The VPS is a workable setup, not an uptime guarantee: you must verify the current plan’s outbound-transfer allowance, test the full workload, and monitor the stream. Before going live, confirm channel eligibility, configure YouTube-compatible output, set the audience accurately, and secure worldwide rights to every animation and audio track.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. A channel must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of your launch date. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- A DigitalOcean Droplet in a region available to you. DigitalOcean lists Bangalore among its regions, but check the account’s region and plan selector for current availability. Droplets are Linux virtual machines. DigitalOcean’s regional availability page lists regions.
- A playlist feed and software that can either encode it into a live stream or relay an already encoded feed. These approaches have different CPU requirements.
- The YouTube event’s stream URL and private stream key. Create the event in YouTube Live Control Room and do not share the key.
- Permission to stream every video and audio track in every territory where the stream may be available.
Choose whether the VPS encodes or relays the playlist
Encode on the Droplet
An encoder on the VPS reads the playlist and produces a YouTube-compatible stream. This gives you control over output settings, but encoding consumes CPU and memory. The official DigitalOcean material does not specify a minimum Droplet size for this workload, and YouTube does not certify a particular Droplet configuration. Choose a plan only after testing the intended playlist, resolution, frame rate, audio, and runtime on that plan.
Relay an already encoded feed
A relay forwards a pre-encoded stream to YouTube instead of performing the full encode on the VPS. It may reduce encoding load, but still needs enough network capacity and a reliable input feed. Confirm that your software is relaying rather than re-encoding, and test the exact pipeline; do not assume a given Droplet can sustain it based on the plan name alone.
During a representative test, observe CPU, memory, outbound transfer, dropped frames, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A configuration that starts successfully is not proof that it will stay healthy unattended for a full day.

Enable YouTube Live and create the event
- Confirm eligibility and activation. Verify the channel and ensure it has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature early; activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s getting-started guidance.
- Create the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create the event and configure its title, visibility, schedule, and audience setting. Select the option indicating that the content is made for kids when that is accurate.
- Copy the connection details. Use the stream URL and stream key provided for the event in your encoder or relay. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start with a test. Send a representative feed, then verify that YouTube receives it and reports healthy video and audio before relying on the event.
Set encoder output for YouTube
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and Google. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for ordinary SDR. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance when configuring your software.
Bitrate and resolution
For 720p at 30 frames per second, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for H.264 video. That figure is the video bitrate alone: add the audio bitrate and allow for transport overhead when estimating the feed’s total network use. Higher resolution, frame rate, or codec choices can change the required bitrate; select the setting that matches the source and your tested capacity rather than treating 6 Mbps as a universal target. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers.

Keyframes and connection
- Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
- Set CBR rather than a variable bitrate mode.
- Set keyframes every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Check that the outgoing resolution and frame rate match the playlist and chosen bitrate.
- Use the event’s stream URL and key, and confirm the encoder is connected to the intended event.
Estimate outbound transfer before choosing a Droplet
DigitalOcean counts outbound traffic toward a Droplet’s monthly transfer allowance. A 24/7 stream sends continuously, so calculate transfer using the total audio-plus-video bitrate, not video bitrate alone. Include protocol overhead, retries, operational traffic, and any parallel failover feed, then leave headroom.
For a rough estimate, convert the total Mbps to a monthly data estimate for continuous operation and compare it with the included transfer shown for the exact plan and Bangalore region in your account. The precise Droplet SKU, regional inventory, transfer allowance, and price can change; confirm them in DigitalOcean before purchase rather than assuming a plan will cover a continuous stream. Set the kids’ audience setting and protect your rights
Audience features and monetization
Set the audience accurately; do not mark content otherwise to retain interaction features. On a Made for Kids live stream, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. These limitations mean you should not build an engagement or revenue plan around those unavailable features. Rights for animation and music
Before broadcasting, secure the rights needed to stream the animation, soundtrack, and any other material in all territories where viewers may access the stream. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility for worldwide rights on the content provider, including applicable music licensing. Owning a copy of a cartoon or finding it online does not by itself grant streaming rights. DigitalOcean’s Acceptable Use Policy also prohibits infringement of third-party intellectual property. Plan how to preserve a replay
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours, but that is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single 24-hour session is not a dependable way to create a complete replay. If preserving the programming matters, split it into shorter live events and/or use a separate recording workflow with enough storage. Test that workflow before relying on it.
DigitalOcean makes the customer responsible for preserving and backing up service content. Check its Terms of Service Agreement and plan storage and backups independently of YouTube’s archive.

Test and monitor the stream
- Run a representative trial. Use the actual animation playlist, audio, resolution, frame rate, encoder or relay, and target Droplet.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Confirm the event is receiving a stable signal and inspect any warnings before public launch.
- Review playback on devices. Check audio and video in the player on both mobile and desktop, and verify the event page and audience setting.
- Observe server and network load. Track CPU, memory, outbound transfer, and dropped frames during the test, including playlist transitions.
- Plan unattended operations. Process supervision and alerting can help detect or respond to software failures, but they do not guarantee YouTube or VPS uptime. YouTube recommends testing before going live and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. See YouTube’s encoder-stream setup guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube will not accept the stream: confirm live streaming is enabled, the channel is eligible, the event is active, and the encoder has the correct stream URL and key. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Stream health warns about bitrate or connection: check the total output rate, CBR setting, RTMPS connection, and two-second keyframe interval. Reduce output demands or select a Droplet with adequate network capacity, then repeat the test.
- Frames drop or playback stutters: inspect CPU and memory if encoding, and check network and transfer use for either approach. Test encoding versus relaying as separate workloads; no official minimum Droplet size is established for this use.
- The stream stops when unattended: inspect encoder or relay logs, process state, network connectivity, and YouTube stream health. Supervision and alerting may improve recovery handling, but do not eliminate failures.
- The full-day replay is missing or incomplete: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter events and/or a separate recording workflow, and verify archive output before depending on it.
- Chat or interaction controls are absent: this is expected for Made for Kids streams for several features, including live chat and comments. Keep the audience setting accurate rather than changing it to restore unavailable controls.
