The creator must launch it: an encoder stream needs to send its feed, show a preview in Live Control Room, and then be taken live; a webcam stream must be opened from Manage and launched with Go Live. A configured trailer can play on the event page before the broadcast begins.
What “Upcoming” means
YouTube uses “Upcoming” for a scheduled video that has not streamed yet. A scheduled event may appear in subscribers’ feeds before its start; reaching the listed time does not, by itself, start the broadcast. The creator still needs to launch the event. Check whether you are seeing a trailer
If video is playing on the scheduled watch page before the live event begins, it may be the event’s configured trailer. YouTube says a trailer plays on the watch page before the live stream starts. A trailer is pre-stream content, not proof that the study broadcast is live.
What the creator should do
The launch steps depend on how the stream was set up. If you are a viewer, contact the creator and ask them to check the relevant workflow below.

If the study stream uses an encoder
- In the encoder, verify that the server URL and stream key are the ones for the intended YouTube event.
- Start sending the feed from the encoder.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the stream preview to appear.
- Click Go live in Live Control Room. Sending a feed and seeing a preview are not the final launch step.

If it uses a webcam
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live tab and go to Manage.
- Select the scheduled stream.
- Click Go Live to launch that event.

Make sure it is a Live event, not a Premiere
A YouTube Live stream is real-time media. A Premiere is a new video watched with the creator and community, and it follows a different format. If the page behaves differently from a live broadcast, confirm the event type in YouTube Studio rather than relying on the title alone. YouTube explains the distinction in Watch live streams – Computer.
Quick troubleshooting by symptom
- The event time has arrived, but the page still says Upcoming: ask the creator to confirm they started the feed and completed the launch step for their method.
- The encoder is running, but there is no preview: check that it is sending a feed to the correct YouTube server URL with the stream key for this event.
- The preview is visible, but viewers still see Upcoming: the creator should click Go live in Live Control Room.
- A webcam event remains Upcoming: the creator should select that scheduled event under Manage and click Go Live.
- A video plays before the broadcast: check whether a trailer was configured for the event.
- The page is not behaving like a live broadcast: verify whether the event is a Premiere instead of a Live stream.
