First identify what actually failed: OBS may have lost its connection, OBS or the computer may have stopped, the story source may have started playback from the beginning, or YouTube may have ended the live event. These are separate problems. OBS’s Loop setting repeats media after it finishes; it does not document saving and restoring the playlist item and timestamp when OBS crashes. Fix the failed layer, then test whether your story resumes where you expect.
Identify what restarted
Before changing settings, check OBS, the story source, and YouTube Studio. Note which story was playing and roughly where it was when the failure occurred.

Fix an OBS connection interruption
If OBS is still running and only its output connection failed, configure automatic reconnect in OBS’s stream output settings. This feature addresses a dropped output connection; it does not relaunch OBS after a crash.
If disconnections or dropped frames recur, check whether your available upload capacity can sustain the stream bitrate and inspect the network path. OBS also identifies VPN or security software, network hardware, and connection stability as possible causes. Recover after OBS crashes or the computer reboots
Automatic reconnect cannot help if OBS is no longer running. A separate process supervisor or operating-system task can relaunch OBS. OBS launch parameters include --startstreaming and options for choosing a scene collection, profile, and scene. Those options can automate startup, but they do not guarantee that YouTube keeps the same event live or that the story returns to its former position. See the OBS launch parameters guide.
- Set up relaunch outside OBS. Use a process supervisor or operating-system startup task configured for your machine. For automated or scheduled Windows launches, follow OBS’s guidance about the working directory.
- Select the intended setup deliberately. If using OBS launch parameters, specify the profile, scene collection, and scene you want rather than relying on whichever was last active.
- Decide separately whether to auto-start streaming. The
--startstreamingoption can initiate output, but verify how it behaves with your YouTube event before relying on it. - Check the event in YouTube Studio after relaunch. Confirm whether the intended event is still receiving data or has ended, and follow the action its current state requires.
- Test a controlled restart. Record whether OBS relaunches, output reconnects, the same event remains live, and playback resumes at the expected story and time.
OBS’s documentation describes automatic reconnect as an output setting, while its overview and launch-parameter guides describe launching the application. Neither relaunching OBS nor starting output proves that YouTube will continue a particular event. YouTube’s broadcast API documentation covers event state and automatic start/stop, but does not describe restoring an OBS or VLC playback cursor: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Check the story source and playback position
OBS’s Media Source documentation describes Loop as replaying a file after playback completes. It describes Restart playback when source becomes active as starting the file when the source becomes current and visible. OBS’s VLC Video source has a Loop Playlist control. These settings control playback and repetition; the documentation does not promise crash-time saving and restoration of a playlist cursor or timestamp. See OBS Media Sources.
- Confirm that the story files and playlist paths are still available after a restart.
- Check that the intended media source is in the active scene and that its loop, visibility, and restart behavior match your goal.
- If you need the exact story item and timestamp preserved, choose a player or workflow that explicitly persists that state, and verify it with a controlled crash-and-restart test on your installed versions.
A loop can make a story play again from its beginning after it reaches the end. That is different from recovering its previous position after a crash. YouTube DVR is also not a broadcaster-side checkpoint: it lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume within its limits, but it does not restore the local OBS media cursor. YouTube notes that very long streams have rewind limits and viewers cannot seek to a time before the stream began: YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

Test the failure modes separately
OBS recommends testing stream settings before relying on them. Avoid treating one successful reconnect as proof that every crash scenario is covered.
- Briefly interrupt the network while leaving OBS open. Check whether output reconnects and whether the same YouTube event remains live.
- Close or restart the OBS process in a controlled test. Check whether your external relaunch method works, what happens to the YouTube event, and where story playback resumes.
- If relevant, test a host reboot. Confirm that the task starts the intended OBS profile and scene and that the result matches your expectations.
- For every test, note whether OBS returns, output resumes, YouTube’s event is still live, and the story returns to the expected item and timestamp.
Menu labels and behavior can vary with OBS and VLC versions and YouTube event configuration. The OBS media-source page is dated 2022-01-11; the connection troubleshooting page is dated 2024-09-30, and the cited OBS overview and launch-parameter guides are dated 2021. YouTube Help and API pages do not display publication dates in the cited material.
