How Much Does a 24/7 YouTube Stream Cost on Google Cloud Compute Engine?

Compute Engine has no universal monthly price for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Estimate the VM, region, runtime, disks, and other resources separately—and account for Google’s listed no-charge VM-to-YouTube transfer category.

There is no single monthly price for running a 24/7 YouTube stream on Google Cloud Compute Engine. Your total depends on the VM type and region, disk capacity, actual billing hours, and the encoder workload. Google Cloud lists VM, storage, and networking as separate cost considerations; its VM-instance prices do not include disks or networking. One important exception is that qualifying VM-to-YouTube transfer is listed as no charge.

What goes into the monthly bill?

Estimate the resources your design actually uses rather than treating a VM’s hourly rate as the whole bill. Google Cloud describes Compute Engine costs in terms of virtual machines, networking, and storage, and directs users to its pricing calculator. Its VM pricing information excludes disks and networking from listed VM-instance prices. See Google’s Compute Engine pricing and pricing details when building an estimate.

Cost component How to account for it
VM runtime Choose a machine family, size, and region for the encoder workload, then multiply the applicable hourly VM charge by the planned run hours. VM pricing varies by machine type and region.
Monthly hours For planning, 30 days of continuous operation is 720 hours; 31 days is 744 hours. Use the actual billing period rather than assuming every month has the same duration.
Persistent disks Include the boot disk and any separate disk holding media, logs, or archive files. Disk costs are separate from the VM-instance price.
Stream feed to YouTube Google’s network pricing documentation lists VM traffic to YouTube among transfers to specified Google products with no charge. Do not substitute ordinary internet-egress pricing for this qualifying stream feed; different destinations or traffic categories may have different charges.
Other resources Add items such as snapshots, logging, IP addresses, extra disks, or a backup VM only if your design uses them and after checking their billing treatment.

Google Cloud lists a free tier and discounts, but eligibility and suitability depend on account, machine, region, and terms. Do not subtract a discount from an estimate unless you have confirmed that it applies to your configuration. A free-tier e2-micro should not be treated as a guaranteed fit for continuous encoding without testing the actual software and stream settings.

How to build a defensible estimate

  1. Specify the workload. Record the output resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder software, and whether hardware acceleration is involved. These affect the processing workload, but YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not by themselves establish which VM size can encode it.
  2. Select a VM and region. Use the Google Cloud pricing calculator for the machine family, size, and region you intend to run. Avoid presenting a VM choice as adequate until you have tested the chosen encoder and settings.
  3. Set the billing duration. Multiply the selected hourly charge by planned runtime hours for the month—for example, 720 hours for a 30-day planning month, or 744 for 31 days.
  4. Add disks and included services. Price the boot disk and any media or log storage, then include only other resources your design actually provisions.
  5. Check each network destination. Treat the qualifying VM-to-YouTube feed according to Google’s listed no-charge category. Check separate rates for other destinations or traffic types rather than assuming all outbound data is free.
  6. Review billing conditions. Confirm whether discounts or free-tier terms apply to your account and selected resources before using them to reduce the estimate.

A useful estimate should show the region, machine family and size, disk type and capacity, stream resolution, frame rate, codec, and billing hours alongside the total. The title alone supplies none of these configuration inputs, so an exact dollar total would be misleading. Google’s pricing calculator is the appropriate place to price the selected resources.

Size the encoder around YouTube’s ingest settings

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different playback formats, according to its live encoder settings. The VM needs to encode and upload the configured ingest stream; do not assume it must create every format viewers may watch.

YouTube Help’s 2026 recommendations below are ingest bitrate specifications, not measurements of VM CPU requirements. The recommended value is not a sizing benchmark for any particular encoder or machine.

Output setting Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

YouTube’s encoder guidance also specifies RTMP or RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and allows up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to its servers. Consult the current encoder settings for other resolutions and audio requirements.

Those settings describe the stream sent to YouTube, not the CPU capacity a cloud VM needs to produce it. The required VM depends on software, scene complexity, resolution, and hardware acceleration. Test the actual encoder and stream configuration; no specific VM size can be justified from bitrate guidance alone.

Plan for stream setup, eligibility, and archives

Connect the encoder

YouTube’s setup instructions require entering the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the stream key private and use the current values displayed in YouTube’s live setup. Follow YouTube’s stream setup guidance for the current interface and workflow.

Check channel eligibility

Google’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16 years old. These are YouTube channel requirements, not Compute Engine settings.

Do not assume a single 24-hour archive

YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one uninterrupted video. If a single accessible archive matters, check YouTube’s current handling of long streams and decide whether your design will restart or segment broadcasts, or accept separate or incomplete archives.

Reliability and total-cost trade-offs

A one-VM setup has fewer resources to estimate, but any additional reliability measure—such as a backup encoder—adds resources only if you actually provision it. Compare designs using the same region and billing assumptions, and include disks or backup resources on both sides where applicable. A quoted VM hourly price alone is not a fair comparison when one design includes storage or redundancy and another does not.

For a continuous channel, decide whether you need a backup VM, what should happen after an encoder or network failure, and whether broadcasts will be restarted to suit archive needs. Price those choices as part of the design; they are not automatic charges in every Compute Engine setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel built around uploaded video rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing your own Compute Engine encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; one free day per account.
