To broadcast a prerecorded podcast as a YouTube Live stream, schedule or create a Live event in YouTube Studio, play the finished file through an encoder, and enter that event’s stream URL and key in the encoder. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before clicking Go live. The stream key connects an encoder to YouTube; it does not upload or play the podcast for you.

What a YouTube stream key does

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key is the credential an encoder uses to send a live feed to YouTube. A separate playback tool or device must play the prerecorded podcast and send its audio and video as that feed. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains how to find and manage the key.

Before you start

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. If YouTube blocks setup, check the current Live Control Room for channel-specific requirements.
  • Choose an encoder that can play a finished podcast file, send its output to YouTube, and support RTMPS where possible. It should also be able to run for the full broadcast without interruption.
  • Check that you have the rights to the podcast’s audio, video, music, artwork, and any other material you include. A stream key does not grant rights to copyrighted material or bypass YouTube’s rules.
  • Keep the stream key private. Do not show it in a screenshot, overlay, recording, or public instructions.

Set up the prerecorded broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Select Create > Go Live. For a broadcast you want to promote in advance, open Manage and schedule a stream. YouTube says a scheduled event provides a watch page that you can share and lets viewers set reminders. See YouTube’s guidance on creating a live stream with an encoder.
  2. Prepare the encoder’s playback. Load the finished podcast file into software or hardware capable of playing prerecorded media into a live output. Set the episode’s video, audio, and any graphics in that tool; the key itself does not supply these.
  3. Copy the event’s connection details. In Live Control Room, select the stream or scheduled event and copy its stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, choose its YouTube preset if available. Otherwise, paste the URL into the server or stream URL field and the key into the stream-key field. Confirm that you selected the details for the intended event.
  4. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS. To get the secure address, use the lock control for Stream URL in Live Control Room and copy the RTMPS URL into the encoder. If the encoder cannot connect, confirm that the URL begins with rtmps and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that port 443 may be used when the encoder requires it. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings and connection guidance.
  5. Start sending the feed and inspect the preview. Start the encoder’s playback or transmission. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check picture, sound, and stream health. Also make sure the event’s watch page is accessible to the intended audience.
  6. Start and end the live event deliberately. When the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. At the end, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder from sending content.

Allow time to test before the audience arrives

YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before it. These are YouTube’s preparation recommendations, not guarantees that a connection will work. Use the test period to listen for missing or distorted audio, inspect the moving picture, verify the correct event is receiving the feed, and check stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.

Keep the stream key secure

Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube supports reusable custom keys, which can simplify repeated broadcasts, but check that the encoder is connected to the correct event each time. The reviewed YouTube guidance states limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key; confirm the current limits in YouTube Help before planning a production around them.

If the key may have been exposed, open YouTube Studio > Go Live > Stream, reset it, and replace the saved key in the encoder. Do not assume that hiding a leaked key after the fact makes it safe to keep using.

Troubleshoot connection and playback problems

Symptom What to check Fix
No incoming preview The encoder may not be sending, or its URL or key may not match the selected event. Start playback/transmission, then recopy the stream URL and key from the intended event and enter them in the corresponding encoder fields.
RTMPS or SSL connection error The encoder may be using an ordinary RTMP address or may not support RTMPS. Copy the RTMPS address from Live Control Room and confirm encoder support. If its connection setup requires a port, YouTube documents port 443 as a possible configuration.
Picture or sound is weak or unstable The chosen output quality may exceed the available upload connection, or the file or encoder audio/video settings may be unsuitable. Test the actual episode before the event and choose a quality appropriate to the available upload connection. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported RTMP/RTMPS video codecs, and AAC or MP3 for audio; which settings you can select depends on the encoder. Monitor stream health during the test.
The stream stops unexpectedly The encoder or connection may have stopped sending, or the broadcast may have run beyond YouTube’s automatic-archive window. Check the encoder and connection, and plan the broadcast length accordingly. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that automatic archive for a longer stream.

Choose an encoder workflow that fits the show

For a one-off podcast, the key decision is whether the playback tool can send the finished episode reliably for the entire event. Consider whether it can schedule prerecorded playback, use RTMPS, handle the audio and graphics you need, and run unattended. YouTube names AJA HELO Plus with its PlayToStream functionality as a hardware example for scheduling and streaming prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is one option, not a requirement; YouTube’s guidance does not compare the full encoder market or establish current prices. See AJA HELO Plus.
