For a playlist of locally stored Indian music files in OBS Studio, use VLC Video Source: it supports multiple media items, with options to loop or shuffle the playlist. Use OBS’s built-in Media Source for a single file. VLC Video Source requires VLC installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Neither source gives you permission to stream the music.
Which OBS source should you choose?

OBS documents VLC Video Source as the playlist-capable option. Its settings also include visibility behavior, network caching, audio-track selection and subtitle controls. The documented network-caching default is 400 ms, and the documented playlist defaults are loop on and shuffle off; these are defaults, not universal performance recommendations. An OBS media playlist is not the same thing as a playlist hosted on YouTube. The documented workflow is to add media files; the source documentation does not establish that an ordinary YouTube playlist URL can be imported as a local playlist.
Set up an Indian music playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC Video Source will not appear unless VLC is installed. Match architectures: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene that will appear on stream, add a VLC Video Source and populate its playlist with local files you are entitled to broadcast. For one file only, add a Media Source instead.
- Choose playlist behavior. Decide whether to loop or shuffle. Check what happens when the source becomes visible or hidden, select the intended audio track, and confirm audio levels. If the files include visuals, check that their framing fits the scene.
- Configure YouTube streaming. In YouTube Studio, enable streaming and configure an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions for the stream key and live setup, since interface steps can change. Do not share the stream key; treat it like a password.
- Preview before going live. Check that the encoder feed reaches YouTube, the correct audio and visuals are present, and stream health is acceptable before starting the public broadcast.
- Clear rights before transmission. Confirm permissions for the exact compositions and recordings, the territories where the stream will be available, and both live and archived use. Keep the relevant licenses or permissions and ask rights holders whether they need to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist.
YouTube’s current general live-stream guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Mobile-specific requirements are not the basis for this computer-and-encoder workflow. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before scheduling a broadcast.

Clear music rights before going live
Choosing a source only determines how OBS plays files. It does not grant the right to broadcast the composition or recording. YouTube says it scans all live streams for third-party content. When it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. YouTube advises creators with licensed material to ask the owner to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms say that the provider represents it has the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants, and has met applicable requirements in the stream territory. That is a platform term, not a determination of which Indian laws, licenses, collecting-society permissions or exceptions apply to a particular song or use. For an India-based channel, get qualified advice for the specific repertoire, territories, monetization and archive plans rather than assuming one blanket rule covers every case.

Check the exact license, not just the label
- Confirm permission for the particular recording as well as the underlying composition.
- Check that the license covers livestreaming, the intended territories, monetization and any archived replay.
- Ask whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID, and complete that step before streaming.
- Do not treat “free” or “royalty-free” as proof that a track is cleared for your live and archived use. YouTube’s music-safety guidance recommends public-domain music, music used with permission, its Audio Library, original music or carefully checked third-party licenses; a “free” label does not stop a Content ID claim.
Do not rely on Creator Music for a livestream
YouTube’s current Creator Music usage guidance says its licensed or revenue-sharing tracks cannot be used in livestreams. It also describes Creator Music as available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. It is therefore not a documented solution for an India-based music livestream.
Troubleshoot the source and stream
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist does not advance or repeat as expected: Recheck that the items are loaded in VLC Video Source and review loop, shuffle and visibility behavior. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as defaults, but the source may have been configured differently.
- The video appears but the sound is absent or wrong: Check the source’s audio-track selection and OBS audio levels, then confirm the intended audio is present in the YouTube encoder preview.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: Treat this as a possible third-party-content match. Stop and investigate the specific recording; verify the license and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume that restarting the same playlist resolves a rights issue.
- YouTube will not accept the stream: Check channel verification and current live-stream eligibility, then revisit YouTube Studio’s encoder instructions and stream key. The interface can change, so use current YouTube Help rather than relying on an older setup walkthrough.
These are documented source settings and platform guidance, not claims from a live test of a particular OBS, VLC or YouTube configuration.
