For one uncomplicated prerecorded stream on a minimal Linux VPS, 2 GB of RAM is a cautious starting estimate—not an official YouTube or FFmpeg minimum, and not a guarantee. A 1 GB VPS may be adequate for a very lean setup that copies compatible video and audio without filters, but leaves less room for Linux and supporting services. The workload, especially whether FFmpeg re-encodes the video, matters more than the fact that the stream is “live.”
Why there is no single RAM requirement
YouTube’s published encoder guidance does not specify how much RAM a VPS must have, and FFmpeg has no universal memory requirement for this job. The 2 GB starting estimate and possible 1 GB stream-copy case come from iTechGuides (2026), which describes them as rules of thumb rather than tested guarantees or official requirements.
Memory use depends on whether the server copies the input’s existing encoded tracks or decodes and re-encodes them; the resolution and frame rate; filters; the number of simultaneous outputs; the operating system; and other running services. The available evidence does not establish a reliable RAM-per-resolution formula or a fixed memory increase for transcoding.
Choose a VPS for the actual workload
One stream with compatible files
If the prerecorded file’s video and audio already match the output you intend to send, FFmpeg may be able to stream-copy the tracks rather than re-encode them. A 1 GB instance may be worth testing for this lean case, but 2 GB is a more cautious initial allocation for one uncomplicated stream on a minimal Linux system.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Re-encoding, filters, or multiple streams
Allow more resources if the job must transcode, apply filters, run multiple streams, or share the server with other services. Do not assume that doubling the resolution means a predictable increase in RAM: the evidence here does not quantify memory by resolution or processing setting. CPU allocation also matters, particularly when encoding rather than copying tracks.
Check more than memory
- CPU: Check the available CPU allocation and measure its use during the real encoding workload.
- Outbound bandwidth: Estimate the stream’s bitrate and confirm the VPS can sustain it, including headroom.
- Disk: Make sure there is room for the video file and any other files the setup needs.
- Network and service terms: Check the provider’s current limits and continuous-use terms; an advertised VPS size alone does not establish that its network or terms suit a nonstop stream.
- Other processes: Account for the operating system, monitoring, and any services sharing the instance.
Check the video against YouTube’s ingest guidance
RAM is only one part of a working setup. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; these are recommended ingest bitrates, not RAM requirements or proof of the VPS’s available upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate. That is a bandwidth recommendation, not a memory allowance. Use RTMPS when supported: YouTube recommends it as encrypted delivery. Before relying on the stream, test it with the intended video and settings, including audio and motion, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. See encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips.
Set up and test before leaving it running
- Confirm YouTube eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to enable live streaming. Check the channel’s live-streaming status before troubleshooting the VPS. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- Inspect the source file. Confirm its video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Decide whether its tracks can be copied or whether your workflow requires transcoding or filters.
- Start with appropriate headroom. For one uncomplicated stream on a minimal Linux VPS, use 2 GB as a cautious estimate rather than a guaranteed threshold. Test a 1 GB instance only if the workload is lean and stream-copies compatible tracks.
- Run the actual job. Test with the same file, FFmpeg command, stream settings, and background services you will use continuously. Check memory and CPU during operation; increase resources if the system shows pressure or the process is unstable.
- Verify the delivery path. Use RTMPS where supported, leave YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom, and check stream health, audio, and motion during a test. Do not infer stability from a successful short launch alone.
- Check ongoing costs and limits. Compare the VPS’s recurring price, storage, sustained outbound transfer, resource allocation, and continuous-use terms. The evidence available here does not establish current Indian VPS plan prices or providers’ terms, so verify them directly before choosing a plan.
Common problems and what to check
- The process is terminated or the system runs out of memory: Check actual memory use and other processes while the job runs. Reduce unnecessary services or move to a larger allocation; re-encoding, filters, and concurrent streams may require more resources.
- Video stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health: Check CPU load, outbound capacity, network stability, and whether the configured bitrate leaves the recommended bandwidth headroom. RAM alone does not establish that the server can sustain the stream.
- The file will not stream as expected: Check whether its codecs and settings match the intended output. A file that requires transcoding or filters changes the workload; do not assume the lightest stream-copy estimate applies.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm live-streaming eligibility, encoder settings, and the selected ingest protocol. A VPS memory upgrade will not resolve an account restriction or an incompatible output setting.
- The stream starts but is not reliable over time: Monitor memory, CPU, network performance, and YouTube stream health under the real workload. A short test is useful, but it does not prove continuous stability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not administer FFmpeg and a VPS, StreamNeo keeps a prerecorded YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day.
