YouTube Live H.264 Profile Settings: Baseline, Main, or High?

YouTube lists H.264 for live streaming but does not choose Baseline, Main, or High for you. Here are the settings it does specify and how to verify your workflow.

Short answer: YouTube’s live-streaming guidance lists H.264 as a supported codec but does not specify whether to use Baseline, Main, or High. Choose a profile supported by your encoder and the rest of your streaming workflow, then test a representative stream and check YouTube’s stream health. YouTube does not name an official H.264 profile preference for live ingest.

What YouTube specifies for live H.264

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance identifies H.264 as a video codec for RTMP/RTMPS streams. It specifies settings such as bitrate mode, keyframe frequency, and color space, but does not list Baseline, Main, or High as a preferred H.264 profile.

That distinction matters: a setting’s absence from YouTube’s guidance does not establish that one profile is better or more compatible in every encoder or delivery chain. YouTube says it will automatically detect the encoder settings you chose; that statement does not amount to a profile recommendation.

Use the live-stream settings YouTube does publish

For the settings it does document, YouTube’s guidance recommends the following. Match the bitrate to your resolution and frame rate rather than treating one figure as universal.

The H.264 bitrate examples in YouTube’s table are:

Do not confuse live H.264 with uploads or HDR

Prerecorded uploads

YouTube recommends H.264 High Profile on its upload encoding settings page. That recommendation concerns prerecorded uploads; it does not settle which H.264 profile to use for live ingest.

Live HDR

YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions describe an HEVC/H.265 workflow. In the OBS hardware-encoder instructions, YouTube says to select Main 10 (the default is Main) for HEVC. Main 10 is an HEVC profile, not an H.264 profile recommendation.

How to choose and verify a profile in your encoder

  1. Check the encoder’s current documentation. Confirm which H.264 profiles it supports and whether your chosen output path or receiving workflow specifies a compatibility requirement. YouTube’s cited live guidance does not provide a profile compatibility matrix.
  2. Set the documented live parameters. Configure CBR, the bitrate for your target resolution and frame rate, a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and the applicable advanced and SDR settings listed above.
  3. Choose a profile your encoder and workflow support. YouTube does not designate Baseline, Main, or High as its live preference. If you need a product-specific answer, follow the encoder or workflow maker’s current guidance rather than inferring one from YouTube’s upload or HDR pages.
  4. Test before the event. Start a representative test stream and inspect YouTube’s stream health. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event in its live encoder guidance.

Troubleshooting profile-related uncertainty

  • Your encoder offers several H.264 profiles, but YouTube does not say which to select: this is expected; the live settings page does not give a Baseline/Main/High preference. Check the encoder and delivery-chain documentation, then test.
  • A profile choice appears to coincide with stream-health problems: do not assume the profile is the cause. Check the complete stream configuration, including bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate, against YouTube’s published guidance, then test again.
  • You found a High Profile instruction for YouTube uploads: it applies to prerecorded uploads, not live H.264 ingest.
  • You found a Main 10 instruction for YouTube HDR: that instruction is for HEVC/H.265 in the HDR workflow, not H.264.
