YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, but the right bitrate is the one your connection can sustain reliably, with room to spare. These are general YouTube live recommendations—not a music-specific preset.
Recommended settings for a 24/7 music stream

YouTube also lists 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. Those are codec- and format-specific recommendations; do not apply the H.264 1080p figure to a different combination. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, accessed October 3, 2026.
Choose a bitrate your connection can hold
A bitrate that looks good on paper is not useful if your upload connection cannot sustain it for hours. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a quality that remains reliable on the available connection. Its guidance recommends leaving 20% headroom: the primary stream bitrate plus any backup stream bitrate, with that headroom, should fit within upload capacity.
- Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to your planned broadcast.
- Account for the encoder’s video and audio output and any backup ingest stream.
- If the connection is marginal, lower resolution or bitrate before going live rather than hoping the stream will recover from repeated instability.
- For a mostly static visual, 30 fps is a sensible starting choice; prioritize a stable stream over a higher setting your connection cannot reliably sustain.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio and your encoder
- Enable live streaming in advance. For a first-time live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a stream with an encoder.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the stream’s Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the ingest details in your encoder. Use the provided URL and key, select RTMPS if available, then set the video, audio, rate-control, bitrate, and keyframe options above.
- Protect the stream key. It functions like a password for your feed. Do not share it publicly; reset it if it is compromised.
- Test the actual program. Before launch, check the real playlist audio and visual—not just a silent test card. Listen for clipping, silence, channel imbalance, and abrupt transitions, and verify that the visual is moving or changing as intended.
- Watch Live Control Room after going live. Check stream health and messages, especially at the start. A successful connection does not prove that every part of a long playlist will play correctly.
Plan for a long-running broadcast
Keep the encoder, power, and network running
A do-it-yourself 24/7 stream depends on the device running the encoder, its power supply, and its internet connection remaining available. Plan how you will handle power interruptions, network drops, encoder restarts, silent playback, and a visual that gets stuck. These are practical operating precautions, not extra YouTube-required encoder settings. If you configure a backup ingest, include its bitrate in your upload-capacity calculation.
Do not rely on YouTube for a full-length replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive recording as a backup. If preserving a complete replay matters, record locally and consider dividing the programming into shorter sessions rather than treating a continuous 24/7 broadcast as a dependable archive. Local storage capacity depends on the recording’s codec, bitrate, duration, and machine; an external drive is optional storage, not a fixed-size requirement. Set realistic DVR expectations
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind, but its capabilities may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, especially when a stream exceeds 12 hours. Do not promise viewers that they can rewind through the entire broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s DVR on live streams guidance, accessed October 3, 2026.
Clear music rights before you choose the playlist
Copyright is a go-live requirement, not a setting to fix after the stream starts. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material that remains in the stream, it may interrupt or terminate the broadcast; strikes can also end it. You need rights that cover live streaming, and should check whether the grant also covers the relevant territories, visual component, and archiving or replay.

- Confirm that the license explicitly covers live use; permission for an ordinary upload or personal listening does not establish livestream rights.
- Ask the rights holder whether the channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.”
- Keep license records and any allowlisting confirmation where the channel operator can access them.

Do not treat YouTube Creator Music as clearance for a live playlist. YouTube’s Creator Music usage details say its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams. That page describes availability for US creators in the YouTube Partner Program and says expansion beyond the US is pending; availability may vary by region and account.
Troubleshoot common problems
