, data movement, and the engineering and operations work each approach entails.

Know Lambda’s current limits before designing around files

For ordinary Lambda functions, AWS’s current quotas documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, gives a configurable timeout from 1 to 900 seconds, memory from 128 MB to 10,240 MB, and a maximum timeout of 15 minutes. The default timeout is 3 seconds. AWS also says CPU allocation increases with configured memory; 1,769 MB corresponds to the equivalent of one vCPU. That figure does not predict FFmpeg throughput: codecs, filters, input characteristics, and the FFmpeg binary all affect runtime.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Lambda’s ephemeral storage documentation, also accessed October 3, 2026, gives /tmp a default size of 512 MB, configurable in 1 MB increments up to 10,240 MB. It is unique to an execution environment, temporary, and encrypted at rest with an AWS-managed key. AWS’s 2020 FFmpeg article discusses a then-current 512 MB temporary-storage limit; do not carry that old limit forward as if it were the current maximum.

Budget storage for every file you stage: inputs, outputs, and any intermediate files. The configured ceiling is not a reason to assume a job will fit: determine the peak working-space requirement for your actual processing path. Alternatively, a memory-based design can avoid staging the full media file in /tmp, but it must fit its memory and transfer needs. If using that approach, test it with the real input and output sizes rather than assuming a whole-file in-memory workflow will suit every upload.

Choose the processing architecture

Decision point Lambda with FFmpeg MediaConvert-oriented workflow
Work shape Bounded, short processing or preprocessing step; AWS’s example focuses on UGC. Managed, scalable file-based transcoding and broader VOD workflows.
Processing control You package and operate FFmpeg and its dependencies, and choose the commands and filters. Submit jobs using service settings, templates, and queues.
Runtime boundary Ordinary invocations are limited to 900 seconds; memory and /tmp are configurable but bounded. AWS positions MediaConvert for media libraries of any size and documents advanced broadcast, audio, captions, DRM, and adaptive-bitrate (ABR) capabilities.
Workflow Can be a focused function working with S3 input and output objects. Can integrate S3, Step Functions, Lambda callbacks, CloudWatch or EventBridge, and CloudFront.
Cost Not established as cheaper by the available AWS guidance; measure your workload and operating needs. Not established as cheaper by the available AWS guidance; compare the same workload and operational requirements.

AWS’s VOD guidance describes a wider architecture in which S3 holds source and output files, Step Functions orchestrates work, Lambda handles workflow steps and error handling, MediaConvert transcodes, DynamoDB stores metadata, CloudWatch provides logs and event rules, SNS sends notifications, and CloudFront delivers content. The guidance also mentions optional MediaPackage and an SQS queue for outputs. You do not need every component for every application; use only the pieces justified by your workflow.

Build a bounded S3-to-Lambda processing flow

  1. Define the job before writing the function. Specify accepted source formats, the exact transformation, expected output format, maximum input size and quantity per job, and the largest intermediate and output sizes. Reject or route unsupported uploads instead of letting them fail partway through FFmpeg.
  2. Keep the source and result in storage. Store uploaded originals and completed outputs as S3 objects, and pass the function the object identity and job metadata it needs. Avoid treating the Lambda execution environment as durable storage.
  3. Choose how media data moves. For a memory-based approach like the one in AWS’s 2020 article, account for the memory required by the media workflow and test realistic upper-bound files. If staging is intentional, size /tmp for peak inputs, outputs, and intermediates. If those working files do not fit, assess EFS and its networking and storage workflow rather than silently relying on an undersized temporary directory.
  4. Package and validate FFmpeg. A Lambda container image offers control over build and runtime dependencies; AWS supports container images up to 10 GB uncompressed. OS-only and alternative base images need a Lambda runtime interface client. ZIP packages are also supported subject to Lambda’s package-size limits. Validate the binary’s architecture, runtime compatibility, linked libraries, and required codecs and filters. Do not assume an arbitrary FFmpeg build will work in Lambda.
  5. Run the transformation and verify its result. Use a controlled FFmpeg operation for the task you have defined. Check the process exit status and verify that the output exists and meets the required media properties before marking the job complete. Record enough job context to diagnose failures without putting sensitive user content into logs.
  6. Persist status and handle failure deliberately. Keep job state and object locations in durable storage appropriate to the application. Make retries safe: a repeated invocation should not create inconsistent results or accidentally treat a partial output as complete. For queue-triggered jobs, AWS advises that expected invocation time should not exceed the queue visibility timeout, or duplicate invocations can occur.
  7. Set IAM permissions narrowly. Give the function only the access required for its input and output objects and supporting workflow. Separate permissions for unrelated buckets, prefixes, or services rather than granting broad access for convenience.

Size timeout, memory, and storage with measurements

Timeout

Do not set a timeout close to an average run time and assume that is safe. Include upload or download time, processing time, dependent-service latency, and realistic variation. Test the largest supported input and the heaviest supported transformation. AWS’s timeout guidance says: “When testing your application, ensure that your tests accurately reflect the size and quantity of data and realistic parameter values.” Choose the timeout from those results, within the ordinary-function maximum of 900 seconds.

Memory and CPU

Measure with the exact codecs, filters, FFmpeg build, and media characteristics you intend to support. Raising memory also raises CPU allocation, but the 1,769 MB-to-one-vCPU relationship is not an FFmpeg speed guarantee. Record peak memory and elapsed time for representative and upper-bound jobs before setting production values.

/tmp and EFS

If your implementation writes working files locally, confirm that peak concurrent file usage fits the configured ephemeral storage—not merely that the source alone fits. If it does not, either change the data-movement design, increase configured /tmp within the documented limit, or evaluate EFS. EFS can accommodate larger custom-processing workflows, but it introduces shared-storage and network configuration that a local temporary directory does not.

Concurrency and queues

Load-test the expected arrival pattern as well as individual jobs. Runtime variation affects how many jobs remain in flight and can change timeout and concurrency behavior. For queue-driven work, set visibility timeout in relation to expected processing duration so that a message is not made available for another invocation while the first is still expected to run.

AWS’s Lambda best-practices documentation warns: “To avoid potential data leaks across invocations, don’t use the execution environment to store user data, events, or other information with security implications.” A reused environment is not a safe place to retain one user’s content for another invocation. Keep durable state in the storage and metadata services designed for that purpose, and ensure temporary copies are handled intentionally.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Function times out Input size, transfer time, filter complexity, or service latency exceeds the configured time budget. Measure each stage on the largest supported inputs; revise the timeout within the 900-second ceiling, simplify or split work where appropriate, or move the job to a more suitable architecture.
Process runs out of memory The chosen data-movement or FFmpeg operation needs more memory than configured. Measure peak memory using the production build and real media. Revisit the memory-based design, increase configured memory within Lambda’s limit, or stage through storage/EFS if appropriate.
No space left during processing Peak working files exceed the configured /tmp capacity. Account for inputs, outputs, and intermediates together. Increase ephemeral storage within its limit, reduce local staging, or assess EFS.
FFmpeg cannot start or lacks a codec/filter Packaged binary, architecture, linked library, runtime, or build configuration does not match the function environment. Validate the exact artifact in the target Lambda runtime and confirm that every required dependency and codec/filter is present. Rebuild for the intended architecture and runtime.
Some uploads fail while others succeed Input characteristics differ, or the failing files exceed tested bounds or use unsupported media features. Capture safe diagnostic metadata, reproduce with representative failing files, and enforce clear upload limits or route exceptional cases to a different path.
A queued job is processed more than once The message may become visible again before processing finishes, or the workflow is retried after partial completion. Align queue visibility timeout with expected invocation duration and make job completion and output-writing behavior safe to repeat.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is not to transform uploads but to keep a finished recording or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, that is a separate job from FFmpeg preprocessing. StreamNeo does not transcode UGC or go live from a camera; it keeps uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream. The setup is:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
