Can a Podcast YouTube Livestream Run From Google Drive Audio Files?

Google Drive stores the podcast audio; OBS or another encoder plays it and sends the live feed to YouTube. Here’s how to set it up and what to check.

Yes—but Google Drive stores the audio; it does not send it to YouTube Live by itself. Make the file available to a computer, play it in streaming software such as OBS Studio, and send that software’s output to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. A Drive sharing link is not documented as a direct YouTube Live audio input.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains channel readiness.
  • A podcast audio file you own or have permission to broadcast.
  • A computer that can access and play the file, streaming software such as OBS Studio, and a reliable internet connection for the live feed.
  • A visual scene for the outgoing stream. The official encoder guidance describes a video feed; it does not define a special audio-only YouTube Live mode. Choose an intentional visual, such as a title card or other suitable video content, in your encoder.

Make the Google Drive file available to your computer

You can use Google Drive for desktop to stream files from a virtual drive or mirror them to a local folder. With streaming, the file remains cloud-first, so playback depends on Drive access and a reliable internet connection. Mirroring keeps a local copy available offline but uses local disk space. See Google Drive for desktop’s file-streaming and mirroring information.

For an important broadcast, make the audio available offline or use a local copy where possible. That reduces the chance that an interruption in Drive access will interrupt playback. Do not assume that pasting a Drive sharing URL into YouTube or OBS will work as the audio input: the documented workflow is to make the file accessible on the computer and have the encoder play it.

Set up the podcast stream in OBS and YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream and locate the server URL and stream key for the encoder connection. YouTube describes the key as the credential that identifies where the feed is coming from; keep it private. The YouTube encoder setup guide covers connecting an encoder.
  2. Create an OBS scene and add a visual. Use a suitable video source or title card so the outgoing live feed has a visual component as well as the podcast audio.
  3. Add the audio file. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the audio file accessible on your computer, and enable Loop if you want it to start again when it ends. OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio file types. Refer to the OBS Media Sources guide for the source controls.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s stream settings, enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Do not share or publish the key; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  5. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the preview shows the intended visual and that the audio is audible before you make the stream public or share it with viewers. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion and lists AAC and MP3 among the supported audio codec options for RTMP/RTMPS. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  6. Monitor the live feed. Listen for clean audio and check stream health while it is running. A successful preview is useful, but it does not remove the need to monitor the actual broadcast.

Choose the right playback method for the show

Need Practical choice Trade-off
One episode or a short broadcast Play the accessible file in OBS and start the encoder when you are ready. You need to start the computer and software and monitor the stream.
Repeat one episode Enable Loop on the OBS Media Source. The episode repeats; looping does not create a new episode or schedule the next one.
Reduce reliance on Drive during playback Mirror the file or otherwise keep a local copy available offline. Local storage is required.
Keep a stream running continuously Plan for unattended playback and recovery, or use a cloud service designed to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream live. A computer-based setup depends on that computer, its internet connection, and the encoder continuing to run.

YouTube’s encoder help lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 pre-recorded video streams, but that listing does not establish that it supports audio files stored in Google Drive. Check any service’s support for your exact file and workflow before relying on it.

Copyright and channel considerations

Only broadcast podcast audio and visuals you own or are licensed to use. Having a file in Drive does not grant broadcast rights. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifically tells creators to ensure they have rights to the audio and video they stream. Review YouTube’s encoder guidance and the relevant rights for every element in your program.

Also check channel readiness before scheduling the event: verification, recent live-streaming restriction history, and first-time activation timing can affect whether you can go live when planned.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The Drive file does not appear in OBS: Make sure it is accessible to the computer through Drive for desktop or a local copy, then select that file as the Media Source. A sharing link alone is not the documented local-media workflow.
  • Playback stalls or stops: If the file is being streamed from Drive, check the computer’s internet connection and Drive access. For greater independence from cloud file access during playback, mirror the file or use an offline local copy.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the encoder is running and that you copied the current server URL and stream key into its stream settings. Keep the key private.
  • The preview has no sound: Confirm the correct file is selected in the Media Source, start playback, and check OBS audio levels and the YouTube preview before going live.
  • The episode stops at the end: Enable Loop in the Media Source if you want that episode to repeat. For a sequence of episodes, prepare a playlist workflow rather than expecting a single file to advance automatically.
  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and live-streaming restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
