How to Use VLC to Send an Internet Radio Feed to YouTube Live

VLC can play an internet radio feed, but a separate YouTube-compatible encoder is needed to send it as a livestream. Here’s how to set up the audio, picture, stream key and encoder settings.

You can use VLC to play an internet radio feed, but the documented workflow is not to paste a YouTube stream key into VLC and publish directly. Instead, use VLC as the player, then route its audio to a YouTube-compatible encoder that adds a picture and sends the stream to YouTube. The exact audio-routing steps depend on your operating system, VLC version and encoder.

Before you start: check access and permission

Confirm your channel can livestream

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the channel’s status before preparing the broadcast; otherwise, you may be unable to start the event.

Get permission to rebroadcast the station

A public listen link is not permission to rebroadcast. Check the station’s terms and obtain the rights needed for the music and other content in the feed, for the territories where viewers may watch and for any replay YouTube saves. YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to have the necessary rights for exploitation of the live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and issue a warning; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist even when you have a licence, and a claim on an archived stream may arrive after the broadcast ends. A publicly accessible or unlisted station feed is not automatically cleared for streaming.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the setup does—and what VLC does not establish

The practical chain is station feed → VLC playback → audio capture or routing → encoder with a picture → YouTube Live. VLC opens and plays the station’s network audio. A separate encoder must send the event to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room.

VideoLAN’s published streaming-features list documents output methods such as HTTP and RTP/UDP, but does not list RTMP or RTMPS. That page does not establish a current, version-specific procedure for publishing directly from VLC to YouTube. Treat VLC as the player in this workflow, not as a verified direct YouTube publisher. Do not paste your YouTube key into VLC expecting it to work.

You will need a station feed URL VLC can open, an encoder that supports YouTube’s ingestion settings and can receive audio played by VLC on your operating system, and a video picture. A station webpage may contain a player without exposing a direct media-feed URL. The exact method for capturing VLC audio varies by platform and software, so choose an encoder and audio-routing method documented for your particular system rather than relying on a universal menu path.

Set up the radio stream

  1. Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings; do not share the key, since it directs the encoder to your stream and enables YouTube to accept its feed.
  2. Open the station’s audio feed in VLC. Use the station’s actual network audio URL, if it provides one, and confirm that VLC plays the expected station continuously. A website address is not necessarily the feed address. If VLC cannot open the URL, find the station’s supported direct listening stream or contact the station; do not assume that the website player URL will work as network media.
  3. Route VLC’s sound to the encoder. Configure an audio input the encoder can receive—such as the appropriate system-audio capture or virtual audio device for your operating system—and select that input in the encoder. The available sources do not verify a specific capture device, menu label or click-by-click route for any platform or release. Before proceeding, confirm the encoder’s audio meter responds while VLC plays.
  4. Add a picture to the encoder’s video input. YouTube’s encoder workflow expects a video feed as well as audio. For an audio-led broadcast, use a still image or another visual in an encoder that supports it. Make sure the preview shows the intended picture and that the station audio is audible; do not assume that VLC’s audio alone creates a complete video stream.
  5. Set the encoder’s YouTube destination and output. Use the event’s server URL and key, and choose a YouTube-supported protocol, preferably RTMPS. Apply the audio and video guidance below in the encoder—not in VLC. Start the encoder feed and check that YouTube receives it in the Live Control Room.
  6. Test before going public. Check that the station audio is continuous, the picture is present and the encoder preview is clean. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended event, reviewing stream-health messages and monitoring quality. When the event is ready, use the Live Control Room’s available start/go-live control if the event requires it.
  7. End the event cleanly. Stop the encoder feed when the broadcast is over. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; an archive can still receive a later copyright claim.

YouTube encoder settings for a simple radio broadcast

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not VLC-specific settings. Apply them in the encoder that sends the stream. For a static image, there is no need to pursue a high video resolution merely because the audio is radio.

Setting Guidance Why it matters
Ingestion protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. The encoder needs to send to YouTube’s ingestion service using the event’s server URL and key.
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Choose a codec supported by both the encoder and YouTube’s current ingestion guidance.
Frame rate YouTube supports up to 60 fps. A still image does not require 60 fps; use a sensible output for the picture and encoder.
Keyframe interval Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Set this in the encoder’s video output options.
Audio codec AAC or MP3. Make sure the encoder is encoding the captured VLC audio rather than an inactive input.
Stereo audio Recommended sample rate: 44.1 kHz; recommended bitrate: 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s stereo audio recommendations.
Rate control CBR. YouTube lists constant bitrate as its recommended rate-control mode.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • VLC does not play the station. The address may be a webpage rather than the direct audio feed, or the feed may not be compatible with your VLC version. Locate a stream URL the installed player can open and verify playback before configuring the encoder.
  • The encoder shows no audio. It may be listening to the wrong input or may not receive VLC’s audio on your system. Check that VLC is playing, select the intended system-audio capture or virtual device in the encoder, and confirm its meter moves before sending the stream.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream. Check that the encoder is using the server URL and stream key for the correct event and that its protocol and codecs follow YouTube’s ingestion guidance. A wrong or outdated key or URL can prevent YouTube from accepting the feed.
  • The event is not visible to viewers. The encoder may be sending a preview while the event still needs a separate start/go-live action in the Live Control Room. Check the event’s status and follow the on-screen controls for that event.
  • Stream health reports problems. Review YouTube’s health messages and the encoder output. Upload capacity, an unstable connection or incompatible output settings can affect delivery; test and monitor the actual stream rather than assuming local playback guarantees a healthy broadcast.
  • The livestream is interrupted or replaced. YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review the warning and resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting issues with the relevant rights holder; changing the feed to unlisted does not establish permission.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is not a relay for a live internet radio feed: it loops videos you upload, rather than capturing a station playing live in VLC. If your goal is instead to keep a recorded radio programme with a visual running as a YouTube livestream, you can upload that recording, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
