Keep OBS streaming and switch the active scene in OBS; do not stop the encoder or end the YouTube stream. A scene change alters the picture the running encoder sends, while the encoder’s stream URL and key connect that feed to the YouTube event. This is the practical workflow implied by YouTube’s encoder model, so rehearse it with your church’s actual setup before a service.
Change OBS scenes without ending the YouTube stream
- Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, select or create the intended live stream and get its stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it private. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection.
- Connect OBS to that event. Configure OBS with the event’s stream URL and key, then start streaming. Allow time for the connection and YouTube preview to appear.
- Check the preview before the service. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the expected picture and sound. Make sure the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages, including on a phone.
- Keep OBS’s streaming session running. During the service, use OBS’s scene controls to switch among prepared camera, lyrics, welcome, and holding scenes. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube merely to change what viewers see.
- End the broadcast after the service. Use the end-stream procedure for your setup, then stop sending the encoder feed. Button sequences can vary, so confirm them in rehearsal. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guide covers ending a stream.
YouTube’s documentation describes the encoder feed and its URL/key connection; it does not document OBS scene controls directly. The instruction to change scenes while leaving the encoder session active is operational guidance based on that connection model, not a guarantee for every OBS configuration. Rehearse before relying on it during a service.
Rehearse scene changes and monitor the actual stream
Practice with the church’s real cameras, audio sources, graphics, OBS scenes, network, and YouTube event. Have one person operate OBS and another watch the YouTube preview or player. Check that each scene displays the intended image and that sound continues across transitions. YouTube recommends monitoring accessibility and audio/video quality throughout the stream.
- Test camera, lyrics, welcome, and holding scenes individually, including the transitions between them.
- Check the YouTube preview and player, not only the OBS program view; the audience receives the encoder feed.
- Confirm the stream is accessible from the channel and watch pages and check mobile access.
- Watch audio and video continuously during the service, and check that any local archive recording is growing as expected.
Set up timing and upload bandwidth
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that time to confirm the connection, check the preview, and resolve problems before the congregation expects the stream.

YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% additional bandwidth as headroom. Connectivity disruptions can interrupt a stream. If you configure a backup encoder, account for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate and 20% headroom; a backup path is not automatic unless it has been configured and tested. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing backup failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube preview never appears or OBS cannot start
Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key for the selected event. For a third-party encoder start error, YouTube recommends copying the stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder.

The video freezes or viewers lose the stream
Check the church’s outbound connection and available upload bandwidth. Compare the total stream bitrate with available capacity, preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If the setup has a configured backup encoder, test the failover path rather than assuming the player will switch automatically.
A scene change shows black video or loses sound
Test each scene and source in advance, then monitor the YouTube preview or player during transitions. If the problem appears there, inspect the affected scene and its sources in OBS and verify that the expected picture and audio return before continuing. YouTube’s guidance supports testing and monitoring; it does not identify a particular OBS source failure or promise an automatic fix.

The stream ends when someone stops OBS
Stopping OBS’s streaming session stops the encoder from sending its feed. If the goal is only to change the camera, lyrics, or graphic, leave that session running and switch scenes instead. Rehearse the end-of-service sequence so the operator knows when to stop the encoder.

For a church that wants a prerecorded programme or playlist to run continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, so it is not a replacement for switching OBS camera scenes during a service.
