You can broadcast a radio-style YouTube Live stream from Ubuntu Server by pairing your audio with a still image or looping visual, encoding both for YouTube, and sending the output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your files, Ubuntu release, and FFmpeg build, so verify those before starting rather than relying on a universal one-line command.
Before you start
Prepare four things: a YouTube channel allowed to stream live, an Ubuntu Server host with a suitable FFmpeg build, audio you have the rights to broadcast, and a visual source. In the usual YouTube Live encoder workflow, audio alone is not enough: provide a still image, a looped video, or another valid video source alongside the audio.
- Channel access: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming enablement guidance.
- Server and media: Identify the Ubuntu release, audio format, visual source, and whether the server has enough CPU or supported hardware encoding capacity.
- Network: Ensure sustained upload capacity above the stream’s selected bitrate, leaving headroom for connection variation and other traffic.
- Rights: Use audio and visuals cleared for the intended public livestream, including any relevant music licensing.
Enable live streaming and get the YouTube ingest details
- Sign in to YouTube Studio with an account that has permission to create and manage streams for the channel.
- Open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room, then create or select the broadcast.
- Copy the server URL and stream key YouTube displays. The URL depends on the selected protocol and configuration.
- Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when it is available for the stream and supported by your FFmpeg build; RTMPS encrypts transport, unlike plain RTMP.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a command copied into a public repository, paste it into a public article, or leave it exposed in shared logs or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in your server configuration. YouTube describes stream-key management in its stream settings help.
Check FFmpeg on the actual Ubuntu host
Ubuntu release and package source affect available FFmpeg versions and features. Do not assume a command or codec available on one server exists on another. Check the installed build first:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
Confirm that the build has the required input support, video and audio encoders, and RTMP or RTMPS protocol support. The Ubuntu package documentation available for Bionic is not a current package catalogue for every Ubuntu release; use documentation appropriate to the release you run. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP-related options and examples.
Install FFmpeg from an appropriate trusted source for your Ubuntu release if it is missing, then repeat the checks. The right installation method and package version depend on that release and the build you need; there is no single package-version instruction that applies to every Ubuntu Server installation.
Choose the visual and input strategy
One audio file with a still image
This is the simplest radio-style setup when you want a static cover image or station graphic. You need an audio input and a valid image input, with the image kept available for the duration of the broadcast. Confirm the chosen FFmpeg build can read both formats and produce a continuous video-and-audio output.

Audio with a looping visual
A short video loop can provide motion while the audio continues. Decide deliberately how the visual repeats and how the audio behaves at file boundaries; mismatched durations can cause the stream to end, freeze, or lose synchronization if the inputs are not configured for the intended run.
Playlist or live capture
For a playlist, specify how tracks advance, what happens at the end of the list, and whether transitions are required. Input devices add hardware and driver dependencies that vary by server. FFmpeg options and filters must be selected for the actual source; test representative media rather than assuming all formats behave alike.
Set encoder output for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the resolution, codec, and frame rate you choose. For a conventional SDR starting point, use H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends that keyframes not exceed four seconds, supports up to 60 fps, and gives advanced audio recommendations of 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio.

Choose the video bitrate from YouTube’s table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single correct bitrate for all outputs. The settings are technical recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted delivery. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Leave upload headroom beyond the selected stream bitrate and check that the server’s encoding capacity is adequate.
Build and test the FFmpeg publish command
Assemble the command for your specific media and FFmpeg version from these parts:
- Inputs: Add the audio source and a still, looped visual, or other valid video input.
- File pacing: For file-based inputs, use real-time pacing where appropriate so FFmpeg does not send the media as fast as it can read it. FFmpeg documents
-reas an input option useful for simulating a live input from a file. - Output mapping and encoding: Map the intended audio and video, then set the chosen codecs, dimensions, frame rate, CBR behavior, keyframe interval, and audio settings.
- Destination: Send the encoded output in an RTMP-compatible format such as FLV to the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Keep the secret out of any command or log that others can read.
FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation includes publishing examples using FLV output, but input looping, synchronization, filter graphs, encoders, and exact URL syntax depend on the inputs and build. Validate a command on your target host and representative files; do not assume an example written for a different Ubuntu release or media set will run unchanged.

Run a private test and verify stream health
- Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast where appropriate.
- Check Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube receives the stream and reports the expected picture dimensions, motion, and audio.
- Listen to the audio and inspect the image for clipping, silence, unintended borders, or unexpected freezes.
- Review Live Control Room stream-health messages and watch for network or encoding warnings.
- Test with audio and visual motion representative of the real broadcast, then monitor the stream during operation.
Lower latency can increase playback buffering. If the radio stream does not depend on real-time interaction, favor stable delivery over the lowest possible latency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep a long-running server stream maintainable
For an always-on broadcast, run FFmpeg in a service-management setup appropriate to your server, but build that setup around your own account, media paths, secret storage, playlist behavior, and restart policy. A service file that is safe and correct for one installation may fail or expose secrets on another; test it rather than adopting an unverified template.
- Keep media and configuration paths accessible to the service account.
- Store the stream key with access restricted to the account and administrators who need it.
- Configure logs so failures can be diagnosed without allowing log files to grow without bound.
- Test what happens when FFmpeg exits, the network drops, media ends, or the server reboots.
- After a reboot test, confirm that the service starts and the inputs remain available.
A service manager can help restart a process, but it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room after recovery and confirm that the stream is back in a healthy state.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect server URL or key, stream not enabled, unsupported protocol, or missing protocol support in the FFmpeg build | Recheck the current URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm channel eligibility, and inspect ffmpeg -version and protocol support. |
| Audio plays locally but YouTube shows no sound | Audio not mapped to output, incompatible encoding settings, or an input that ends unexpectedly | Inspect the FFmpeg output mapping and encoder settings, and test the actual file through the full publish path. |
| Picture is black, frozen, or absent | No valid video input, image or loop ends, unsupported input format, or incorrect mapping | Confirm the visual source is present and sustained, check input decoding and output mapping, and test a representative visual. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or connection | Chosen bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, competing network traffic, or encoding/network instability | Run an upload speed test, reduce output demands using YouTube’s settings for the chosen resolution and codec, and leave network headroom. |
| Stream stops when a file ends | The input or playlist was not configured to continue as intended | Test end-of-file and playlist behavior with the actual inputs, and set a deliberate loop or track-advance strategy. |
| Stream is interrupted after a copyright warning | Third-party content match or rights holder restrictions, including a missing Content ID allowlist entry | Review the warning and rights status; use content cleared for the livestream and have the rights holder address allowlisting where applicable. |
| Stream key no longer works | Key was reset, copied incorrectly, or exposed and replaced | Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the protected server configuration. |
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
YouTube’s Live Content terms put responsibility for necessary rights on the person providing the stream, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Owning a recording or having a personal-use music subscription does not, by itself, establish permission to broadcast it publicly.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It can warn, replace the live image, interrupt, or terminate a stream if matched content remains. YouTube also says that even licensed content may be interrupted unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist; see its copyright guidance for live streams.
