You can broadcast an authorized local news radio feed continuously on YouTube by sending it through a live encoder: create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder, and send a compatible audiovisual signal. A radio feed alone is audio, so the broadcast also needs a video component, such as station graphics. Continuous operation requires a tested setup and active monitoring; neither YouTube’s guidance nor the steps below guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
Before you start: confirm channel access and rights
Enable live streaming early
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and confirm access before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guide.
Get permission for the complete feed
Confirm in writing that your station’s agreements permit distributing the specific feed on YouTube, including any archive YouTube may create. Check rights for music, syndicated programs, news audio, graphics, and other included material. YouTube’s terms make the provider responsible for necessary rights and applicable territorial requirements; the terms do not determine whether a particular syndication contract covers YouTube. Licensing and regulatory obligations depend on your territory and contracts, so obtain advice specific to your station where needed. Read YouTube’s terms.
YouTube identifies an active live-stream copyright strike and a live stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast as possible reasons for live-stream restrictions. A station feed can contain third-party material, so do not assume that permission to broadcast on radio also covers a YouTube simulcast.

How to set up a continuous radio simulcast
- Verify channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your verified channel and that no restriction prevents you from going live. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Clear the feed’s rights. Obtain confirmation that the station can distribute the full program, including music and syndicated content, on YouTube and in any resulting archive.
- Create the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder workflow. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a signal to your stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the workflow.
- Connect the radio source and video. Choose a software or standalone hardware encoder that accepts your station’s audio source and can send the required video component. Add a suitable visual layer, such as a station graphic or information screen. YouTube documents both software and standalone hardware encoder options, but does not establish a particular product as necessary.
- Enter the stream credentials and configure the encoder. Use the stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the ordinary encoder workflow. Select supported codecs and settings, then match the bitrate to your chosen video, audio, and upload connection.
- Test before launch. Start a test transmission, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and check audio levels, the video layer, the watch page, and upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing and leaving bandwidth headroom; see its network guidance.
- Go live and monitor. Start the encoder transmission and confirm the stream is actually live in Studio. Keep a human monitoring plan and documented recovery steps for lost audio, encoder failure, or network failure. If you use a backup encoder, test the handoff rather than assuming it will work.
- Plan recording and restart behavior. Decide whether the channel should run one long session or scheduled shorter streams, and verify how the archive appears in Studio. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour-or-longer session will produce a single archive.
Encoder settings for a radio-focused stream
Use these as YouTube Help recommendations, not as guarantees of picture quality or uninterrupted service. The right video bitrate depends on the visual layer and resolution; an audio-first program may not need a detailed, high-resolution image.

Keeping a 24/7 broadcast running: practical limits
A continuous broadcast depends on the full chain: station audio source, encoder, internet connection, and YouTube ingestion. YouTube advises preparing the stream, checking the preview and stream health, monitoring while live, and testing encoder failover. These are operating practices, not certification that a particular arrangement will stay online continuously.
- Assign a person to check the stream and respond to source, encoder, or network failures.
- Write down how to restore the audio source, restart or reconnect the encoder, and verify the live output in Studio.
- If you have a backup encoder or connection, rehearse switching to it while monitoring the result.
- Choose planned shorter sessions if a dependable archive is important, then verify the channel’s current archive behavior. The cited YouTube guidance only states automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours.

You cannot start a live stream
Check that the channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and has completed activation. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

The Live Control Room preview is blank or the stream will not connect
Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and current key from the intended Live Control Room stream, and that it is sending a supported signal. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
The broadcast has audio but no useful picture
A radio source does not itself provide video. Confirm the encoder is sending a video layer as well as the station audio and that the visual appears in the Studio preview.

The stream health is poor or the connection drops
Check upload capacity against the total stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the chosen video bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the current settings, then test again. Monitor stream health in Studio.
The archive is missing or not what you expected
Check the stream duration and archive in Studio. YouTube’s encoder guide states automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not promise one archive for an uninterrupted 24-hour-or-longer session. Consider scheduled segments if archives matter.
YouTube blocks or restricts the broadcast
Review rights for all music, programs, and other third-party material, including live and archived use. Check the channel for copyright notices or live-stream restrictions and resolve the underlying rights issue before restarting.
Can you monetize a local news radio livestream?
YouTube’s encoder guide says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream. Eligibility and account-specific monetization rules should be checked in the current Studio interface; monetization is not guaranteed simply by simulcasting a radio feed.
