Choose a resolution and bitrate your computer and internet connection can sustain, test the complete playback before going public, and plan a local recording: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay.
Start with YouTube’s live encoder settings
YouTube’s live-stream guidance—not its separate video-upload settings—is the right reference for OBS. The current recommendations support H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, at up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. These are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted operation. YouTube’s live encoder settings
OBS labels and available hardware encoders can vary by OBS version and computer. Set the corresponding controls available in your installation, choose an encoder compatible with your machine, then verify the result in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you can sustain
Pick a target format first, then use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for that codec and format. These examples are from YouTube’s livestream table, not its upload recommendations:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 target | YouTube bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
Other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates have different recommendations; check YouTube’s full live encoder table rather than assuming the examples apply to your setup. A higher target is only useful if the source video, encoder, and sustained upload capacity can support it. YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes for different viewer devices.
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. Test under the network conditions you expect during the broadcast: other users and devices can reduce usable upload capacity, and a backup feed also needs bandwidth. A headline broadband speed does not establish that a connection will sustain a long stream. YouTube’s streaming tips

Set up the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restriction within the past 90 days before it can livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create a livestream or schedule one, then open its stream settings to retrieve the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this handoff.
- Protect the key. In OBS, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: it directs and authenticates the encoder feed. Do not share it publicly; reset it if compromised. YouTube explains stream-key management at Manage live stream settings.
- Apply the encoder settings. Use RTMPS where available, a supported codec and encoder, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and the bitrate appropriate to your selected format and real upload capacity.
- Test privately or unlisted before the long session. Send representative footage with its actual audio, motion, transitions, and repeat behavior. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the event public.
Make prerecorded playback reliable for a long session
OBS settings alone cannot make an all-day stream reliable. The complete path includes the media source, audio, transitions, encoder workload, network, YouTube event, and local recording. Test the exact segment and intended looping behavior from beginning to end before relying on it for a public session; there is no single universal OBS preset or looping workflow established for every source file and machine.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators while testing, and check YouTube’s stream health and audio/video quality.
- Monitor the stream preview and watch page after going live; confirm audio is present and the intended video is playing.
- If keeping a local archive, confirm the recording file is growing and that the available storage can accommodate the session. Storage requirements depend on bitrate, duration, and recording format.
- When ending the broadcast, end the YouTube event and stop OBS. If the replay matters, verify the local recording is usable rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour replay risk
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but cautions: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That makes a local recording important if the full session must be preserved. Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete YouTube replay. YouTube’s archive guidance

Copyright, policies, and monetization still apply
Prerecorded material is still livestream content for rights and policy purposes. YouTube’s livestream terms require compliance with its Community Guidelines and that the broadcaster have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including music rights. Use only material you own or are licensed to use for this purpose. YouTube livestream terms
YouTube describes monetization controls for eligible channels, but that does not establish that a particular channel or repetitive 24/7 format will qualify. Check the current rules and your channel’s Studio status; do not treat a loop’s format as a guarantee of approval or monetization. Encoder setup · Manage live stream settings

Troubleshoot common long-stream problems
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: verify the event’s server URL and stream key in OBS, confirm the correct event is selected, and reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- Stream health reports connection trouble or frames drop: test sustained upload capacity, reduce bitrate or target resolution/frame rate if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Video or audio is missing in the preview: check the OBS source and audio routing, then test again with representative content before going public.
- Encoding overload or dropped frames appear in OBS: inspect OBS’s encoding indicators and use an available compatible encoder; test a less demanding output target if the machine cannot sustain the selected one.
- The YouTube replay is incomplete or absent after a very long session: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use and verify a local recording when the archive matters.
