Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist when it ends. This repeats your media; it does not keep your computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube broadcast online by itself.
What you need
- OBS Studio and the image and audio files you plan to use.
- VLC installed if you want to use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS documentation says a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
- Rights to use the image and recordings in a livestream. A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish permission to broadcast it.

Build the scene in OBS
1. Add the still image
- Open the scene you will use for the stream, or create a new scene in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select + and choose Image.
- Name the source if useful, select the image file, then confirm. Resize or position it in the preview so it fills the canvas as intended.
The Image source supplies the static visual. Keep it in the same scene as the audio source so the image remains visible while the playlist plays.
2. Add a playlist of audio files
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise the VLC source may not be available.
- In OBS Sources, select + and choose VLC Video. Despite “Video” in its name, OBS documents this source for audio and other media files too.
- Create or select the source, then add the local audio files to its playlist in the source properties. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the final item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence, or enable it if randomized order is what you want.
- Confirm the properties and check the OBS audio mixer while playback runs. If needed, adjust the source level so it is audible without clipping.
OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist-capable option and says VLC must be installed for it to appear. The guide describes Shuffle Playlist as off by default. OBS: Media Sources

Choose the right source for your audio

For a single local file, OBS Media Source supports formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV, and its Loop setting repeats the file. Use VLC Video when you need several media items in a playlist. OBS: Media Sources
Check playback before going live
- Start the scene in OBS and confirm the image is visible in the preview.
- Listen for audio, check that the mixer meter responds, and verify that the intended files play in the intended order.
- Wait through the end of the playlist once, if practical, to confirm that Loop Playlist returns playback to the beginning.
- Make a short private or otherwise limited test broadcast if you need to check the audio and image at the destination. Destination-specific live-stream eligibility and rules are separate from configuring OBS sources.
What looping does—and does not—keep running
Loop and Loop Playlist control source playback. They do not guarantee that the computer stays powered, OBS remains open, the internet connection holds, or the streaming destination continues receiving the broadcast. A static image and repeating audio are therefore only the media setup, not an uptime guarantee.

If you choose YouTube HLS ingest, its requirements are a separate destination-side configuration: segments must be 1–4 seconds and in TS format; byte range is unsupported; the playlist must roll with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also notes HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These HLS constraints do not configure the local VLC playlist or establish general 24/7 eligibility. YouTube Help: Use HLS ingest
Common problems and fixes
VLC Video is missing from the source menu
Install VLC, then restart OBS and check the source menu again. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC as specified in the OBS guide.

The playlist stops after the last file
Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. The playlist will restart after reaching its end.
Only one file repeats, but you want several tracks
A Media Source with Loop repeats one file. Use VLC Video and add the separate files to its playlist for multi-item playback.

The picture is visible but there is no sound
Confirm the VLC Video source is in the active scene, playback has started, and the OBS mixer meter responds. Check the selected files and source volume. A still Image source itself does not provide audio.
The playlist order changes unexpectedly
Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Turn it off if you want the listed order to play consistently.

The stream goes offline even though the playlist loops
Source looping cannot recover a powered-off computer, closed OBS, failed connection, or destination interruption. Diagnose the computer, network, encoder, and destination separately; the loop setting only governs media playback.
