VLC can loop gameplay recordings, but its documented playlist-streaming examples do not establish a verified direct connection from VLC to YouTube Live. The reliable distinction is: use VLC for playback and repeat behavior, and use YouTube’s documented encoder workflow for YouTube ingest. You’ll need an encoder that can send a compatible feed to YouTube; do not assume VLC’s local HTTP streaming example is a YouTube-ready RTMPS setup.
What VLC can—and cannot—do here
VLC can play a recording or playlist repeatedly. Its version 3.0 documentation describes a VLM broadcast playlist with a loop option that restarts the list after the last input, and its stream-output documentation explains how VLC processes files and sends output. The published playlist-streaming example uses local HTTP output, however; that is not evidence that VLC can directly publish a compatible stream to YouTube.
YouTube’s documented workflow uses an encoder configured with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. No current, independently verified VLC-to-YouTube procedure is established here, so treat direct VLC publishing as unverified rather than following an untested command or assuming a particular VLC build supports YouTube ingest.
Prepare YouTube Live
Check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips before setting up the broadcast, since eligibility and interface details can change.

Create the stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Start a stream or schedule an event.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address for a stream; keep the key private.
- In the encoder you will use for YouTube ingest, enter the URL in its server field and the key in its stream-key field. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
See YouTube’s stream key guidance for current controls and labels.
Set VLC to repeat the gameplay recording
Repeat one recording
Open the gameplay video in VLC and select the repeat-current control if you want that one file to restart continuously. VLC’s control names and icon appearance can differ by desktop version and operating system; confirm that repeat-current, rather than repeat-all, is selected.

Repeat a sequence of recordings
- Add the gameplay files to VLC’s playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Select repeat-all or playlist repeat so playback returns to the first item when it reaches the end of the list.
- Play the list and check the transition from the final recording back to the first. For a broadcast playlist, VLC’s VLM documentation describes multiple inputs and a
loopoption that restarts the list after the last input.
VLM is a VLC playlist/broadcast configuration approach, not a YouTube setup by itself. VLC’s documented local HTTP output does not establish YouTube RTMPS compatibility.
Connect a compatible encoder and test before going live
Use an encoder with YouTube’s documented ingest workflow: place the YouTube stream URL in its server field and the stream key in its key field. VLC can handle playback and repeat behavior, but a separate, compatible encoder connection is needed unless you have independently verified a direct VLC method for your specific VLC build, operating system, destination protocol, and output settings.

- Choose encoder settings that match your recording, desired resolution and frame rate, and the sustained upload capacity of the connection.
- YouTube currently recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for current recommendations by resolution and codec.
- For H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as recommended. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain the bitrate. Test against available upload capacity.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the gameplay image, audio, and playlist behavior are correct before selecting Go live for a scheduled event.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video quality while live. Test first with gameplay that has comparable motion and audio to what you intend to broadcast; a static or quiet test clip may not reveal issues that appear during fast gameplay.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If an archive matters, account for that duration and confirm the resulting video in Studio rather than assuming a longer continuous stream will be preserved as one archive. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Copyright and gameplay footage
Only stream gameplay and audio you have the rights or permission to use. A game’s music, licensed soundtrack, overlays, or other included material can raise copyright issues even when the gameplay recording is yours. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and enforcement can affect whether a broadcast continues; check the platform’s current guidance and the relevant game publisher’s streaming policy before looping recordings for long periods.

Looping a recording does not make it original or automatically eligible for monetization. Reused-content monetization decisions are separate from whether a stream can be technically transmitted, so review YouTube’s channel monetization policies if monetization is a goal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting the loop-to-live workflow
- The recording repeats locally but does not appear in YouTube. VLC repeat controls only govern playback. Confirm that a compatible encoder is connected to YouTube with the correct stream URL and key; VLC’s documented local HTTP example is not proof of YouTube ingest compatibility.
- YouTube does not receive a feed. Verify the server URL and stream key in the encoder, make sure the stream is started, and check the Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- The stream preview is unstable or drops frames. Lower the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to fit the sustained upload capacity; check encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations and test with representative gameplay motion.
- The image or audio is wrong at a playlist transition. Test the entire repeat sequence before going live. Check each source file and the encoder’s behavior between items; VLC’s
sout-keepdocumentation describes keeping output open across consecutive playlist items, but does not establish YouTube compatibility for a particular setup. - The stream key no longer works. Recheck the key associated with the active stream in YouTube Studio. If you regenerated it, replace the old value in the encoder.
- You are not allowed to start a live stream. Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies within YouTube’s 90-day eligibility window.
