For a mostly static Marathi devotional stream, start by testing 720p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 3 Mbps. If fine detail or movement benefits from more resolution and your upload connection is stable, test 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 5 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest video bitrates for those formats; 720p is a practical low-motion starting choice, not a special YouTube rule for devotional content.
What bitrate should I use for a 24/7 YouTube live stream?
Choose the live-ingest recommendation for your codec, resolution and frame rate—not YouTube’s separate upload-video encoding settings. For a fixed image, devotional artwork or a slowly changing visual, 30 fps is usually the more relevant starting point than 60 fps unless the picture includes fast movement. The right choice depends on visible detail, motion, the encoder’s load and how much upload capacity you can sustain continuously.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended and minimum ingest bitrates:
| Ingest format | AV1 / H.265 minimum | AV1 / H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are codec- and format-specific values, not a single bitrate for Marathi, devotional programming or round-the-clock streaming. YouTube lists the minimum as well as the recommended value; running at the minimum leaves less room for network or encoder variation. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the current table.

What bitrate for 720p or 1080p YouTube Live?
720p30: a sensible first test for a mostly static stream
For H.264, set video to 3 Mbps at 720p30. This is YouTube’s recommended value for that format. A devotional image or slowly moving background may not need 60 fps; choose it only if the motion makes the smoother presentation worthwhile and your connection and encoder can sustain the higher recommended bitrate of 8 Mbps for H.264 720p60.
1080p30: use when the image benefits from the added detail
For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30. Consider it when small text, fine artwork or other picture detail looks meaningfully better at 1080p, and the upload link is consistently capable. For 1080p60 H.264, the recommended value is 17 Mbps. Higher resolution is not automatically better for every viewer or every connection; test the actual visual and watch stream health.

Other codecs and lower resolutions
YouTube’s table also covers AV1 and H.265 (HEVC). Select the column matching the codec actually sent by your encoder; do not apply an H.264 number to a different codec. If your encoder or workflow does not support the alternative codec reliably, H.264 is a straightforward baseline. For 480p30 and 360p30, use the corresponding row in the table above rather than extrapolating from 720p.
Encoder settings to pair with your bitrate
A reliable baseline for the recommended 720p30 test is H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval, with AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Its guidance recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection into and through Google’s servers.

Keep audio bitrate separate from video bitrate when estimating network use. For example, a 3 Mbps video stream plus 128 kbps stereo audio requires more than 3 Mbps of upload capacity even before protocol overhead. Actual network use can vary with encoder behavior. YouTube’s published values concern incoming live ingest; YouTube automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes live video into multiple output formats, so the incoming bitrate does not guarantee that every viewer receives that exact playback bitrate. Full guidance is in YouTube Help.
How much upload speed do I need for YouTube Live?
Measure sustained upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. As a planning calculation, divide the total bitrate you intend to send by 0.8 to estimate the minimum measured upload capacity before adding any separate backup feed. A 3 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio is already about 3.13 Mbps before overhead, so the connection needs more capacity than that; the connection’s stability matters as much as the headline speed-test result.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you send both primary and backup feeds, budget for both streams plus the headroom. YouTube advises running an upload speed test and choosing a quality the connection can sustain. It warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. A wired connection and monitoring are practical ways to reduce avoidable interruptions, not guarantees of uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
How to test before leaving a stream unattended
- Set the format: choose the resolution, frame rate and codec, then use the corresponding YouTube live-ingest bitrate. For the low-motion H.264 baseline, that is 720p30 at 3 Mbps.
- Configure the encoder: use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, RTMPS, and the audio settings appropriate to your mix.
- Check the connection: run an upload speed test and confirm that sustained capacity covers video, audio, protocol overhead and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Include a backup feed in the calculation if you use one.
- Run a representative test: include the actual audio and similar visual movement, rather than testing with a silent still image if the real stream has music or animation. YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Watch Live Control Room: check stream health and look for encoder or connectivity faults during the test. YouTube’s instructions for encoder-based broadcasts are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Repeat after meaningful changes: test again if you change resolution, frame rate, codec, network or backup-feed setup. A 24/7 schedule does not create a different YouTube bitrate recommendation.
Stream key and live-stream considerations
Your stream key lets an encoder send video to the correct live stream; treat it like a password. Do not share it publicly or put it where viewers can see it. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers managing stream settings. For a 24/7 devotional channel, make sure you have the rights to the music, recordings, images and other material you broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content policies. A continuous schedule does not itself establish permission to use content or guarantee monetization.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream-health problems
- Stream health reports network instability: lower the selected resolution or bitrate to a format the upload connection can sustain, test the wired connection, and re-check upload capacity with headroom. A speed test’s download result does not answer this question.
- Video looks blocky or loses detail: verify that the encoder is actually sending the selected resolution and codec, then compare against the recommended bitrate for that exact format. Do not exceed what the upload link can sustain to chase sharper video.
- Encoder reports dropped frames or overload: check that the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec are within the encoder and computer’s capability. Test a lower-load format and monitor the full representative stream.
- Audio is absent or poor: confirm the selected audio input and AAC/MP3 encoder settings; verify the sample rate and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations for stereo or 5.1.
- Stream stops after a connection fault: investigate the network interruption and encoder status, then reconnect using the stream configuration. YouTube notes that connectivity disruption can break a stream; do not assume the bitrate alone caused or will prevent it.
