YouTube’s auto-start setting does not restart OBS, FFmpeg, or the server-side encoder; it only controls YouTube’s response once the encoder reconnects.
How reboot recovery works
Recovery has two separate parts. The server must restart the software sending the replay, and YouTube must accept that software’s feed and make the broadcast live. A reboot ends the running encoder process, so YouTube settings alone cannot bring it back.
- Host recovery: Use the server operating system’s startup mechanism or a process supervisor to launch the encoder after boot. The process needs access to the replay media, its configuration, the stream key, and a working network connection.
- YouTube broadcast behavior: Configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. If the broadcast should go live as soon as data arrives, enable auto-start for the relevant stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
YouTube describes the effect of auto-start and auto-stop this way: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” That setting does not schedule a server task or launch an encoder.
Set up the replay and YouTube stream
1. Confirm the replay works before automating it
Run the gaming replay manually with the intended encoder and account. Confirm the correct media file plays, the encoder connects, and the intended YouTube broadcast appears live. Resolve any file-path, audio, or stream configuration problems before adding boot automation.

2. Find the stream URL and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream configuration for the broadcast and enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses these details to connect the encoder to YouTube’s ingest service. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs.
3. Choose whether YouTube should auto-start
Enable YouTube’s auto-start option for the stream if the broadcast should begin when encoder data arrives. Without it, the encoder may connect and show a preview while the broadcast still requires a manual “Go live” action, depending on the stream workflow and settings.

If you use “Reuse settings” for a scheduled stream, check the copied auto-start and auto-stop selections. YouTube says these settings are copied when settings are reused, so do not assume a reused stream has the behavior you intended.
Configure the server to relaunch the encoder
Choose a startup mechanism for your operating system
Configure an operating-system startup entry, scheduled task, service, or process supervisor to launch the encoder after boot. The exact UI and service syntax depend on the server OS, encoder, and version; there is no single verified recipe that applies to every OBS or FFmpeg setup.

For OBS, a community forum discussion describes using the --startstreaming launch option with Windows Startup or Task Scheduler. Treat that as community guidance rather than an official, guaranteed recovery procedure. OBS’s launch-parameters reference documents launch arguments, but an argument by itself does not ensure that the server has network access, the right media path, or a live YouTube broadcast.
Check the boot-time execution context
A process started during boot may run as a different user or before the desktop session is ready. Verify that this specific account and context can access:

- The replay file and any required playlists or configuration files.
- The encoder installation and its saved settings or credentials.
- The network connection and DNS needed to reach YouTube.
- Any paths that differ from those used when you start the encoder interactively.
Startup order matters. If the encoder launches before a router, network interface, or DNS service is ready, it may fail to connect. Configure suitable delay, network readiness, or retry behavior for your operating system and process manager instead of assuming the first connection attempt will succeed. A community OBS discussion raises this timing issue, but does not establish a universal fix.

- Schedule a maintenance window and reboot the server deliberately.
- Check the startup task, service, or supervisor status and its logs to see whether the encoder launched successfully.
- Confirm the encoder can read the replay and is sending data to YouTube.
- Check the viewer-facing YouTube stream in Live Control Room or from the intended viewing account. A running process alone does not prove that the broadcast is live.
- If reliability matters, also test recovery after an encoder interruption and a network interruption, then confirm the broadcast behavior each time.
For a scheduled-stream workflow, YouTube’s guide describes connecting the encoder and clicking “Go live” after the preview appears. Auto-start settings can change that manual step, so verify the behavior with the exact stream configuration you plan to use.

What reboot recovery does not guarantee
Restarting the encoder can restore a feed after a reboot, but it does not guarantee one indefinitely uninterrupted broadcast or archive. YouTube states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not assume that reboot recovery alone makes a longer replay stream one uninterrupted, indefinitely archived video.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
