How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Stream Reconnect After an Internet Outage

OBS Automatic Reconnect can retry a dropped connection, but it cannot guarantee the YouTube event or your source has recovered. Here’s how to test and troubleshoot the full path.

Enable OBS Studio’s Automatic Reconnect so the encoder retries after a connection drop—but don’t treat that as a guarantee that the YouTube live event will remain active or that a camera or other source has recovered. Check the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, test a real network interruption before leaving the stream unattended, and be ready to restart the intended event if it has ended.

What automatic reconnect does—and what it cannot do

A 24/7 stream depends on three separate parts: the local encoder and its source, the connection from that encoder to YouTube’s ingest service, and the YouTube live event. OBS’s retry feature addresses the encoder’s output connection. It does not, on its own, prove that the YouTube event is still live or that a camera, capture device, or other source has recovered.

YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a universal outage duration after which an event will end, nor does it promise that every event will resume after a network interruption. Treat recovery as something to verify on your own setup, not an assumed guarantee.

Enable and configure OBS automatic reconnect

  1. In OBS Studio, open Settings > Advanced and confirm that Automatic Reconnect is enabled. UI labels and layout can vary between OBS releases and platforms. OBS’s overview guide identifies the reconnect control under Advanced settings.
  2. Set a maximum retry count and starting retry delay appropriate to the interruptions you expect. OBS’s output API describes a finite maximum retry count and a starting wait that doubles on successive attempts. A retry budget that is too small may be exhausted during a prolonged outage; no single retry count suits every connection or deployment. See the OBS Output API Reference.
  3. Save the settings and verify that the encoder is configured for the intended YouTube event before testing. Reconnect attempts are useful only if OBS can reach the correct ingest destination with valid credentials.

Verify the YouTube event, URL, and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the event you intend to use.
  2. Check that the stream URL and stream key configured in OBS match the values for that event. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed; handle it like a password and do not share it publicly. The setup process is described in YouTube’s encoder streaming guide and its live stream settings help.
  3. Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings if you use them. These settings affect whether the encoder can start or stop the stream; YouTube’s cited guidance does not say they guarantee recovery of an event after an outage.
  4. After any interruption, check the Live Control Room rather than relying only on OBS’s status indicator. If the event has ended, follow the intended event workflow to start a stream again.

Test the full recovery path before leaving it unattended

  1. Run a test stream with representative audio and motion, not just a static screen. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the event behaves as expected.
  2. Check the upload bitrate against the connection’s sustainable capacity and monitor stream health in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring health while it runs; its encoder settings guide covers bitrate, resolution, and stream-health checks.
  3. Simulate a brief internet interruption in a controlled test. Observe whether OBS retries, whether the feed returns, and whether the Live Control Room still shows the event as live.
  4. Test source recovery separately where practical. A restored internet connection does not necessarily restart a camera, capture device, or other source that has stopped producing video or audio.
  5. Repeat the test under conditions representative of your real setup. A short successful test does not establish what will happen during a longer outage.

Troubleshoot drops that automatic reconnect does not fix

OBS keeps retrying or reports dropped frames

OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Confirm that your upload capacity is adequate for the configured stream, use wired networking where possible, and check the modem, router, and other network hardware. If the connection remains unstable after local checks, contact your internet service provider. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.

OBS reconnects, but YouTube is not live

Check the Live Control Room to determine the event’s state. Confirm that OBS is sending to the correct stream URL and that its key matches the selected event. If the event ended during the interruption, OBS retry alone may not restore that same event; use the event workflow you intended for the channel.

The internet is back, but the picture or sound is still missing

Inspect the source in OBS independently of the network connection. Check that the camera or capture device is available, selected in the scene, and producing the expected audio and video. Encoder reconnection cannot fix a source that remains offline.

The connection fails again after it briefly returns

Look beyond OBS: check Wi-Fi or Ethernet, router and modem stability, and whether the upload bitrate is sustainable. A cellular failover router may help only if the primary path is the problem and the device, service, and local carrier coverage support failover. Verify those conditions rather than assuming a backup path will switch automatically.

Choose continuity measures for the failure you actually have

  • Encoder-to-YouTube connection drop: OBS Automatic Reconnect retries the output connection, subject to its configured retry limit and increasing delay.
  • Local network or ISP failure: troubleshoot the router, modem, wiring, bandwidth, and provider path; a compatible backup internet path is a separate remedy.
  • Computer, power, or local source failure: reconnecting the encoder cannot help if the computer or source is unavailable. A cloud-hosted prerecorded stream can reduce dependence on a home computer and internet connection, but it does not make a claim about a specific outage guarantee.
  • YouTube event ended: verify the event in Live Control Room and take the appropriate event action; retrying the encoder is not proof that the same event is live.

YouTube’s encoder guide also lists cloud-based tools for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That is a different approach from sending a live camera feed through OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived; that archiving statement is not a reconnection guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OBS reconnecting guarantee that YouTube keeps the same live event open?
