For a YouTube Live stream from a VPS, a practical starting point for a low-motion devotional visual is H.264 at 720p30, 3 Mbps video, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network route in India can sustain them. Test from the VPS and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.
Recommended settings for YouTube Live
The figures below apply specifically to YouTube Live using H.264. Bitrate recommendations depend on the destination, codec, resolution, and frame rate; if you stream to another platform, follow that platform’s ingest specifications instead. YouTube Help’s encoder guidance gives the following recommended video bitrates; its page does not state when the table was published or updated.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its published H.264 recommendations are 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 8 Mbps at 1080p30. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Choose 720p or 1080p based on the source and VPS
For a largely static devotional image or slow-moving scene, 720p30 at the recommended 3 Mbps is a reasonable conservative start. A higher resolution does not automatically improve a source that is itself low-resolution, and it increases the outbound bitrate the VPS must sustain. If the source has meaningful fine detail or motion and you want 1080p30, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps video.

- Consider how much motion and detail the visual contains.
- Account for viewers using different devices and internet connections.
- Check the destination platform’s bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Confirm your VPS plan’s sustained outbound capacity and any traffic or bandwidth limits.
- If the VPS must encode the file, check that its CPU can keep up; streaming already-encoded media without re-encoding has different CPU demands.
Calculate the VPS upload capacity you need
At the 720p30 starting point, 3 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio totals 3.128 Mbps before transport overhead. The connection needs additional headroom for overhead and bitrate variation. There is no verified universal capacity figure for an India-based VPS: actual throughput depends on the provider, plan, region, route, and traffic terms.
- Run an upload-speed test from the actual VPS, not only from your home connection. YouTube Help recommends testing upload bitrate.
- Compare the measured, sustained outbound capacity with the combined stream bitrate plus operational headroom.
- Send a representative stream and monitor the platform’s stream-health indicator before treating the VPS as production-ready.
A speed test is only a check at a point in time; it does not establish that a provider will sustain a particular rate continuously. Review your VPS provider’s egress and data-transfer terms as well as the measured connection.

Adapt this FFmpeg settings fragment
This is an illustrative settings fragment for a YouTube Live H.264 720p30 example, not a complete command guaranteed to work with every file or VPS. It assumes a suitable input file with the audio and video you intend to stream. Obtain the ingest address and stream key from YouTube Studio’s live control room, and keep the key private: do not publish it or expose it in logs.

The audio options select AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the exact ingest address supplied in its control room.

Adapt the command to the actual media. If the file is not 30 fps or 720p, use appropriate frame-rate and scaling filters rather than assuming the example matches it. If audio is in a separate file, the input and mapping need to reflect that layout. The -stream_loop -1 option loops the specified input; it does not automatically create a coordinated playlist from multiple files or a separate audio playlist. Check FFmpeg’s documentation for command-line options and codec options.
Check rights and YouTube Live requirements
Technical settings do not grant permission to stream the devotional recording, music, artwork, or other material. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the applicable rights for every part of a playlist. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization rules are separate from whether a stream can technically connect; consult YouTube’s current policies before building a monetized channel around repeated or third-party material.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
- YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient bitrate: test outbound throughput from the VPS during representative conditions, verify egress limits, and reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- The stream connects but video stutters: check CPU usage if FFmpeg is encoding, confirm the source and output frame rates, and verify the VPS is not oversubscribed or throttled.
- Video appears soft or scaled incorrectly: confirm the source dimensions and explicitly scale to the intended output resolution; a bitrate setting alone does not set resolution.
- Audio is missing or mismatched: inspect the input’s audio streams and FFmpeg mapping. The example assumes audio is present in the input file.
- The stream fails to authenticate or connect: confirm the current RTMPS ingest address and stream key in YouTube Studio, and check that the key has not been changed or exposed.
- The file ends and the stream stops: confirm that the intended input is looped and that the media layout is compatible with the command. A single-input loop is not a playlist manager.
