To run a continuous YouTube livestream from Google Cloud, start a Linux Compute Engine VM, configure an encoder to send video to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and set up process supervision, monitoring, and recovery. A VM can keep an encoder running independently of your home computer, but this setup does not guarantee uninterrupted service: the encoder, VM, network path, and YouTube ingest can each fail.

Before you build: enable YouTube Live

Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before provisioning around a launch time. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and enablement guidance.

Choose what the VM will do

The VM can either encode a source in software or relay a feed that is already encoded. Software encoding gives you control over output settings but uses CPU resources; relaying an already encoded source can require less processing, provided the incoming stream is compatible. The necessary machine size depends on that workload and the output resolution and frame rate. No particular Compute Engine machine type is established as sufficient for a given stream here, so test CPU headroom with your actual source and settings rather than relying on a generic size recommendation.

For prerecorded material, check that you have the rights to stream it and decide how playback should behave at the end of the file: stop, restart, or continue into a playlist. Looping and reconnect handling are encoder- and configuration-specific; verify the syntax and behavior against the current documentation for the encoder you choose.

Create and prepare the Google Cloud VM

  1. Create a Compute Engine instance. In the Google Cloud Console, open Compute Engine and create an instance. Choose a Linux image, zone, machine type, boot disk, and network configuration appropriate to your workload. Google also documents creating instances with gcloud or the REST API; see Create and start a Compute Engine instance.
  2. Install the encoder and make the source available. Install the encoder using its current official instructions. Confirm that the VM can read the source continuously, whether it is a file on the VM or an accessible feed. If you are encoding rather than relaying, leave enough CPU capacity for sustained encoding at the resolution and frame rate you select.
  3. Configure network access deliberately. Allow the VM to make outbound connections required by your source and YouTube ingest. Review Compute Engine networking documentation and account for network transfer and any external IP resources in your cost estimate.

Do not treat a startup script as a complete reliability system. Compute Engine startup scripts run at boot; on Linux they run when networking is available. They can launch setup commands, but ongoing supervision, restart policy, log review, and alerting need to be configured separately. See Google Cloud startup scripts.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the Stream tab. Create a stream or reuse the appropriate stream settings.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s destination settings. The exact field names vary by encoder. YouTube’s walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Prefer RTMPS when supported by your encoder and the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted ingest option; consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for supported protocols, codecs, and settings.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It functions as a credential for sending video to the stream. Do not place it in a public script, shared screenshot, or repository; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Set output quality and keyframes

Choose settings that both the VM can sustain and YouTube accepts. YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by resolution and frame rate, so use the current table in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different output.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Match the source and your encoding capacity. Higher output settings increase the encoder workload and outbound data rate.
  • Bitrate: Set a constant bitrate within YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate. The VM’s available network capacity must exceed the total stream bitrate; YouTube notes that the stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth.
  • Keyframes: Use a 2-second interval where possible and do not exceed 4 seconds, following YouTube’s published guidance.
  • Protocol and codecs: Choose a protocol and codec supported by both the encoder and YouTube’s current ingest settings. Prefer RTMPS when available.

Automate startup, supervision, and recovery

Configure the VM to start the encoder after boot, then use a service manager or equivalent process supervisor to restart it if the process exits. A startup script can launch setup actions but does not by itself monitor a long-running encoder or guarantee a restart after a later failure. Keep logs accessible and check them after restarts so you can distinguish an encoder error, missing input, network interruption, or rejected YouTube connection.

There are multiple failure points: the VM can stop, the source can disappear, the encoder can crash, and the ingest connection can drop. Define what should happen for each case, and test that the recovery behavior does not create overlapping encoder processes or send an unintended stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing failover in its streaming tips.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Start the encoder and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the stream public.
  2. Verify both video and audio, and confirm that the selected resolution and frame rate are being received as expected.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and inspect the encoder logs for warnings or recurring reconnects.
  4. Test the failure modes you intend to recover from, such as stopping the encoder process or interrupting its input. Confirm the supervisor restarts it and that the encoder reconnects as intended.
  5. Check the resulting watch page using the intended privacy setting. Do not rely on an untested configuration for an unattended continuous broadcast.

Plan for archives and long-running broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its published guidance does not establish that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will produce one complete archive. If you need a complete recording of a longer broadcast, arrange separate recording and test the current YouTube workflow rather than assuming the archive will cover the entire session. See YouTube’s encoder stream guidance.

Estimate Google Cloud costs for your configuration

There is no single meaningful monthly VM price for this setup without a region, machine type, disk, runtime, and network assumptions. Compute Engine charges depend on the resources selected; network transfer and external IP use can add costs. Your bitrate and how continuously you stream affect the amount of data leaving the VM. Estimate your own configuration with the Google Cloud pricing calculator and review network pricing and external IP pricing for the relevant resources. Recalculate if you change region, uptime, output settings, or source delivery method.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days, and has completed first-time enablement. Initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube receives no signal: Confirm that the encoder is running, the source is readable, and the server URL and stream key match the stream selected in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
  • The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Compare the chosen bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for the resolution and frame rate. Check that the VM has sufficient network capacity; YouTube says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth.
  • The VM becomes CPU-bound: If encoding in software, reduce the encoding workload or test a larger machine type. If you are relaying an already encoded feed, verify the incoming format and whether the encoder is transcoding unexpectedly.
  • The process stops and stays stopped: Check the service manager’s status and logs. A startup script only runs during boot; configure ongoing process supervision and test its restart behavior.
  • The broadcast ends but there is no complete archive: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer sessions, use a separately tested recording plan.
  • Costs exceed expectations: Check VM runtime, machine and disk selection, network transfer, bitrate, and external IP use in the Cloud billing details, then revise the estimate for your actual region and usage.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream rather than managing an encoder VM, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video to YouTube, not a camera feed. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
