For a single 1080p30 H.264 YouTube live stream, set the encoder to 14 Mbps and aim for roughly 17.5 Mbps of stable measured upload capacity at the streaming device. That capacity figure applies YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom; it is not an Airtel speed guarantee. For 1080p60 H.264, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps, which calls for about 21.25 Mbps of measured upload with the same margin. A 24/7 stream also needs a data-usage check: Airtel’s published Xstream Fiber terms state a 3333 GB billing-cycle fair-use threshold, after which speed is reduced to 1 Mbps, if those terms apply to your account.
Choose the bitrate for your resolution, frame rate and codec
Bitrate is not a universal setting: the appropriate rate depends on the format YouTube receives. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 live-encoder recommendations, not guarantees that your connection can sustain them.
| Ingest format | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These rates are for H.264. YouTube’s recommendations for AV1 and H.265 differ, so confirm the codec selected in your encoder before applying an H.264 value. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Calculate the upload capacity to target
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. Applying that margin means dividing the total stream bitrate by 0.8. For a single stream, that gives these approximate measured upload targets:

| H.264 stream | Recommended bitrate | Measured upload target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 480p30 or 360p30 | 4 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
The upload target is a calculation from YouTube’s recommended bitrate and headroom, not a separate ISP specification. Allow for audio and any backup stream in your total network load; YouTube says to account for primary and backup streams as well as the margin. Other people using the same network can reduce the upload available to your encoder. YouTube’s guidance is to test outbound bandwidth rather than infer it from download speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Check Airtel Xstream Fiber against a 24/7 stream
Advertised plan speed is not sustained upload evidence
Airtel India’s public broadband page lists advertised tiers of up to 40 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps and 1024 Mbps, with offers varying by location. Those advertised figures do not establish the stable upload throughput available to a particular home or device. Check the plan available at your address, then measure actual outbound capacity where the encoder will run. See Airtel’s broadband plans.

Test at the encoder and under realistic conditions
- Connect the streaming computer or device where it will normally operate. If you expect household use during the broadcast, test with representative network activity rather than an otherwise idle connection.
- Measure upload speed, not just download speed. A speed test is only a snapshot, so repeat it at different times and watch for variation.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test.
- If upload varies, the stream health deteriorates or other household use consumes the margin, lower the resolution or bitrate and rehearse again. Do not treat a brief high speed-test result as proof of 24-hour stability.
YouTube advises using a reliable network because connectivity disruptions can break a live stream. Neither an Airtel tier label nor a single speed test establishes that a line will remain stable for a full day.
Include the fair-use policy in the data budget
Airtel’s Xstream Fiber terms state that after consumption of 3333 GB in a billing cycle, speed is reduced to 1 Mbps, and that Airtel may amend the fair-use policy. Check the current terms attached to your account before relying on a public summary; Airtel’s advertised use of “unlimited” should not be read as unlimited full-speed throughput. See Airtel’s Xstream Fiber terms and conditions.

A constant 14 Mbps stream sends approximately 151.2 GB per day, or 4.54 TB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and any other usage. This is a bitrate calculation, not a published ISP measurement. If the 3333 GB threshold applies to your account and the stream remains at that rate, the stream alone would exceed it during a 30-day billing period.
Set the encoder for YouTube ingestion
- Rate control: use CBR.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS.
- Bitrate: choose the H.264 recommendation for the resolution and frame rate, then verify the total upload load fits the measured capacity with headroom.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the encoder bitrate is the incoming stream setting, not a promise that every viewer receives that exact bitrate. Confirm the current settings in YouTube’s encoder recommendations.

Troubleshoot instability or an unexpected drop in quality
- Stream health warns of insufficient bandwidth: compare actual outbound capacity with the target including headroom. Reduce bitrate or resolution until the test is consistently healthy.
- Speed test looks strong, but the live stream stutters: the test may not reflect upload variation or household sharing. Test again under representative load and monitor YouTube’s stream health during a rehearsal.
- Stream degrades after extended running: check the account’s current fair-use terms and usage in the billing cycle. A plan described as unlimited may still have a full-speed threshold.
- Configured bitrate is correct, but YouTube flags the stream: verify the codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval and ingestion protocol against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
