FFmpeg YouTube Live Settings for a 720p Pre-Recorded Playlist

Use YouTube’s 720p H.264 recommendations to configure FFmpeg, loop a single file, and test a pre-recorded live stream before relying on it.

For a 720p H.264 YouTube Live stream, start with 8 Mbps video bitrate, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a keyframe every two seconds. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60; the recommended value is 8 Mbps for either frame rate. For a single video file, FFmpeg can pace playback with -re and repeat it with -stream_loop -1. A playlist of multiple files needs a media-compatible input setup and its own end-to-end test.

Recommended settings for 720p

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60, with 3 Mbps listed as the minimum. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees that your source, encoder, or internet connection can sustain a stable stream. Allow upload headroom and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Setting Starting value or choice
Resolution 1280×720; confirm the input is already 720p or scale it deliberately.
Frame rate Match the source where possible. Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the source and desired motion smoothness.
H.264 video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum for both 720p30 and 720p60, according to YouTube.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate).
Keyframes One every two seconds. At 30 fps, use a GOP of about 60 frames; adjust the frame count for other constant frame rates.
Audio AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz. Confirm the input actually contains audio.
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS is supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
SDR video characteristics YouTube lists Rec. 709, square pixels, progressive scan, and 8-bit depth among its advanced settings.

YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. This example uses H.264 as a broadly documented baseline. Confirm that your encoder and chosen ingest path support any different codec before relying on it.

Loop one video file with FFmpeg

This is an illustrative starting command for a file that contains both video and audio. Replace input.mp4 and the RTMPS destination with your own values. The ingest address and stream name/key are supplied through YouTube Studio; keep the key private and out of public scripts or logs.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_NAME"

FFmpeg’s -re reads the input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful when output packet timing matters, as it does for live streaming. -stream_loop -1 repeats that input indefinitely. Both are input options, so they appear before -i. See FFmpeg documentation.

Adjust the command to the source

  • Frame rate and GOP: The example sets 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP, or about two seconds. If your source uses another constant frame rate, choose an appropriate output rate and set the GOP to about twice that rate. Avoid changing the frame rate without a reason.
  • Resolution: The command does not force 1280×720. Start with a 720p input, or add a scale filter only after checking aspect ratio and deciding whether cropping is intended.
  • Audio: The example assumes an audio stream exists. If the file has no audio, map or generate audio as appropriate rather than assuming FFmpeg will provide it.
  • Bitrate: The 8 Mbps video setting is YouTube’s recommended H.264 value for 720p30 and 720p60. It does not include the separate audio bitrate or account for network overhead.
  • Destination: YouTube provides an ingestion address and stream name/key. FFmpeg accepts the destination in the form shown in the example; YouTube’s API documentation describes the ingest address and stream name as separate values. See YouTube LiveStreams resource.

Send a multi-file playlist

The command above loops one file; it is not a universal playlist command. Distinct files commonly require a concat input list when their media are compatible, or another playlist/playout approach when formats or requirements differ. Playlist construction affects compatibility, transitions, and audio continuity. Do not assume an arbitrary list will loop seamlessly just because -stream_loop -1 appears in the command. Build and test the exact list, including its joins and return to the beginning, before scheduling a long broadcast. The official documentation cited here does not establish one universal FFmpeg command for mixed-format playlists or guarantee seamless joins.

Connect FFmpeg to the correct YouTube live event

YouTube treats the watchable broadcast and the encoder’s stream as distinct resources. A stream contains transmission settings and can be reused for broadcasts scheduled at different times; sending data to the ingest does not by itself establish that the intended broadcast is in the scheduled or live state. Check both the encoder output and the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio. See YouTube LiveBroadcasts resource and the LiveStreams resource.

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the broadcast you intend viewers to watch, then open its stream settings.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key/name from YouTube’s live setup into the FFmpeg destination. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in logs that others can access.
  3. Start FFmpeg and confirm that YouTube receives the feed in the intended broadcast’s preview. Check the stream’s resolution, frame rate, audio, and health messages before making the event public or relying on it for an extended run.

Test and monitor before relying on the playlist

YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use a private or unlisted test, or another suitable test setup, with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Confirm stable video and audio in the preview, verify the incoming resolution and frame rate, and monitor stream health and messages during the event. Check available upload capacity with a speed test; the connection needs headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variation. YouTube’s guidance is in its encoder settings help page.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no feed Incorrect ingest URL or key, a stopped encoder, or a mismatch between the selected broadcast and stream. Recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio, keep the key private, confirm FFmpeg is still running, and verify that you selected the intended broadcast and stream resources.
Stream health reports an unstable connection The upload connection or encoder cannot sustain the configured bitrate consistently. Check upload speed and available headroom, inspect FFmpeg output and YouTube health messages, and lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the recommended setting. Retest before relying on the stream.
Video is not 720p or motion looks wrong The input resolution or frame rate differs from the chosen output settings; the example does not scale the picture. Inspect the source and incoming preview. Decide whether to preserve its frame rate or set a different one, and add scaling only after checking aspect ratio and cropping.
No audio reaches YouTube The input has no audio stream, or the command assumes one that is absent. Inspect the input streams and explicitly map or generate audio as needed; verify audio in the test preview.
Playback repeats one video instead of moving through the playlist -stream_loop -1 loops the single input file in this example, not an arbitrary set of distinct files. Use an input arrangement appropriate to the files, such as a compatible concat list, then test file transitions, audio continuity, and the loop back to the start.
Feed arrives, but viewers do not see the expected event state The broadcast event and encoder stream are separate YouTube resources. Check the broadcast’s scheduled/live state in YouTube Studio as well as encoder output and stream health.
