OBS documents playlist playback, but not automatic insertion of a separate slate after every playlist item—so plan the sequence explicitly and test it before going live.
Choose how the countdown will appear

There are two reliable ways to schedule the slate: make it part of the ordered playback sequence, or switch to its scene at each video boundary. An OBS VLC Video playlist can centralize ordered video playback, but OBS’s guide does not say it automatically inserts a separate slate after each playlist item.
Set up OBS and VLC
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so their architectures match. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Create a VOD scene. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and load your gaming VOD files in the order you want them played. Check the source’s loop and shuffle controls: enable or disable them to match the intended show.
- Create a slate scene. Add a Media Source for an animated countdown video, an Image source for a static slate, or a Text source for editable wording. OBS scenes can combine these source types; see its Sources Guide.
- Set the countdown to restart. For a countdown video, check the Media Source playback settings and enable restart when the source becomes active if that matches your transition plan. Rehearse the behavior in your actual scene setup.
Put the slate between VODs
Option 1: Include the slate in an explicit sequence
Arrange the show as VOD 1, countdown, VOD 2, countdown, and so on. Use playback sources and scene changes as needed to make each transition explicit. This makes the intended order clear, but confirm that the sources advance and restart as expected in your setup.
Option 2: Switch scenes at each video boundary
Keep the VOD playback in one scene and the countdown in another. Switch to the slate scene when a VOD ends, then return to the VOD scene when the break ends. OBS covers hotkeys in its Sources Guide; assigning them can make manual switching practical. The switch still needs to be triggered—you should not assume a VLC playlist will automatically activate a separate slate scene after each entry.

For either approach, run the complete sequence before broadcasting. Check the order, countdown start point, transitions, and audio, including what viewers see and hear during the break.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software as well as hardware encoders. OBS is a software encoder, so dedicated encoder hardware is not a basic requirement for this setup. Follow YouTube’s current Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder flow to configure the stream and connect OBS. YouTube describes encoder use for gameplay broadcasts and more advanced productions.

Check the stream before it is public
- Verify that every VOD and countdown file loads and plays in the planned order.
- Confirm the countdown begins at the intended point when its source or scene becomes active.
- Listen for missing, doubled, or unexpectedly continuous audio during scene changes and slate playback.
- Check loop and shuffle settings so the VOD playlist behaves as intended after its last item.
- Rehearse the full sequence privately or otherwise non-publicly before relying on it in a live broadcast.
Common problems and fixes
