Use Windows Task Scheduler to relaunch your encoder after an update-triggered reboot, then verify that YouTube is actually receiving the stream. These are separate steps: reopening OBS or another encoder does not guarantee the broadcast resumed. YouTube’s auto-start setting controls starting a broadcast from the encoder; it does not launch the encoder after Windows boots.
What you need to set up
- A Windows PC that stays powered on and connected to the internet after updates.
- A streaming encoder configured with the correct scene or source for your study stream.
- A YouTube Live encoder stream, including its stream URL and stream key.
- A Windows account and Task Scheduler trigger suited to how the encoder runs on your PC.
This setup can relaunch the encoder, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Power, internet access, encoder startup, source availability, valid credentials and YouTube accepting the feed all still matter.
Connect your encoder to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the streaming application’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Save the settings and confirm the encoder is configured to use the intended scene, media source or playlist when it opens. YouTube says previously used stream settings can be loaded again, including the stream key; check that the selected stream is the one you want.
Treat the stream key as a credential: YouTube describes it as similar to a stream’s password and address. Do not publish or share it. If you reset the key, replace the old value in the encoder as well. See Manage live stream settings.
Choose a Windows startup trigger
Task Scheduler offers system-start and user-logon triggers. Choose based on whether your encoder works in the run context you configure, not simply on which trigger runs sooner. Microsoft documents these as distinct trigger types in its Task Scheduler trigger reference.

Microsoft’s schtasks create reference uses /sc onstart for a task scheduled at system startup. See schtasks create. The documentation establishes trigger behavior, not a universally correct unattended OBS configuration; test your actual Windows account, encoder and sources.
Create the scheduled task
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu.
- Choose Create Task and give it a recognizable name, such as Start YouTube study stream encoder.
- Open the Triggers tab, select New, and choose either At startup or At log on. For a logon trigger, select the account that runs the encoder.
- Open the Actions tab, select New, and set the action to start the encoder executable. Use the correct executable path for the application installed on your PC; do not guess the path. If the encoder needs a working directory or launch arguments, enter the values appropriate to your installation.
- Review the task’s security and conditions settings. Configure it to run in the context the encoder needs, and ensure conditions such as power or network requirements do not prevent the intended launch. Avoid assuming that a background, noninteractive task can operate an encoder that depends on a visible desktop.
- Save the task. If prompted, provide the account credentials required by the selected run configuration.
If you prefer the command-line route, Microsoft’s documented startup schedule type is /sc onstart; the exact executable path, task name, permissions and other options depend on your PC. Use Microsoft’s command reference rather than copying an unverified command with guessed paths.

Configure retries for encoder launch failures
In the task’s settings, you can configure Task Scheduler to restart a task after failure, with a retry interval and retry count. Microsoft documents this as the RestartOnFailure setting. Set values appropriate to your environment; the documentation does not prescribe a universal retry count or interval for an encoder.
A retry can relaunch a failed application task. It does not check whether YouTube received the feed, whether the right scene loaded or whether viewers can watch the stream.

Understand YouTube’s auto-start setting
YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop controls let you start or stop a broadcast from the encoder when enabled. They concern broadcast behavior once the encoder is running, not launching the encoder application after a Windows reboot. Configure Windows startup separately, and verify both the encoder and the broadcast after reboot. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
Test recovery after a restart
- Save your work, then restart Windows under controlled conditions, such as before relying on the setup for a long study session.
- If you selected a logon trigger, sign in to the intended account. Check Task Scheduler’s task history or last-run status to see whether the task ran.
- Confirm that the encoder opened, the intended scene or source is present, and the encoder is sending output.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health, then check the public watch page to confirm the stream is available to viewers.
- If the stream does not appear, troubleshoot the encoder and feed before treating the scheduled task as successful. YouTube recommends checking preview, stream health and availability; see its live streaming tips for computers.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not come back
