You can broadcast a prerecorded church service from a Windows laptop by playing the local video in OBS Studio, sending OBS’s encoder feed to YouTube Live Control Room, checking the preview, then starting the event. First confirm the channel is eligible and clear the recording’s music and other third-party content for the intended use. Rehearse the complete path before service day: OBS and YouTube support the necessary components, but that does not guarantee a particular laptop or internet connection will work reliably.
1. Check channel eligibility and content rights
Confirm live streaming is available
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Its stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. Complete any channel setup before the service date, rather than discovering a restriction during setup. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Clear the recording before you broadcast
Review the entire service for music, video clips, photographs, and other material owned by someone else. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream; if the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end it. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Do not assume that credit, a purchase receipt, or general permission to use a song at an in-person service covers a YouTube livestream. Ask the relevant rights owner whether the church’s permission covers this recording, this platform, and the intended audience. YouTube also says licensed third-party content may still interrupt a stream unless the owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Restricting the broadcast to territories where the channel has rights does not remove that allowlist requirement. These platform rules do not establish which Indian licence applies to a particular church or repertoire; check the actual permissions and seek qualified advice if needed.

2. Prepare the prerecorded service in OBS
Add the service file as a Media Source
- Install and open OBS Studio on the Windows laptop, then create a scene for the service.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Give it a clear name, such as “Service video.”
- In the Media Source properties, select the local recording file. OBS documents common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, and others; its listed audio formats include MP3, AAC, Ogg, and WAV. Consult the OBS Media Sources documentation if the file does not load.
- Check the preview for the expected picture, aspect ratio, and audio. Confirm that the source is audible in OBS’s audio mixer and that no unintended desktop or microphone audio is being sent.
- Set playback behavior deliberately. Media Source can loop a file and can restart playback when the source becomes active. Enable those options only if they match the event plan; do not assume playback will restart or end in the way you expect.
Choose encoder settings from YouTube’s current guidance
In OBS, open Settings → Output and Settings → Video to review the encoder, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate available on this laptop. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the exact combination you choose rather than applying a guessed India-specific bitrate.
Keep the combined audio-and-video bitrate below the upload capacity available to the laptop. YouTube recommends 20% headroom, so a connection should have more sustained upload capacity than the stream’s combined bitrate. Actual reliability depends on the location, service plan, local network, and other usage; no single speed is established for every Indian household. See YouTube’s connection and stream tips.

3. Create the YouTube event and connect OBS
Schedule or create the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live.
- Create an immediate stream or schedule one under Manage. Scheduling gives you an event page you can share in advance; an immediate stream suits an ad hoc broadcast.
- In Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy the displayed stream URL and stream key. Use the URL shown there rather than guessing a server address. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it; the default URL may be ordinary RTMP. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and RTMPS guidance.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube or the applicable custom service option, and enter the copied server URL and stream key. Apply the settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed.
4. Rehearse the full stream path
Before the service, test the same video file, scene, encoder settings, network, and YouTube event workflow you intend to use. An unlisted test event can help check the watch page without promoting it publicly.
- Start OBS output ahead of the planned broadcast and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Inspect the YouTube preview for picture, framing, and sound. Check that the watch page is accessible as intended and that audio is clear there, not only in OBS.
- Play the recording through its full duration, or otherwise test its beginning, transitions, audio changes, and ending. Confirm what happens when playback finishes and whether any loop or restart setting is appropriate.
- Check sustained upload performance while the stream is running. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom above the combined stream bitrate and avoid competing uploads or downloads during the event where possible.
- Monitor stream health, sound, and picture throughout the rehearsal. A successful preview is useful, but it cannot guarantee that a longer event or a changing connection will remain stable.
A wired Ethernet connection is optional, not a YouTube requirement. If considering one, confirm the laptop and router have compatible ports; an adapter may be needed. Reliable Wi-Fi can also work, so test the actual connection before buying hardware.

5. Start and end the broadcast cleanly
- For a scheduled event, start the OBS encoder feed early enough to let Live Control Room receive it and show a preview.
- After checking the preview, select Go live in Live Control Room to start the scheduled event. Follow the Live Control Room workflow in YouTube’s streaming instructions.
- During the service, watch OBS and Live Control Room for loss of picture, audio problems, or stream-health alerts.
- At the end, end the event in YouTube, then stop sending encoder content from OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Common problems and what to check
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is streaming, the copied server URL and stream key match the correct event, and the key was entered without an extra character. Check that the feed is going to the URL displayed by Live Control Room.
- Video plays but there is no sound: Check the Media Source audio and OBS mixer meters, then verify audio is reaching the encoder and YouTube preview. Make sure the selected file has an audio track.
- Stuttering, dropped frames, or unstable picture: Compare the combined stream bitrate with sustained upload capacity, restore the recommended headroom, and check for other network traffic. Re-test using the same resolution and frame rate.
- The recording stops or repeats unexpectedly: Review Media Source loop and restart behavior. Test the complete file, especially its ending, instead of relying on assumptions about source playback.
- The broadcast is interrupted after a rights match: Stop or replace the disputed material and resolve permissions with the rights owner. For licensed third-party content, ask whether the channel can be added to the owner’s Content ID allowlist.
- The event will not go live: Recheck channel verification and live-stream eligibility, then confirm that the correct scheduled event is open and receiving the OBS feed before selecting Go live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live around the clock from prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera. StreamNeo streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India. Check the recording’s rights before broadcasting with any method.
