You can send a community radio station’s program directly to YouTube without using its website player: create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, route the station’s audio and a visual through an encoder, then connect the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Before going live, confirm the channel is eligible and the station’s music rights cover a YouTube simulcast.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well ahead of the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder that can receive the station’s audio and send a feed to YouTube. YouTube describes encoder setups as supporting external audio and video hardware; it does not prescribe a station-specific mixer connection. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A visual for the stream, such as the station logo or program artwork. YouTube is receiving a video stream, even when the main content is radio audio.
- Permission for the station’s content to be transmitted on YouTube, and—if desired—to remain available as an archive. A terrestrial broadcast or website-player license does not by itself establish that YouTube use is covered.
Set up and start the YouTube broadcast
- Enable live streaming and check the channel. Verify the channel and confirm that it has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days. If this is the first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Create → Go Live. Choose the Stream tab for an immediate stream, or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling creates a watch-page URL that the station can share before airtime. The labels and workflow are described in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Connect the station audio to the encoder. Feed the program output into an input the encoder can use. Depending on the station’s equipment, that may be a direct computer connection or external audio hardware such as an audio interface. Check the mixer or playout system’s output connectors and the computer’s available inputs; the right connection depends on the actual setup.
- Add a visual and configure the encoder. Use a station logo, program graphic, or another appropriate visual in the encoder scene. The encoder must send both the program audio and video to YouTube. The exact settings and cabling depend on the encoder and station equipment; the cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal configuration for every station.
- Copy the YouTube connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Test before the program begins. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room before clicking Go live. If appropriate, test with a private or unlisted stream first. Check the watch page on both a phone and a computer, listen for clear program audio, and monitor the broadcast once it starts. YouTube also recommends checking that a local recording is being written; see its live-streaming tips.
- End the stream deliberately. End the broadcast in Studio and stop the encoder feed. If the station needs a dependable recording, keep a local copy rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive.
Make sure music rights cover YouTube
The station is responsible for having the rights needed to use its live content on Google services. YouTube’s livestream terms state that the content provider represents and warrants that it has all necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
Do not assume that a terrestrial broadcast license, web-streaming agreement, or other existing permission covers a YouTube simulcast or an archived copy. Whether a particular station’s agreements cover those uses depends on its country, catalog, territories, and contract terms. Have the station’s rights administrator review the applicable agreements and local requirements before launch.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If it identifies copyrighted content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the station to stop using the material; if the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike may also end a stream. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Even if a station has a license, a live stream may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask relevant rights owners about allowlisting before relying on a music-heavy simulcast. If the stream is archived, Content ID claims can be made after it ends.
Plan for recordings and long broadcasts
YouTube can automatically archive streams that are under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the station needs a reliable full-length recording, make and verify a local recording as well. Check that the permission for the live broadcast also covers retaining the recording. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

When the station’s audio will not reach YouTube
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm that the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the stream in Studio. If the key may be compromised, reset it in Studio and replace it in the encoder.
- The video appears but audio does not: Check that the station’s program output is connected to the encoder’s selected audio input and that the encoder is receiving that input. The required connection depends on the station’s equipment; an external audio interface may be needed if the computer cannot accept a usable signal directly.
- The audio is unclear or missing during a test: Listen to the watch page itself, not only the station’s local monitoring. Check the signal path from playout or mixer through the encoder, then test again before the scheduled broadcast.
- The live feed is interrupted for music: Review YouTube’s notice, confirm the station has the necessary YouTube rights, and contact the relevant rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. A license alone may not prevent automated interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube may not have captured it. Use a verified local recording when retention matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a community station’s pre-recorded programming, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer or home connection running: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. This is for uploaded videos, not a live feed from a studio microphone or camera, so it is not a replacement for the encoder setup above when the station needs to broadcast its live program.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
