Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a low-CPU YouTube stream in OBS, first try a compatible hardware encoder—NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync—because it shifts encoding work away from the CPU. If you must use x264, start with a faster preset such as veryfast; move to ultrafast if CPU load is still too high, accepting a possible loss in compression quality at the same bitrate. For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and test your actual content before relying on a continuous stream.
Choose an encoder before choosing an x264 preset
The x264 preset setting applies only when OBS is using the x264 software encoder. If CPU usage is the problem and your system offers a compatible hardware encoder, test that option first.
Hardware encoding: NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync
OBS describes hardware encoding as moving the encoding workload from the CPU to dedicated hardware. Choose the encoder your installed hardware and OBS setup support: NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync. OBS notes that users with NVIDIA or AMD GPUs generally use NVENC or AMF rather than Quick Sync. The available choices and their capability depend on the hardware, operating system, drivers, and OBS build, so check the encoder menu on your own system.
Hardware encoding is a way to reduce CPU demand, not a guarantee that every machine or encoder generation will deliver the same image quality or sustain every workload. Compare it with x264 using your own stream content and target settings.

x264: trade CPU time for compression efficiency
x264 presets range from ultrafast through progressively slower options to placebo. Faster presets use less CPU; slower presets spend more processing time and can improve compression quality at the same bitrate. Start with the fastest preset that still gives acceptable image quality. OBS uses veryfast as an example in its recording guide, but that example is not a universal live-stream prescription.
- Try
veryfastas a practical starting point if x264 is required and the system has enough CPU headroom. - Try
ultrafastif CPU load remains a bottleneck. Expect a possible compression-quality tradeoff at the same bitrate. - Do not assume a slower preset is better for a 24/7 stream. If it overloads the CPU, the resulting instability outweighs a potential compression gain.
The right choice depends on your hardware, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, and available bitrate. There is no single preset guaranteed to work for every always-on stream.

Set YouTube-compatible output settings
Encoder choice and preset do not replace YouTube’s ingest requirements. YouTube’s live guidance specifies CBR and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its supported RTMP/RTMPS video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the requirements and bitrate appropriate to your codec and target.
Use a bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate
Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. In YouTube’s current table, H.264 is listed at 6 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Those figures apply to those specific H.264 targets; do not carry them over to another resolution, frame rate, or codec. Select the output you actually need, then consult the matching row in YouTube’s table.

Keep the stream key private
In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key. YouTube’s stream setup and encoder guidance is available in its live streaming help.
Configure and validate OBS for a continuous stream
OBS labels and menu placement can vary by version, operating system, and selected encoder. In the output settings, choose the encoder you intend to use, then set its preset if applicable. For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, verify CBR, set a 2-second keyframe interval, and use a codec- and target-appropriate bitrate. Configure audio to meet the current YouTube requirements as well.

- Choose the stream output. Set resolution and frame rate for the content and system you have, rather than selecting a target solely because it is higher.
- Select the encoder. Test a supported hardware encoder first if CPU headroom is limited. If using x264, begin with
veryfastand use a faster preset if necessary. - Set YouTube’s ingest parameters. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Choose bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and the amount of motion expected in the real stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing with similar audio and movement before going live.
- Monitor stream health. Watch OBS performance and YouTube’s stream health messages. Check that the system remains stable under the actual workload before leaving it unattended.
A successful short test is useful, but it does not establish that a particular setup will run indefinitely. Cooling, scene complexity, hardware, and network capacity all matter during a 24/7 workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot high CPU load and unstable output
- CPU usage stays high with x264: switch to a faster preset, such as
ultrafast, or test an available compatible hardware encoder. If using hardware encoding, make sure OBS is selecting the encoder supported by your installed hardware. - The stream looks poor after moving to a faster x264 preset: faster presets can reduce compression efficiency at the same bitrate. Check that bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec and output target; if the image still does not meet your needs, test a hardware encoder or a different output target your system and connection can sustain.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue: verify CBR, the 2-second keyframe interval (and no more than 4 seconds), the selected codec, and the codec-specific bitrate. Check YouTube’s current guidance because platform requirements and tables can change.
- OBS does not show the encoder you expect: confirm that the GPU or integrated graphics supports it, and check the operating system, drivers, and OBS build. The general encoder categories OBS documents do not establish compatibility for every specific machine.
- The stream works briefly but fails during longer use: repeat the test with representative motion and audio, monitor OBS and YouTube health indicators, and investigate sustained CPU/GPU load, cooling, and network stability. No preset alone guarantees a 24/7 run.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS and a home computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera and supports YouTube only.
