There is no single monthly price that settles whether cloud streaming is cheaper than leaving a desktop on. For an India-based YouTube channel, measure the desktop’s actual wall-power draw and use the electricity tariff for the premises; for cloud, add the selected server’s runtime, operating system, region and outbound data charges. First decide whether the channel is a live newsroom feed or a loop of prerecorded news segments: a managed video-looping service may suit the latter but should not be treated as a live-camera production system.
First decide what “always-on news channel” means
Live newsroom or camera feed
A live camera, studio or newsroom feed needs a workflow that accepts live input. YouTube says encoder streaming is intended for advanced productions; the channel must be verified and must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. A desktop encoder can send a live production to YouTube. A cloud VM can also act as an encoder or relay if it is configured and maintained for that job. A managed service built around uploaded videos is not automatically a substitute for live ingest.
Scheduled playlist of prerecorded segments
If the channel continuously plays uploaded news packages, explainers or other prerecorded segments, a looping service may be suitable. How to calculate the desktop’s electricity cost
Use the computer’s average power draw at the wall, not the wattage printed on its power supply. Include the components that remain on for the stream, such as the PC, monitor if needed, encoder peripherals and any network equipment you want counted.
- Measure the running setup with a plug-in electricity meter over representative operating conditions. Capture the complete setup rather than assuming the PC’s rated power supply is its consumption.
- Find the marginal electricity price on the premises’ bill, in rupees per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Use the relevant tariff and billing period, not a national average.
- Calculate: average watts ÷ 1,000 × runtime hours × rupees per kWh.
- For a 30-day month running continuously, use 720 hours. Add any costs you are including separately, such as a backup-power system, maintenance or internet-plan charges.
For example, the equation is measured watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 × your tariff. Your measured watts and tariff determine the answer. An India-focused 2026 illustration from iTechGuides uses assumed desktop draw of 120–200 W and assumed power cost of ₹7–₹8/kWh, producing about ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days. How to estimate a self-managed cloud VM
A cloud VM used to encode or relay a stream is not priced solely by the server’s headline hourly rate. Calculate the configuration you would actually operate:
- Compute: instance type, region, operating system and continuous runtime.
- Outbound transfer: data sent from the VM, with the provider’s applicable allowance and rates.
- Other services: storage, monitoring, backups or networking services that the setup uses.
- Operations: configuration, maintenance and recovery remain your responsibility unless included in a managed service.
A stream’s bitrate helps estimate transfer. At 10 Mbps, continuous output is roughly 108 GB per day before protocol overhead or other traffic (10 megabits/second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8). Multiply by actual operating days and check whether the cloud provider bills the relevant traffic as internet data transfer out. This is an estimate derived from the bitrate, not a quote for any specific VM.

AWS lists On-Demand compute and internet data transfer as separate billing dimensions. Its EC2 pricing page states that 100 GB/month of internet data transfer out is free, aggregated across AWS services and regions, subject to exclusions and offer terms. Confirm eligibility and current conditions rather than assuming it offsets the workload. AWS does not provide one exact monthly EC2 total for an unspecified instance, region, operating system and traffic pattern. See AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing.
Bitrate affects capacity and cloud traffic
Choose output settings for the actual production and destination, then use that bitrate in both the network and transfer calculations. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1/H.265, or 14 Mbps with H.264; its table also gives recommendations for other resolutions and frame rates. These are platform ingestion recommendations, not a universal setting for every news stream. YouTube transcodes live video into formats for viewers, so the channel does not need to operate its own viewer-distribution CDN simply to reach YouTube playback viewers. Allow network headroom: YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s total bitrate and warns that shared networks and connectivity interruptions can affect transmission. Test the encoder and check the signal in Live Control Room before relying on a continuous broadcast. A nominal broadband speed is not the same as reliable upload capacity. Do not compare a VM’s encoder-to-YouTube traffic with the cost of a managed architecture that also distributes video to viewers. AWS’s example for its Live Streaming solution is approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with roughly 1,000 viewers at SD-540p in US East (N. Virginia), including about $2.50 for encoding/packaging and $67.24 for distribution. It is an AWS viewer-delivery example, not an India EC2 encoder rental rate or a monthly always-on quote. How to make a fair monthly comparison
- Set the workflow: live camera/newsroom feed or prerecorded playlist, plus whether you need only YouTube output or a separate viewer-delivery system.
- Fix the output: resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Use the same target for each option.
- Measure the desktop: record average wall draw under representative streaming load, then apply the premises’ marginal tariff to the intended runtime.
- Price cloud compute and transfer separately: choose a region, instance and operating system; calculate continuous runtime and estimate outbound traffic from bitrate.
- Price managed plans against included work: verify live-input support, storage, recovery, support, tax, destinations and billing term.
- Include reliability and labor: account for local power/network resilience and maintenance on a desktop, or server administration on a self-managed VM.
The most useful result is your own side-by-side total with assumptions visible. A desktop you already own can have low incremental cost if its measured power draw and local reliability are acceptable. A cloud VM avoids dependence on the home PC but adds recurring compute and transfer charges. A managed loop can reduce operational work for prerecorded content, but only if its workflow and included features match the channel.
