If both look right but YouTube is black, check the Live Control Room and the stream’s outbound path. Changing bitrate is not a universal fix for a missing picture.
1. Check whether the problem is in OBS or on YouTube
Look at the active scene in OBS Studio while the podcast setup is running. Confirm that the expected source is present, enabled, and visible in the scene. If you are unsure whether OBS is capturing it, make a short local recording and play it back.
- OBS preview and local recording are black: Start with the source, its visibility, the selected target, and any permissions needed to capture it.
- OBS preview and local recording look right, but YouTube is black: Check the Live Control Room, encoder output, and outbound internet connection.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the stream in the encoder, reviewing dashboard errors, inspecting the local archive, and testing outbound internet when diagnosing an encoder problem. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream
2. Fix an OBS preview that is black
Confirm the scene and source
- In OBS, select the scene you intend to use for the podcast.
- In the Sources list, check that the camera, display, window, application, or other intended video source is present and enabled. A hidden source or a different active scene can leave the preview blank.
- Open the source’s properties and confirm it is targeting the device, monitor, window, or application you actually want. If needed, record a short local test to check whether the image is captured.
Choose the capture source that matches what you want to show
For a whole monitor, OBS documents Display Capture. For a particular window or application, use an appropriate window or application capture source rather than assuming a monitor capture will show the desired content. On macOS, check Screen Recording permission
OBS’s macOS permissions guide says screen, window, and app capture require Screen Recording permission. In OBS Studio, open the OBS Studio menu and choose Review App Permissions, then enable Screen Recording. The guide also lists Camera permission for webcams and capture cards, and Microphone permission for audio. Exact permission prompts and recovery behavior can vary by macOS version; if the source stays blank after enabling access, recheck its target and follow the operating system’s prompts before testing again. On macOS 13 and later, OBS marks legacy Display Capture as deprecated and points users to macOS Screen Capture. OBS’s dedicated source can capture a display, a single window, or visible windows for an application. OBS: macOS Screen Capture Source

3. If Game Capture is black
These checks apply to a game source, not automatically to a podcast camera or desktop capture.
- Some games require OBS to run as administrator.
- Overlays, FPS counters, and other software can conflict with Game Capture.
- For some games, OBS recommends using windowed or borderless mode and trying Window Capture instead.
- On a laptop or all-in-one computer with multiple GPUs, make sure the game and OBS use the high-performance GPU.
Which workaround is appropriate depends on the game. Use the relevant game-specific guidance rather than applying every option at once. OBS: Game Capture Troubleshooting

4. If OBS looks right but the YouTube stream is black
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream preview and any messages or errors.
- Check that the encoder is current, is sending the expected output, and that its local recording or archive still shows the picture.
- If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube playback does not, test the outbound internet connection and review YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.
YouTube treats encoder or source issues and outbound connection issues as separate troubleshooting branches. A bitrate adjustment alone is not established as a general cure for black video. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream
5. Separate a missing picture from performance overload
A static black source and choppy or overloaded output are different symptoms. OBS uses GPU resources to compose and render scenes. If the whole output is struggling, simplify demanding sources, free up resources, or consider reducing output resolution or frame rate. Those steps can help with performance load; they should not be the default response to a single blank camera or display source. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

6. Verify the fix before the podcast starts
- Run a private or unlisted test stream.
- Check the image in the OBS preview and then in YouTube’s Live Control Room before starting the public show.
- Monitor both audio and video quality during the test. Confirm the picture on the YouTube watch page, not only inside OBS.
YouTube recommends testing a live stream and checking its preview and quality before going live. Its computer-streaming tips also note: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That is a reason to test and diagnose your existing setup before buying gear—not a guarantee that every device will work.
