To show a countdown between lessons, add it to your OBS output: use a Browser Source with a countdown webpage for a live timer, or play a pre-rendered countdown video as a break segment. YouTube receives the finished scene through OBS; its scheduling tools do not create the timer. Test the transitions before leaving the stream unattended, and plan for stream restarts rather than assuming one YouTube session can run forever.
Choose how the countdown will appear
OBS does not provide a ready-made countdown widget in the Browser Source or standard Text Source described in its documentation. The timer itself must come from a webpage or a video. Choose based on how often lesson lengths change and how much automation your scene setup needs.
| Approach | What you prepare | Best fit | Transition considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live countdown | A countdown webpage, loaded as an OBS Browser Source. It can be a local HTML file or a URL. | Lessons with changing durations, since the timer can be updated without rendering a new video. | Show the source in the lesson scene, or switch to a break scene that contains it. The Browser Source displays the page; it does not itself schedule scene changes. OBS Browser Source documentation |
| Pre-rendered countdown | A countdown video added as an OBS Media Source, or a clip in an OBS VLC Video playlist. | A fixed break duration and a repeatable visual. | A VLC Video source can play a playlist and has a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for that source to appear. This capability alone does not establish a complete lesson-and-break scheduler. OBS Media Sources documentation |
For either option, make the remaining time large and high-contrast against the study background. Check it at the size viewers will see in the stream preview, not just in the OBS canvas.
Build the timer and break scene in OBS
Option A: Add a live countdown webpage
- In OBS, create or select the scene that shows the study visual.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Browser source. Choose the local-file option for an HTML page on the streaming computer, or enter the webpage URL.
- Set the Browser Source dimensions to match the area you intend to use, then position and size it in the preview. In the source list, place it above the study visual so it is visible.
- For breaks, either show the timer source in the study scene or create a dedicated break scene containing the countdown and any other break graphics. Switch to that scene when a lesson ends.
- Start a test recording or private/unlisted test stream and confirm the timer is readable, starts at the intended duration, and behaves correctly when the scene is shown again. Browser Source loads a webpage; confirm the specific page’s reset and timing behavior yourself.
OBS source order controls which elements appear above others, and sources can be positioned as part of scene composition. A standard OBS Text Source can render text and read from a text file, but the cited documentation does not describe it as a dynamic countdown. OBS Sources Guide · OBS Text Sources documentation

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option B: Play a countdown video
- Render or otherwise prepare a break video with the duration and countdown design you want.
- Add it to a break scene as a Media Source, or use a VLC Video source if you want to arrange multiple clips in a playlist.
- Check the source’s playback behavior and the clip’s duration. If using VLC Video, install VLC first; then arrange the playlist and enable Loop Playlist only if repeating that playlist is what you intend.
- Test how the lesson scene resumes after the break. A playlist can play and loop media, but the cited OBS source documentation does not establish automatic scheduling across a full lesson/break program.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the available media source behavior. Treat automatic cycling as dependent on the particular scene and source workflow you configure, and verify it in a test.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of the broadcast, screenshots, and public chat.
- Start the encoder from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for YouTube’s preview to appear in Live Control Room, check that the timer and lesson-to-break transition are visible, then select Go live as directed in YouTube’s workflow.
- Before operating unattended, run a full test of the scene change, timer duration, audio continuity, and return to the lesson visual. OBS recommends testing settings before the first stream. OBS Quick Start Guide
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts the stream for YouTube; this route supports screen sharing and more advanced production. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide. Scheduling a broadcast helps with promotion and reminders, but the timer still has to be part of the outgoing OBS scene or media. YouTube also distinguishes the broadcast from the stream that carries the encoder output in its Live Streaming API documentation.

Plan for continuity, copyright, and unattended operation
Do not treat “always-on” as an indefinite single session
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That statement does not establish that a single live session can continue indefinitely. If the study channel needs uninterrupted availability, define how you will monitor and restart the encoder or resume a broadcast, and check YouTube’s current limits and workflow before relying on a long session.
Check rights for everything in the stream
Make sure you have the rights to the lesson recordings, background visuals, music, and any other included material. A timer overlay does not change the copyright status of the content around it. Do not assume that a scheduled or continuous format exempts a stream from YouTube’s copyright rules.

Keep a human-readable test plan
- Confirm the countdown is above the background in the source stack and can be read in the YouTube preview.
- Verify that the displayed duration and scene timing match the lesson schedule.
- Test both directions: lesson to break, and break back to lesson.
- Check what happens if a clip ends, a webpage fails to load, or OBS loses its connection; do not leave recovery behavior untested.
- Keep the stream key private and have a restart plan for interruptions.
Troubleshoot common timer problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The timer is missing from the stream. | The Browser Source or media source is hidden, below an opaque source, or absent from the active scene. | Check visibility and source order in OBS; move the timer above the study visual and confirm you are on the intended scene. |
| The timer appears in OBS but not in YouTube’s preview. | The wrong scene may be active, or the encoder preview has not updated. | Confirm the outgoing OBS scene, then wait for the Live Control Room preview and inspect it before selecting Go live. |
| The timer does not count down or restarts at an unexpected time. | The page or media’s own timing and reset behavior may not match the scene workflow. | Test the timer independently, then show and hide the source and repeat the scene transition. Confirm the page or clip is configured for the intended start time and duration. |
| The VLC Video source is unavailable. | VLC is not installed. | Install VLC, restart or refresh OBS as needed, and check the source list again. |
| The scheduled stream is not live after starting OBS. | YouTube may still be waiting for the encoder signal or the scheduled broadcast handoff. | Check the encoder status and preview in Live Control Room; follow the scheduled-stream workflow and click Go live after the preview appears. |
