Abandoned was announced as a PS5 horror game, but years of delays, a reworked concept, a postponed showcase and viral theories left its future unclear. The studio said in 2022 that it was still working on the project; a 2026 report later described a PlayStation Store listing with a 2027 window, but did not include a fresh confirmation from the studio. The record explains the mystery without proving either that the game was a hoax or that it is now on track to launch.
What was Abandoned?
Abandoned was a cinematic survival horror project announced for PlayStation 5 by Blue Box Game Studios. Game director Hasan Kahraman introduced it in a PlayStation Blog post dated April 7, 2021, titled “Abandoned, a cinematic survival sim, hits PS5 later this year.” The PlayStation Blog author page establishes the post’s date and Kahraman’s role.
The announcement created expectations of a distinctive, atmospheric PS5 experience. Blue Box said it planned to demonstrate the game’s visuals, audio and DualSense haptic feedback through a PS5 app called the Realtime Experience. But the promotional route to showing the game became part of the story: the app was delayed, the initial teaser was reworked, and the planned Prologue did not arrive on the schedule the studio had outlined.
How did development become a public mystery?
A project already in flux
In its own development blog, Blue Box said work on Abandoned had begun in 2017 and its concept had changed several times. The studio also described smaller side projects as a burden on production. After the April 2021 announcement teaser failed to match the team’s vision, it said, the team reworked the game. These are the studio’s retrospective descriptions, not independently audited production records. Blue Box Game Studios’ development blog is the primary account of those changes.

The app that was meant to show the game
Blue Box presented the Realtime Experience app as a way to demonstrate technology behind Abandoned, including its graphics, sound and controller feedback. In the development blog, the studio said the app had been announced too early and attributed two delays to stress, missed deadlines and a chaotic production. It also reported that, according to Sony data, 3 million PS5 users had engaged with the app across 11 million sessions. Those are figures Blue Box attributed to Sony in its 2021/22 blog; they are not current user or session totals.
The app was intended as a bridge between a cinematic announcement and playable proof. Instead, its delayed rollout and limited footage left fans waiting for the promised reveal while giving online speculation more room to grow.

The showcase and Prologue slipped
Blue Box’s blog anticipated a tech demo in the app and described the reveal and Prologue as approaching, calling Q1 2022 an important period for fans. When those plans did not come to fruition, questions about cancellation intensified. The sequence is important: the studio publicly described plans and missed them, but a missed schedule alone does not establish why a game was not released or whether it was ultimately abandoned.
What did Blue Box say about cancellation?
In a statement reported by Game Informer on April 4, 2022, Blue Box rejected cancellation rumors, acknowledged it had underestimated its roadmap, and said the reveal and Prologue were delayed. The studio wrote: “We will release Abandoned: Prologue when it’s stable, good, and ready.” Game Informer reproduced the statement; Push Square also reported the response and the surrounding speculation.

That statement is evidence of what the studio said in April 2022, not confirmation that the Prologue was completed or that development remained active afterward. It is also not a current status update.
Why did people connect Abandoned to Hideo Kojima and Silent Hill?
The gap between a high-profile horror announcement and a playable demonstration helped fuel theories that Abandoned was secretly connected to Hideo Kojima or Silent Hill. The theories spread online as fans interpreted the project’s sparse material and the unusual app-based reveal as clues. Contemporary coverage says Blue Box denied a Kojima connection; the available reporting does not establish any involvement by Kojima or a hidden Silent Hill project. Push Square’s 2022 report covers the denial and the speculation.

That episode explains why the game became more famous as a mystery than as a playable release. It does not turn the theory into evidence. Nor does the record justify calling the project a deliberate scam: the documented facts are an announcement, studio-described production problems and delays, a delayed Prologue, and unresolved later status.

GamesRadar reported on September 28, 2026 that Abandoned had returned to the PlayStation Store with a 2027 release window. The report noted the listing’s sparse description and did not provide a new statement from Blue Box confirming the date. GamesRadar’s report establishes that the store return and window were reported; it does not establish a guaranteed release plan.
