You can’t rely on a Streamlabs Talk Studio broadcast to keep running after your computer enters sleep. Talk Studio runs in a browser, so keep the computer awake, powered and connected for the duration of the broadcast. You can turn off the display without putting the computer to sleep; change the sleep setting for the power source you’ll use and test the setup before an important stream.
Keep the computer awake during the broadcast
Talk Studio is browser-based and does not require a desktop installation. Its live session depends on the computer and browser remaining available. The available product guidance does not say that Talk Studio continues sending a broadcast once the computer sleeps, so set the computer not to sleep while you are live.
Turning off the display is different from putting the computer to sleep. If you want a dark screen, adjust the display timeout while keeping system sleep disabled for the broadcast. Keep the computer connected to power where possible, and check the settings for the power state you will actually use.
Windows 11: change the sleep timeout
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Find the setting for when the device sleeps and choose a timeout that will not expire during the broadcast. If available, set it to never sleep while streaming.
- Check both the plugged-in and battery settings. Windows can use different timeouts depending on whether the laptop is connected to power.
- If you plan to close the laptop lid, check its lid behavior first. Many laptops sleep when the lid closes; keeping it open avoids that trigger unless you have confirmed a different configuration.
Windows labels and available choices can vary by device. Before relying on the setup, start a test broadcast and confirm that the computer stays awake for the period you need.

Mac: allow the display to turn off without sleeping
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen and review the “Turn display off” choices for the power state you will use.
- On a Mac connected to a power adapter, check System Settings > Battery for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Enable it if you want the display to turn off while the Mac stays awake.
- Test the intended setup before broadcasting unattended. Do not assume that a display-off setting alone prevents system sleep.
Keep the connection suitable for your stream
Streamlabs recommends Ethernet where practical and specifies at least 5 Mbps upload. Its Talk Studio guide gives these resolution-specific figures:

These are Streamlabs’ published requirements and recommendations, not independently measured results. A fast connection alone does not prevent a computer from sleeping; configure both network and power settings.

End the broadcast deliberately
When you are ready to stop, use Talk Studio’s End Stream button. Streamlabs’ Talk Studio Getting Started guide says that if you do not press End Stream, the stream will not go offline. That instruction explains how to end a broadcast; it is not a promise that the broadcast will survive computer sleep.
If the stream stops or you need it to run unattended
- The computer sleeps mid-stream: Revisit the sleep timeout for the power state in use and check whether the laptop lid is triggering sleep. Test again with the display off if that is your goal.
- The display turns off: Display-off and system-sleep controls are separate. Adjust the sleep setting rather than keeping the screen lit unnecessarily.
- The stream connection is unstable: Use Ethernet if practical and compare your upload capacity with Streamlabs’ published figures for your chosen resolution.
- You need a broadcast to continue independently of this computer: The Talk Studio guidance does not establish that it can do that. YouTube documents encoder workflows, including computer software and standalone hardware encoders, but those are different setups, not evidence that a Talk Studio broadcast persists through sleep.
