It depends on your laptop’s measured power use, your electricity tariff and internet plan, and the VPS’s real transfer and performance limits. An already-owned laptop can cost less in cash if it draws little power and your connection is reliable. A VPS moves the computing and electricity off-site, but adds server rental and still requires setup, monitoring, and recovery work. Compare actual monthly costs—not a VPS headline price against a generic electricity estimate.
This comparison is for continuously streaming prerecorded video to YouTube. A live camera or demanding real-time scene may change the hardware and bandwidth requirements.
What actually determines the cheaper option?
Compare each option on four things: recurring cash cost, ability to sustain your chosen stream settings, continuity if a connection or process fails, and the time you will spend setting it up and keeping it running. There is no single monthly price that applies to every Indian student: electricity tariffs, measured computer draw, broadband terms, bitrate, VPS allowances, taxes, and billing terms vary.
- Laptop or PC: incremental electricity, any extra internet or power-backup costs, plus your setup and recovery time.
- VPS: server rental and taxes, outbound transfer or overage, storage or upgrades, plus setup, security, monitoring, and restart work.
- Managed cloud: subscription and applicable tax, storage/channel/quality limits, and the provider’s support and recovery terms; less dependence on a computer and connection at home.
A solution can look cheaper only because it excludes labor, required upgrades, or the cost of interruptions. State those assumptions when you compare.

Calculate your laptop or PC’s monthly electricity cost
Measure the whole computer under the intended workload
Use a suitable plug-in power meter or other meter to measure wall draw while the computer is encoding the video you plan to stream. Do not treat the laptop adapter’s rating—or a generic desktop estimate—as your computer’s actual streaming consumption. For a 30-day month, continuous operation is 720 hours.
- Measure average wall draw in watts while the encoder is running the intended stream.
- Calculate monthly energy:
watts × 720 hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh. - Multiply the kWh by the marginal rate on your electricity bill.
- Add any incremental broadband/data, power-backup, or replacement-hardware cost that streaming causes.
If you already own the computer and already pay for broadband, distinguish incremental streaming cost from the full purchase price or whole internet bill. A 2026 illustrative calculation used an assumed 120–200 W desktop and ₹7–₹8 per kWh, producing about ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days; it is neither a laptop measurement nor an India-wide tariff. Estimate the upload data your stream needs
For continuous streaming, sustained bitrate—not resolution by itself—is the main driver of outgoing data. Using decimal units and 30 days (2,592,000 seconds), the calculation is bitrate in bits/second × 2,592,000 ÷ 8.

These are planning calculations before protocol overhead. Check the provider’s units and use the actual configured sustained bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 ingestion at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; those are recommended settings, not a requirement that every 24/7 stream use 1080p. Choose a quality your connection can deliver reliably, test with similar audio and video motion, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance explains its recommendations.

What to include in a VPS comparison
Do not treat an advertised starting price as an all-in price or evidence that a server can encode and deliver your stream. Check the provider’s current terms and the plan you would actually need.
- Monthly rental, taxes, billing term, renewal price, and any required upgrade.
- Included outbound transfer, overage charges, or throttling rules; “unmetered” or “zero egress” wording alone does not establish throughput or uptime.
- CPU capacity for your selected encoder workload, RAM, storage, and server location.
- Setup, security, monitoring, and what you must do if the encoder or stream stops.
As dated examples, an iTechGuides page reported an Inservers advertised starting price of ₹880/month and a CloudPe listing of ₹930/month for 4 GB RAM and 30 GB NVMe, checked on 2026-10-03. These are provider-specific entry listings, not verified all-in bills or proof of stream capacity. Confirm current plans and terms directly. Set up YouTube streaming with an encoder
YouTube supports encoder streaming. In your encoder, enter YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key; keep the key private. Follow YouTube’s current setup flow and encoder-specific instructions, since exact controls vary by software. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the process.
Settings and stream lifecycle to check
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Use settings appropriate to your encoder and chosen resolution/frame rate.
- Test with similar motion and audio to the planned broadcast, and monitor stream health rather than assuming a successful start guarantees uninterrupted delivery. See YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its setup guidance does not establish that an arbitrarily long single broadcast will be archived as one video. For perpetual programming, plan the stream lifecycle—such as scheduled segments or restarts—in a way that fits your content and platform setup.
- Use content you have the rights to stream. A continuous broadcast does not exempt prerecorded video from copyright rules; check the rights to video, music, and other included material before going live.

Choose the laptop when measured incremental costs are low and your home connection and power are dependable. Consider a VPS if its full plan supports your encoder and transfer needs and you are comfortable maintaining it. A managed service may make sense when avoiding an always-on home computer and local-upload dependency is worth the fee. The available evidence does not establish that VPS location improves or harms YouTube reach.
