Set Windows active hours to cover your listening time, and schedule any required restart for later. This can reduce the chance that an update interrupts a bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani or other devotional stream, but it cannot keep playback running on the same PC while Windows restarts. For uninterrupted listening through a reboot, start playback independently on another supported device.
Prevent Windows from restarting during your listening hours
Windows sometimes needs to restart to finish installing updates. Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the PC, helping it avoid automatic restarts during that period. They do not prevent every update or keep a browser session alive through a reboot.
Windows 11: set active hours and schedule a restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Open Active hours and set the hours that cover your usual listening sessions. If Windows offers to schedule a restart for a pending update, choose a listening-free time.
- Check Settings > Windows Update for restart notices. Windows will try to restart when the device is not in use; if it cannot, it may ask you to choose a more convenient time. You can schedule a restart directly when that option is offered.
Windows 10: use the Windows Update controls available on your PC
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. If you still use Windows 10, check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update for any available restart and active-hours controls, but do not treat the end of support as a reason to leave the PC without security updates. Delay updates briefly when you need a listening window
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates and select an available end date. Microsoft says the current Windows 11 date picker allows a pause of up to 35 days from the current date. Updates resume automatically after the selected date unless you resume them sooner; Windows then checks for current updates. While updates are paused, updates that might require a restart are not downloaded or installed, and the device will not restart automatically to finish them until the pause ends. What happens if the PC restarts while YouTube is playing?
Playback on that PC stops when Windows restarts. Active hours, restart scheduling and a temporary pause can help you avoid an inconvenient restart, but none preserves the same Windows session during reboot. If the devotional stream must continue through the restart itself, start it on a separate supported device that can remain on. YouTube also suggests trying another supported device, Chromecast or an HDMI connection when troubleshooting computer playback; those options are not documented as a seamless handoff during an update restart. Check other causes of an unattended playback stop
YouTube’s “Continue watching?” prompt
Even without a Windows restart, YouTube may pause uninterrupted autoplay on the web after 60 minutes and display “Video paused. Continue watching?” You must select “Yes” to continue. This is separate from Windows Update, so active hours will not prevent it. See YouTube’s explanation of the prompt.

Screen-off and sleep timers
In Windows 11, screen and sleep settings are under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Adjusting these can help keep the PC awake during listening, but these power settings do not control update restarts. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance.
Windows 11 update restart changes are not universal
Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 article describes a staged Windows 11 rollout for versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1 that groups some restart-requiring driver, .NET and firmware updates with the monthly security update. Microsoft says the experience is rolling out gradually, may not be available on every device, and will not hold updates indefinitely. Some update categories may still install sooner, so do not rely on this rollout as a guarantee of just one restart per month. See Microsoft’s update grouping details.

Troubleshoot interruptions
- The PC restarted during a listening session: Check Settings > Windows Update for a pending restart, then set active hours to cover future listening sessions or schedule the restart for later.
- Windows still needs to restart soon: Schedule the restart for a suitable time if Windows offers that control. If a brief delay is necessary on Windows 11, pause updates and choose an end date, then let updates resume.
- The screen turns off or playback stops after inactivity: Check Windows 11’s screen and sleep timeouts. These settings affect power behavior, not update scheduling.
- Playback stops while the PC remains on: Check whether YouTube is waiting for a response to its “Continue watching?” prompt after 60 minutes of web autoplay.
- You need audio through the reboot: Start the stream on a second supported device before restarting. Do not expect playback on the rebooting PC to continue.
