OBS can loop and shuffle a playlist, but the documented controls do not provide automatic, clock-based switching between subject playlists. For that, you need a separately validated scheduling method—or an operator to switch playlists.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
- Lecture video files that play correctly, with usable audio and video.
- An encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts and sends your video stream.
- A reliable computer, power supply, and internet connection if you stream locally.
Organize lectures into subject playlists
Make one list per subject—for example, mathematics, history, and biology—before configuring your stream. This is an organizational choice, not a YouTube feature that automatically categorizes files stored on your computer. Use clear filenames and check each file’s playback and audio so a broken or silent recording does not reach viewers.
Set up an ordered or shuffled playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source is available when VLC is installed. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the lectures.
- Add the files for one subject. Select that subject’s lecture files for the source’s playlist. Keep other subjects in separate lists so you can choose which subject is playing.
- Choose playback behavior. Turn looping on to repeat the playlist. Leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence, or turn it on for randomized playback. Preview shuffled playback to make sure the sequence still makes sense for teaching.
- Switch subjects deliberately. OBS documents playlist playback, loop, and shuffle controls; the cited documentation does not establish a built-in clock scheduler that changes from one subject playlist to another at set hours. Switch the active list yourself, or use a separately validated scheduling method if timed rotation is essential.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Scheduling provides a page viewers can share and lets them set reminders. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Connect the encoder. Use the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube in OBS. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Send the stream and check the preview. If the stream is scheduled, connect the encoder and start sending before the event, then complete YouTube Studio’s go-live step.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and keep watching audio and video quality. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring in its live-streaming tips.
Choose how subject rotation should work
Ordered loop
Use loop on and shuffle off when students should encounter lectures in a deliberate sequence. This repeats the chosen playlist, not a timetable of different subjects.
Shuffled loop
Use loop and shuffle when randomized repetition is appropriate. Preview the result; a shuffled order may place lessons out of sequence.

Separate playlists with timed changes
Maintain a playlist for each subject, but do not assume OBS’s playlist loop will change subjects at a particular hour. The cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not establish automatic time-of-day switching between lists. If a timetable is required, validate the scheduler or tool you intend to use before relying on it for a continuous channel.
Keep a 24/7 stream operating—and plan archives separately
A loop setting repeats media; it does not guarantee continuous service. With a local encoder, assign someone to monitor the stream and be ready to address playback problems, power loss, internet interruptions, or an encoder stop. Check that source files remain available and that the selected playlist is still playing.

YouTube’s cited encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video. If you need recordings of a round-the-clock schedule, plan and verify an archive workflow separately rather than assuming one 24-hour stream will become one complete replay.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC, then check OBS’s Media Sources documentation for the source requirements.
- A lecture is missing, silent, or fails to play: Test each file before going live and confirm that it is included in the intended subject playlist.
- The same subject keeps repeating: Loop repeats the current playlist. It does not advance to another subject list on a schedule; change the list yourself or validate a separate scheduling method.
- The stream is not appearing in YouTube Live: Check that OBS is connected with the stream URL and key from the correct YouTube stream, that it is sending, and that any scheduled stream has completed the go-live step in Live Control Room.
- The preview or program has poor audio or video: Inspect the Live Control Room preview and monitor the stream continuously, as YouTube recommends.
- You cannot start a live stream: Verify channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation; confirm that there are no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days.
