1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun FFmpeg in the foreground under a systemd service. Configure systemd to start it at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. First confirm that your FFmpeg command works interactively; the right input, codecs, output protocol, and recovery options depend on your source and destination, so there is no universally correct copy-and-paste streaming command.
Before creating the service, make the FFmpeg command work
A service manager can supervise a process, but it cannot make an invalid FFmpeg command or incompatible stream format work. Test the command interactively under the same Ubuntu account that the service will use. Confirm that the source opens, the destination accepts the output, and media is actually arriving there.
-
Check the installed build with
ffmpeg -version. Ubuntu packages may differ from the newest FFmpeg release; current online documentation is regenerated nightly, so verify unfamiliar options against your installed version and its local help. -
Identify the input: a local file, playlist, capture device, or network stream. Determine whether it must repeat and whether FFmpeg should copy its existing streams or transcode them.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-
Confirm the destination’s required protocol, container, codecs, and credentials. The example below assumes an RTMP-style output, but the title does not specify a destination. Do not use the example’s placeholder URL as a real endpoint.
-
Run the complete command in a terminal and check both FFmpeg’s output and the destination. If it fails, resolve that first rather than troubleshooting systemd and media settings at the same time.
Choose looping and encoding for the source
Repeating a local file
For a local file that should repeat, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option requests infinite looping. The illustrative unit later uses -re to read the file at its native rate. Check the behavior with your file and FFmpeg build before relying on it unattended.
Stream copy or transcode
Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it is suitable only if the destination accepts the input’s codecs and container parameters. Transcoding can make media compatible but uses CPU resources. The example uses AAC audio at 128 kb/s; that is an illustration, not a universal requirement. Check which encoders your installed FFmpeg build supports and follow the destination’s actual specifications. The destination platform and its bitrate requirements are not specified here.

Network inputs and output recovery
Recovery options are protocol-specific. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnection options apply to HTTP input handling; they do not automatically solve every output failure. Its FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP output recovery example. Choose options for the protocol and the side of the connection that is failing. A 2025 FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion illustrates a network-input reconnect question, but an archive post is anecdotal, not a substitute for the relevant FFmpeg documentation or a tested configuration.
Create a systemd unit
Keep FFmpeg as the foreground process in ExecStart=. Do not append & or put shell pipes and redirections directly in that setting: systemd’s service documentation says these shell constructs are not supported there. Systemd’s journal can capture service output; if you need shell behavior, configure an explicit wrapper instead.

Description=FFmpeg bhajan stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/bhajan
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/bhajan/source-file -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv rtmp://STREAM-DESTINATION/APP/STREAM-KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
This is an illustrative unit shape, not an executed or tested configuration. It assumes a local file at /srv/bhajan/source-file, an audio transcode to AAC, and an RTMP-style destination. Adapt the executable path, account, working directory, source, encoding, output format, and destination to your setup. Replace the placeholder endpoint and key with valid destination details; never leave the literal placeholder URL in a deployed unit.
Protect the stream key
A stream key is a credential. Restrict access to the unit and any files or scripts containing it, use a service account with only the required permissions, and avoid printing the key in logs. The appropriate secret-management method depends on your destination and local setup; the cited software documentation does not prescribe one.

Set restart behavior—and understand what it cannot fix
Restart=on-failure is a reasonable starting policy for a long-running FFmpeg process. RestartSec=5 adds a five-second delay before a restart in this example; adjust it to suit the setup and avoid rapid retry loops. Systemd restart attempts are subject to start-rate limits, so repeated failures can leave a unit stopped until you inspect its state and rate-limit settings.
Systemd reacts to process exits and configured timeouts; it does not inherently detect a stream that remains running but has stopped sending useful media. A successful service status alone therefore does not prove that the destination is receiving a healthy stream. FFmpeg’s protocol-specific recovery and systemd’s process restart policy address different failure modes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test recovery before relying on unattended streaming
-
Start the service and confirm that the destination is receiving media, not merely that the process is active.
-
Stop and start the service deliberately, then verify that it reconnects and media resumes at the destination.

Review
systemctl statusandjournalctl -u bhajan-stream.servicewhen it fails. Check for incorrect paths, permissions, unavailable input, invalid FFmpeg options, rejected credentials, incompatible output settings, or network problems. -
If systemd stops retrying after repeated failures, inspect the unit’s start-rate-limit state and settings rather than assuming the process recovered.
-
Test the specific failure you care about. Restarting FFmpeg tests process recovery; it does not demonstrate that a stalled-but-running connection will be detected or repaired.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately | Command, input path, permissions, unsupported options, or destination credentials | Run the exact command interactively as the service account and read the journal for the error. |
| Service is active but the destination has no media | Output protocol, destination endpoint, stream key, codec/container compatibility, or a stalled connection | Check FFmpeg logs and destination status. An active process is not proof of a working stream. |
| Service repeatedly restarts and then stops | Persistent FFmpeg error or systemd start-rate limiting | Inspect systemctl status and the journal, fix the underlying error, and review restart delay and rate-limit settings. |
| Network input disappears | Input protocol and its reconnection support | Use recovery options documented for that input protocol; HTTP input options do not apply to every network source. |
| RTMP output drops | Output-side recovery and destination behavior | Check the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation for its RTMP output recovery example and adapt only if it fits the installed build and setup. |
| It works in a terminal but not as a service | Different user, working directory, permissions, environment, or unsupported shell syntax | Make the service account and paths explicit; keep FFmpeg in the foreground and inspect the journal. |
