To make an Amazon IVS Low-Latency broadcast more reliable, first identify where the failure occurs: the encoder, the broadcaster’s network, the route to IVS, IVS service operations, or viewer playback. Check IVS Stream Health and session analytics for bitrate, frame rate, audio bitrate, and starvation events; then match the fix to the symptom. IVS does not automatically fail over ingestion or transcoding, so recovery must be designed into the encoder or application.

Start by locating the problem

Ask whether all viewers began buffering at roughly the same time, or whether reports are limited to a particular device, ISP, or network. A broadcaster interruption can affect many viewers at once because IVS has no new content to deliver. But audience reports alone do not establish the cause: viewer bandwidth, competing local traffic, manual quality selection, adaptive-bitrate behavior, or ISP congestion can also cause playback problems. See AWS’s Amazon IVS troubleshooting guidance.

  • Broad, simultaneous impact: inspect the broadcast session and ingest path first, while checking for service events.
  • One device or network affected: investigate viewer bandwidth, selected quality, device conditions, and ISP congestion before changing the encoder.
  • Unclear scope: compare timestamps of viewer reports with stream-health metrics and session events.

What is stream starvation?

Stream starvation means IVS is receiving fewer bits over time than the encoder said it would send. AWS identifies the encoder, local network conditions, and the route over the public internet to IVS as common causes. A starvation indication is therefore a reason to investigate the broadcast side and first-mile path; it does not by itself prove an IVS service fault.

Inspect the session before changing settings

Use the IVS Stream Health dashboard to examine video bitrate, frame rate, and audio bitrate over time. Check stream-health analytics for encoder configuration, ingest metrics, and session events. Look for whether a metric changed before the reported playback problem, and whether audio and video were affected together. CloudWatch provides IVS metrics and alarms; use the official CloudWatch monitoring documentation for current metric details.

How do I monitor stream-starvation events?

AWS recommends using EventBridge stream-health change events to detect starvation start and end. Create event rules and targets that alert the operations team or trigger a response appropriate to your system. Use the Stream Health dashboard for live diagnosis, CloudWatch for metrics and alarms, and IVS session analytics for current or retrospective investigation. These tools complement one another rather than serving the same purpose.

Do not adopt an arbitrary universal bitrate alarm threshold. Derive thresholds from the production encoder profile and the baseline observed during healthy broadcasts; account for normal variation in your content and network. AWS states that CloudWatch IVS statistics are retained for 15 months. Its documented high-resolution rollups are 3 hours at one-second resolution, 15 days at 60-second resolution, 63 days at five-minute resolution, and 455 days at one-hour resolution. These are AWS documentation figures accessed in 2026; confirm current retention and rollup details in the live documentation before relying on them operationally.

Check the broadcaster’s network and route to IVS

When the broadcast metrics suggest inconsistent delivery, check whether other processes or devices are consuming bandwidth. If local capacity or the route between your ISP and IVS appears insufficient, AWS recommends contacting the ISP for network diagnostics. For a fixed broadcaster whose Wi-Fi is unreliable, wired Ethernet is an option to consider, but it is not a guaranteed cure for congestion or a substitute for diagnosing the route.

Verify that the broadcast network permits the destination, protocol, and ports used by your encoder. AWS lists these paths for IVS Low-Latency Streaming:

AWS says the IVS_LOW_LATENCY IP subnets must be accessible regardless of the selected AWS Region because streamers may connect to any subnet. Consult the current IVS network requirements and AWS IP range data before modifying production firewall rules: the live lists can change. AWS notes that the network details do not apply to AWS PrivateLink ingest.

Review encoder settings and reconnection behavior

Keyframe interval

AWS recommends a two-second keyframe interval as a standard setting. A one-second interval may reduce latency, but can cause the player’s adaptive-bitrate (ABR) logic to switch resolutions more often and may increase buffering in some conditions. Do not set keyframes above five seconds: AWS warns this can increase startup latency and leave segments without an IDR/keyframe, risking decode errors or visual distortion. See the IVS streaming configuration guidance.

Broadcast software and forwarding

AWS’s setup guide recommends native IVS Broadcast SDKs, especially for production scenarios; the IVS console can be useful for testing, and compatible third-party software or hardware encoders are other options. AWS strongly recommends against using a third-party service to restream or forward content to IVS because it adds latency. Choose the supported broadcast path that fits your application and protocol, and verify its configuration against the IVS streaming setup guide.

Reconnect after a broadcast interruption

AWS documents that if an encoder stops sending data, IVS waits 30 seconds and then disconnects. Reconnecting—manually or automatically—starts a new stream. Configure and test the encoder or client’s reconnection behavior for your actual workflow; do not assume IVS will keep ingest alive or automatically fail over to another ingest path.

How do I diagnose stream instability using IVS Stream Health?

  1. Open the affected broadcast session in IVS Stream Health and note the time range of the symptom.
  2. Compare video bitrate, frame rate, and audio bitrate over that interval. Identify which values changed first and whether the changes align with reported playback issues.
  3. Review stream-health analytics for encoder configuration, ingest metrics, and session events; check CloudWatch metrics and any EventBridge starvation events for matching timestamps.
  4. Use the pattern to choose the next check: investigate encoder output and local bandwidth when broadcast metrics dip; inspect egress and protocol reachability when the local setup appears healthy but delivery remains unstable; investigate viewer-side conditions when only certain devices or networks are affected.
  5. Record the session and event details before changing settings, then make one targeted change and observe the next session so you can tell whether it addressed the likely cause.

Understand IVS failover limits

IVS uses a global data plane, and streamers automatically ingest to a nearby point of presence. That does not mean ingestion or transcoding automatically fails over. AWS states: “Amazon IVS does not provide automated failover for ingestion or transcoding failures.” Broadcasters should configure their encoder or client to re-ingest after broadcast failures. Regional control-plane failover is not native either; applications that require it need application-side logic. AWS says it has no official guidance for managing regional channel failover, so treat any design as application-specific rather than an AWS-supported recipe. See IVS resilience guidance and the troubleshooting page.

When to contact AWS Support

For an IVS Broadcast SDK error, retrieve the unique broadcast session identifier using the relevant platform API and share it with AWS Support. The identifier helps support investigate the session; it does not diagnose or resolve the error on its own. Also verify that the SDK version is current and review its release notes, since fixes and behavior can vary by release. See the IVS Broadcast SDK documentation.

AWS troubleshooting documentation states that IVS maintains a 99.9% SLA. Treat that as a service-documentation statement, not a blanket promise of uninterrupted streaming; consult the current Amazon IVS SLA terms for contractual scope and conditions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than a live camera or an IVS application, StreamNeo is a different kind of service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is YouTube-only and does not replace IVS for interactive application streaming. Start the free first day.
