OBS’s Automatic Reconnect can recover a dropped connection, but it cannot relaunch OBS after the application itself crashes. For a more resilient 24/7 YouTube education stream, combine a separately configured and tested backup encoder with a way to restart OBS, and keep a local recording if the program must be preserved.
How do I keep my 24/7 YouTube stream running if OBS crashes?
Use separate safeguards for separate failures. A backup encoder gives YouTube another feed if the primary encoder stops; an external supervisor can relaunch OBS after a process crash. Neither safeguard should be assumed to work until you test it with the actual stream configuration.
- Configure the YouTube stream and protect its key. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed. You can reuse a custom key and configure auto-start and auto-stop in stream settings. Restrict access to the key because anyone with it may be able to send video to the ingest. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Set up a distinct backup encoder. Configure a second encoder or source for the same YouTube stream. YouTube’s guidance supports this as a way to maintain playback when the primary encoder stops. The backup must be configured for your stream; merely owning another computer or encoder does not provide failover.
- Test the viewer-side handoff. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Perform this in an unlisted or otherwise controlled stream before depending on it for a public, unattended broadcast. Follow YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Make room for both feeds on the network. YouTube recommends upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with 20% additional headroom. If both encoders are expected to send simultaneously during failover, include both in the bandwidth calculation. A connection disruption can still interrupt delivery if the available upload capacity is insufficient.
- Add a separate OBS restart path. OBS documents the launch parameter
--startstreaming, which starts streaming when OBS launches. Pair it with an external process monitor, scheduled task, or system service configured to relaunch OBS after it exits. This is a practical use of OBS’s launch option, not a documented OBS feature that automatically restarts the application after a crash. - Test the complete recovery chain. In a controlled stream, simulate a connection failure and an OBS process exit separately. Verify that the backup feed reaches the player, and that the external supervisor actually relaunches OBS and starts streaming. OBS’s launch guidance says automated launches should set the working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. Consult OBS launch parameters and adapt the supervisor to your operating system. - Record locally if the lessons must be retained. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For an around-the-clock program, do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the sole copy; keep a local recording if preservation matters. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Automatic Reconnect vs. restarting OBS
These address different failure modes. OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting is for a lost connection while OBS remains running. If the OBS process closes or crashes, there is no running application to reconnect; the restart must come from an external supervisor or an operator. The --startstreaming parameter can start a stream when OBS is launched, but does not itself watch for crashes or relaunch the program. See OBS’s overview and its launch-parameter documentation.
Choosing a backup approach for an education stream
The right fallback depends on whether the program is live-produced or consists of prerecorded lessons, and on whether you need to recover the OBS process itself or only keep video reaching YouTube.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Live-produced lessons: A separately configured backup encoder is YouTube’s documented failover approach. Confirm that the backup can send the intended feed and test the player handoff.
- Prerecorded lessons or playlists: YouTube’s encoder guide describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 YouTube streams of prerecorded videos. That is an alternate production workflow, not documented OBS-crash takeover. Check the provider’s current features and availability before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder guide.
- Hardware encoder: A hardware live-streaming encoder is one possible backup source. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but hardware alone does not configure or test failover. Before buying a model, verify its ingest protocol, stream-key handling, output resolution and bitrate, unattended restart behavior, and compatibility with your planned YouTube failover arrangement with the manufacturer.
Troubleshooting recovery failures
- OBS reconnects, but the stream still ends: Automatic Reconnect addresses connection loss, not a crashed OBS process. Add and test an external restart supervisor.
- The backup encoder is running, but viewers do not see it: Recheck the YouTube backup configuration and perform the prescribed test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet. Confirm the rollover in the player, not just in the encoder interface.
- The primary and backup feeds both become unstable: Check available upload capacity against the combined primary and backup bitrates, then add YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- OBS restarts but does not begin streaming: Confirm the launch uses
--startstreaming, that the correct OBS installation is invoked, and that automated launches use the directory containingobs64.exe. Test the full launch under the same account and conditions as the supervisor. - A long stream is missing from the archive: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a local recording when the complete program matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
