Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test a simple 720p30 stream using a stable bitrate your internet connection can sustain. If the PC struggles, try 480p30, simplify scenes, and compare the hardware encoder available on your PC with x264. No preset guarantees 24/7 uptime: the result depends on your computer, upload connection, power, and the stream itself.
Build a low-load OBS starting profile
1. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
- Open OBS and choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Apply its suggested settings as a starting point, not a guarantee. OBS says performance varies with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; basic system requirements alone do not establish that a PC can stream reliably. Validate with your actual scene and content. OBS system requirements
2. Prefer a working hardware encoder, then test it
Go to Settings → Output → Streaming and choose a supported hardware encoder if your system offers one. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox; hardware encoding uses a specialized GPU component and can leave more CPU capacity for the game and OBS. Older encoder generations may produce lower image quality, so compare the available option with x264 using the same scene and settings rather than assuming one is best. OBS hardware encoding
3. Reduce frame rate, resolution, and scene work
In Settings → Video, begin at 30 FPS and set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 (720p). If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, reduce resolution to 854×480 (480p), keep 30 FPS, and retest. Lower output resolution and FPS can reduce GPU and encoder load. Set YouTube-compatible encoder values
Under Settings → Output → Streaming, use H.264, CBR (constant bitrate), and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. The following are YouTube’s H.264 bitrate figures in its current guidance accessed in 2026; they are platform recommendations, not guarantees about your connection or picture quality. Choose bitrate only after measuring sustained upload at the actual streaming location and time. OBS’s 2024 connection troubleshooting guidance suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point; YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Treat these as planning guidance, not a substitute for a real stream test. If upload speed varies, lower bitrate and/or resolution until the stream remains stable. OBS connection troubleshooting
Connect OBS to your YouTube channel safely
- In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and create or select a live stream. Copy its stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start the stream from OBS, then check YouTube’s live control room for stream health and incoming audio/video before relying on the broadcast.
Exact YouTube Studio labels can change. Follow the live control room prompts for your account and verify the selected stream is the one whose key you entered. Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using the same scene, media, audio, encoder, resolution, FPS, and schedule you plan to use.
- Watch the YouTube stream from another device. Confirm picture, sound, and stream health rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
- Monitor OBS for dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding overload. Verify the stream reconnects as expected if you test an interruption safely.
- Check that a local recording file is growing if you need a backup archive, and confirm you have enough storage for the planned duration.
OBS has an automatic reconnect setting under Settings → Advanced, but reconnect cannot fix a PC losing power or an unavailable internet connection. YouTube also recommends verifying that a local archive file is growing. YouTube streaming tips
Choose a connection that stays stable
Use wired Ethernet if you can connect the PC and router by cable. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming; Ethernet is not a cure for ISP congestion or interruptions elsewhere on the route. Compare stability at the intended location and streaming hours, not just a speed-test peak. If your PC and router have Ethernet ports and a practical cable route, a Cat 6 cable is one possible connection; it is not an OBS requirement. OBS stream connection troubleshooting

For viewers in India, test the specific ISP connection and local power conditions where the PC will run, preferably during the intended schedule. The available guidance does not establish a nationwide upload-speed or outage figure, nor does it determine the right backup-power capacity for an individual setup.
Plan for YouTube’s long-stream archive limits
A 24/7 live broadcast does not guarantee a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. If a saved recording matters, use a local recording backup and test both storage capacity and the extra encoding load; alternatively, consider shorter sessions if you need YouTube to create an archive.
